St Francis and Glencar Manor will contest the U21 A Football Championship Final this Saturday at 2.45pm in Pairc Sean. Both sides have had impressive runs to the final so a rip roaring contest is expected.

Elsewhere, the last of the League finals takes place on Saturday at 2.45 in Cloone when Fenagh and St Marys contest the ACL Division 5 Final.

Best of luck to all the teams this weekend.

GAA Football Gold DVD featuring All-Ireland highlights from 1947-1959 is launched by the IFI Irish Film Archive at Croke Park by former champion footballer Minister  Jimmy Deenihan,  Dublin Manager Pat Gilroy, and current and former Dublin champion footballers including Bernard Brogan and Kevin Heffernan.

The IFI Irish Film Archive launch GAA Football Gold DVD at Croke Park today with a gathering of footballers of different generations who will toast a different era in the history of Gaelic Football. The GAA Football Gold DVDis the first time that the All- Ireland Football highlights from the National Film Institute (now the IFI) has been available to own at home. It follows the hugely successful GAA Hurling Gold DVD which was one of last Christmas’ must have stocking-fillers. The beautifully presented DVD is priced €19.99 and is available from www.ifi.ie, the IFI Film Shop and all good retailers, with profits going to the newly launched IFI Irish Film Archive Preservation Fund.
The films capture a different era of gameplay and some of the greatest football players in GAA history such as Galway’s Frankie Stockwell and Seán Purcell, Cork’s Denis “Toots” Kelleher, Dublin’s Kevin Heffernen, Kerry’s Mick O’Connell and Seán Murphy; and Cavan’s Peter Donohoe, P.J Duke and John Joe O’Reilly. The DVD includes wins for Kerry, Meath, Dublin, Mayo and Galway as well as a golden era for Cavan football with three wins and a rare All-Ireland victory for Louth.

The extraordinary atmosphere at Croke Park  is well documented with capacity crowds being swelled by fence-jumpers, roof-walkers, canine pitch invaders,  Bishops, Presidents and Taoisigh. The finals were occasions of huge national significance, the political and religious pageantry of the era are prominently highlighted while the footage of supporters arriving in Dublin and families gathered around the wireless back home provide priceless records of the social history of the time. Much of the commentary is provided by the legendary Michael O’Hehir who’s infectious passion for the game and humourous style more than cover any hiccups in the emerging technology.

Five time Kerry All-Ireland winner Jimmy Deenihan TD., Minister for Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht welcomed the release of the DVD saying, ‘GAA is a key part of our Irish identity, it is important for us to be able to see and enjoy this interesting stage in the evolution and development of our Gaelic Games. Without the work of the IFI Irish Film Archive in collecting and preserving important parts of our past such as this, we wouldn’t have this valuable record of our past achievements. I am pleased that funding from my Department was provided through the Arts Council, to support the IFI Irish Film Archive to ensure the important work of making accessible our moving image heritage continues”.

Kasandra O’Connell of the IFI Irish Film Archive said ‘We are delighted to follow up the success of last year’sGAA Hurling Gold DVD with this fascinating collection for Gaelic Football Fans also taken from the vaults of the IFI Irish Film Archive. The fact that this amazing footage survives serves as a reminder of the importance of the work of the IFI Irish Film Archive, and that our moving image heritage is an invaluable part of our cultural identity that needs to be actively protected.’

The films have been painstakingly remastered and digitised by the staff of the IFI Irish Film Archive, who preserve the original film reels in their climate-controlled vaults. The Archive holds thousands of reels of commercial and amateur footage, a moving image record of Ireland’s history from 1897 to the present. The IFI ensures that this rich resource is shared with the public in as many ways as possible including research access, public screenings, and events in Dublin, nationally and internationally. The release of key titles on DVD is another way to make this rich material available to audiences.

GAA Football Gold is the sixth in a series of DVD releases from the IFI Irish Film Archive which also includes the feature film Irish Destiny (1926) and Seoda, a collection of short Irish films from 1948-1970, The O’Kalem Colletion, and the hugely successful GAA Hurling Gold DVD. All six DVDs are available from the IFI Film Shop,www.ifi.ie and all leading DVD retailers.

