All-Ireland title for Bornacoola
A second All Ireland title for Bornacoola last Saturday last was a memorable occasion for Leitrim Scór as Aiden Dockery, Liam Rabitte and Seoirse Reynolds were declared All Ireland champions in Question time in Killarney. A nail biting experience for the team as it came down to a tie- breaker with Cornafean of Cavan. The Bors clinching the win in the second round of questions to a rapturous applause from the Leitrim contingent. it is a 3rd All-ireland title for Aidan who had previous win in Recitation and a win with the question time team in 2010, a second for Liam with the knowledgeable team and a first for Seoirse.
The sight of the bonfire blazing and the crowds assembled to celebrate on the approach to the Bornacoola pitch last Sunday at 6.30pm was a very warm welcome to the team and to the Mohill and St marys teams who travelled to join in the celebrations for their huge win. At the victory celebration Leitrim heroes were met by Shane Reynolds secretary of the Bornacoola club, Noel Mc Closkey Chairman of the club who travelled to Killarney to support the team and to whom the team thanked for all the support given to them by the club, Cathaoirleach of Leitrim Co Board, Seosamh Ó Floinn and Rúnaí, Diarmuid Mac Suibhne as well as Oifigeach Cultúir agus Teanga, Máire Ní Mhaoilbhlia, Rúnaí Coiste Scór Liatroma, Seán Ó Suilleabháin, agus PRO Scór Liatroma Claire Crossan. Tributes were also paid to Leitrims other All Ireland competitors: St Marys figure dance team and Mohill in Novelty act.
The other 3 acts through from Leitrim were not as fortunate. St Marys from Carrick in the figure dance, looked superb on the stage and danced their hearts out but the 8 ladies from Spa, Co Kerry danced their way to victory once again.
Recitation was a very close call, Aiden Dockerys deliverance of his piece “The man from God knows where” was exquisite and has to be said put all his heart and soul into this rendition on the day but Peter Dolan of Moate All-Whites of Westmeath took the title with his comedy piece.
Instrumental music was won by Bellaghy from Derry, the 4 piece brought a very quirky and uplifting trad music to the stage, with exceptional bodhran skills, they certainly won the audience vote.
Ballad Group was won yet again by Clara from Offaly winning their 5th title with “Gentle Annie” & “Uncle Nobbys steamboat”.
Novelty Act was also a tight one with very different aspects of comedy coming through the four provinces, Mohill performed to their usual witty and well delivered high standard won the audience vote with their sketch “Jack Johnny Jack” but Errigal Ciaran of Tyrone lifted the title.
Solo singing was won by Niamh Farrell of St Marys Sligo, a fabulous young who lady Leitrim supporters had cheered on and claimed as their own as she has strong Leitrim connections, daughter of Peter (Kilclare) & Margo Farrell. A well deserved win.
Set dance was claimed by Glenflesk of Kerry
Overall it was a fantastic weekend with the Leitrim contingent occupying their favourite “Leitrim room” organised by our no 1 supporter Ailbhe McGill in the Gleneagle on the Saturday night and the music and song went on to the small hours of the morning, which helped greatly to celebrate the bors fantastic win.
The success this year brings Leitrims total All Irelands in Scór Sinsear to 24, on a tie with Galway. Tyrone is now topping the roll of honour with 25.
