Mohill GAA Notes
Down Memory Lane
This weeks trip down Memory Lane takes us back to the swinging ‘60s as we go back in time to 1966 and recall the fortunes of our Junior team which was our first team back then and indeed, our first and only adult team at the time. In the Junior League we were grouped with Gortletteragh, Annaduff, Aughavas and Carrick. Before the League commenced in March a challenge match was arranged at the end of February and the following players were requested to attend on the day... John Joe McLoughlin, Christie McCaffrey, Michael Gallagher, Brendan Gallagher, John P Boyle, Frank Reynolds, Sean Bannon, Johnny Rowley, Tom Mulvey, Michael Keane, Paul Greenan, Brendan McGowan, Peter Gordon, Sylvester Kivlehan, Vincie Crossan, Sean Kilrane, Pat Lynch, George Booth, Sean (Bula) McCrann, John Martin, Padraig Guckian, Liam Guckian, Eddie Costello, Michael Gannon. Our boys were drawn to play Gortletteragh in the first round of the League with the match fixed for the Park on Sunday March 13th. The following panel were asked to attend on the day... John Joe McLoughlin, Padraig Duignan, Christie McCaffrey, Johnny Rowley, Michael Gallagher, Frank Reynolds, John P. Boyle, Shane Moran, Michael McGuinness, Michael Keane, Brendan McGowan, Tom Mulvey, Paul Greenan, Peter Gordon, Chris Meehan (without his redneck friends), Sylvester Kivlehan, Pat Lynch, Padraig Guckian, Liam Guckian, Vincie Crossan, Sean Kilrane, Des Keegan, Ciaran McIntyre, Eddie Costello, Ml Gannon, George Booth, Sean Bannon, Frankie Keegan, Don Reynolds, Sean Melia frank Doris. In the match itself, we defeated our neighbours second team by 2-12 to 1-2. Our best players on the day were Sean ( Bula) McCrann, Sean Kilrane, Michael Gallagher, Brendan Gallagher, Vincie Crossan, Michael Keane, Sean Bannon. In the second round we received a walkover from Annaduff, while Unfortunately, we don’t know exactly how we got on during the remainder of the competition, but suffice to say, we were not in the final shakeup for honours. Highlight of the year was a shock victory over Senior team, Melvin Gaels in the Fr. Manning Cup competition. However, it seemed we did not progress any further in that particular competition. The team enjoyed a very good run in the Championship however, firstly getting to the South Leitrim Final where they defeated Fenagh by a point on a 1-7 to 1-6 scoreline with this result propelling us into the County Fnal Proper where they faced Drumkeerin. Unfortunately, we came out on the wrong end of a 2-8 to 2-3 scoreline following an entertaining encounter that was a curtain raiser for the Senior Decider, and indeed, by all accounts was a better game than the main one. Drumkeerin got off to a dream start with an early Charlie Flynn goal, while Captain Michael Keane opened Mohill's account when he replied with a point. Keeper Michael McTiernan then came to the winners rescue with two wonderful saves before Keane eventually beat him for our own first goal. However, we failed to build on that as Drumkeerin hit over 4 points without reply before Flynn pounced for his and his side’s second goal just before the interval to leave Drumkeerin leading by 2-4 to 1-1 at the halfway stage of the contest. On the resumption, the aformentioned McTiernan was called on again and again, (perhaps we should have taken our points) and his brilliance contributed enormously to his side’s success, as did 4 pointed Fees from Mc Ardle at the other end. Our boys fought to the bitter end with Anthony Canning scoring our second goal in the final quarter, but too little too late as Drumkeerin were crowned champions with McTiernan, Flynn, and McArdle proving to be match winners on the day. The panel on the day was as follows… Anthony Canning, Sean Bannon, Michael McGuinness, Des Keegan, Frankie Keegan, Sean (Bula) McCrann, Michael Keane Capt, Michael Gallagher, Brendan McGowan, Vincie Crossan, Liam Guckian, Sean Kilrane, Paul Greenan, Pat Lynch, Sean Melia, Sylvester Kivlehan Vice Capt. Shane Moran, Peter Gordon, Eddie Costello, John P. Boyle. Other players who played during the year were John Martin and Tony Leavy. The team of ‘66 was Captained by Michael Keane while Vice Captain was Sylvester Kivlehan. Officers of the Club at the time was. Chairman: Eamonn Duignan, Vice Chairman: Peter Gordon, Secretary: Michael Gallagher, Treasurer: Sean Bannon, while President of the Club was Canon McLoughlin, with Fr. Gilfinnan as Vice President. As a Footnote to the above we note that five of the players who lined out in that Junior Decider 58 years ago were still Minors, namely Sean (Bula) McCrann, Liam Guckian, Brendan McGowan, Frankie Keegan, Sean Melia, a promising sign for the future then, while several of the players listed above were all part of our famous 1971 Championship winning team five years later, namely Sean (Bula) McCrann (‘71 Captain,) Michael McGuinness, Des Keegan, Frankie Keegan, Brendan McGowan, Anthony Canning, Sean Kilrane. Sean Bannon, Shane Moran, Brendan Gallagher. Paul Greenan, (came on as a Sub.) while Liam Guckian, Sylvester Kivlehan, and George Booth were Subs. and Johnny Rowley was Selector.

Condoleces
Our condolences go to the family and friends of Phyllis Prendergast, Fr Eamonn Corkery and Joey Smith who sadly were laid to rest last week. Phyllis, whose funeral took place in her native Dublin on Thursday last was wife of well known Mohill native Paddy Prendergast who was the star underage player with Mohill in the 1950s. Fr. Eamonn was stationed here in Mohill some years back, and was laid to rest in his native Longford. Joey Smith was a great Ballinamore man who proudly wore the Sean O’Heslins colours, and was on their Senior Championship winning team in 1979 and 1982 lining out at Centre-field and Centre-half-forward respectively when he was captain of the team that lost the1984 Final.
Happy Christmas
Finally, we would like to wish all our members supporters, and sponsors both here at home and overseas a very happy Christmas and a prosperous new year. We would also like to thank the Leitrim Observer for their help and co-operation during 2024.
