The late Michael Martin Aghadark Ballinamore RIP
The late Michael Martin, Ballinamore. RIP
Coiste Chontae Liatroma CLG and Leitrim GAA followers join in mourning the death of former Ballinamore and Leitrim football star and noted Gael, Michael Martin, Aghadark, Ballinamore.
We extend sincere sympathy to his wife Annette, daughters Susan, Louise, Caroline and Aideen, sisters Carrie, Joan and Evelyn, sons-in –law, brothers –in –law, sisters-in-law, his beloved grandchildren, uncle, nephews, nieces and other relatives on their very sad loss.
Michael won six Leitrim Senior Championship medals with Ballinamore in 1967, ‘68, ‘ 69, ‘72, ’73 and 1975 and was team captain in the 1973 final. As well, he also won a number of County League titles, together with numerous club tournaments. When the Ballinamore three-in –row team made an historic visit to play New York in gaelic Park in 1969, Michael was one of the main organisers and one of the star players on that trip.
During the 1960’s, Michael was a regular on the Leitrim senior team, his usual position being left half back, the same as had been held by his famous footballing uncle, Mike Dillon of Cloone, Leitrim and New York. When Leitrim reached the 1967 Connacht Final against Mayo, Michael was selected to partner Terry Blessing of Aughavas at midfield. Whether lining out with his club or county, Michael Martin could always be depended on to give of his all and had great pride in his jersey.
Michael will repose at his home on Tuesday June 9th from 11am to 4pm, with removal to St. Patrick’s Church, Ballinamore, arriving at 7pm. His funeral mass will be celebrated at 12 noon on Wednesday, with burial in Oughteragh Cemetery.