Annaduff captured the Senior League title on Saturday last in Pairc Sean when they defeated Melvin Gaels on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-11. We take this opportunity to congratulate them on a wonderful victory. Annaduff have been a team in the ascendency over the last number of years. For the last two seasons they contested the senior championship semi finals and last season they lost the League Final so the weekends victory was just reward for this group of players.

The Melvin Gaels club will be disappointed by the defeat but can certainly take a lot of pride in their performances and development over the entire season. They won the Intermediate and Junior A Championships and next weekend they will contest the Division 4 League Final. As already mentioned, this time last year Annaduff were defeated in the League final so maybe Melvin Gaels can look to that for motivation.

Well done again to Annaduff.

Cloone captured the Junior C Championship crown on Saturday last in Ballinamore when they defeated a gallant Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher side in the replayed final.

Well done to Cloone on their great win but especially to both teams on producing two absorbing contests.

Melvin Gaels welcome the Mayo Intermediate Football Champions – Davitts this Sunday at 2.30pm in Pairc Sean. Hopes are high in the County that they can reach this years provincial decider and no doubt they will if they display the same appetite and self-belief as they did against the Sligo Intermediate Football Champions Coolaney Mullinabreena in the pre-lim game.

Coiste Chontae Liatroma take this opportunity to wish them the very best of luck on Sunday and we hope there is a large Leitrim following in Pairc Sean to support them.

Extra Time if necessary

An epic encounter last weekend and we expect more of the same in the replay this Saturday at 3.45pm in Ballinamore.

Both teams will feel they left it behind them last Sunday and this is sure to spur them both on in the replay. Another full-blooded contest is on the cards and don’t be surprised if extra time is required.

May the best team win.

GAA/JOBBRIDGE

The GAA aims to provide meaningful internships, which will enable interns to grow in competence and confidence as they develop their capabilities, on the basis of experience and reflection.

JobBridge is a new National Internship Scheme that will provide work experience placements for interns for a 6 or 9 month period. The aim of the National Internship Scheme is to assist in breaking the cycle where jobseekers are unable to get a job without experience, either as new entrants to the labour market after education or training or as unemployed workers wishing to learn new skills. The scheme will also give people a real opportunity to gain valuable experience to bridge the gap between study and the beginning of their working lives.

The GAA has always placed on emphasis on Social Capital – Scáth a Chéile – and Civic Contribution. The JobBridge initiative has provided the GAA with the means to make a contribution and to provide unemployed individuals with the opportunity to utilise the skills that they have learned during training or education in a practical work environment for the first time, or, indeed, to enhance the skills that they have already gained through previous employment.

The GAA/JobBridge Internship Scheme will provide unemployed individuals with the opportunity to develop and advance their skills in a practical work environment. In conjunction with the JobBridge initiative the GAA may be able to offer up to 200 internships, at any one time, in the areas of Games Development and Administration.

The first phase of internships as part of the GAA/JobBridge scheme have gone live today at www.jobbridge.gaa.ie and www.jobbridge.ie – both links are available on the Leitrim GAA Website.

Race for the Park We are having our fair share of Opinion Polls about the race for the Park. Ultimately, the people will decide very shortly and there will be a new name on the door of the Áras. In the run up to last Sundays Preliminary Rounds of the AIB Connacht Intermediate and Senior Championship games in Pairc Sean, local GAA opinion polls would have forecast a Leitrim double. Unfortunately the Leitrim public did not have the opportunity to decide the winners, it had to be sorted on the field. Melvin Gaels did deliver and in style, with established stars like Man of the Match Emyln Mulligan blending with new kids on the block like the highly impressive Peter McGowan to do the business for Kinlough and for Leitrim. Their march to Connacht glory has certainly begun on a high note, with the added bonus of a Leitrim home venue for the Semi-final clash with the Mayo champions Davitts. Undoubtedly that will be a major hurdle to overcome, but the hunger for a Connacht title will surely spur on the Gaels, so the noses will be to the grindstone until Sunday November 6th, when the whole county will rally to the support of the men in blue and white. Achieving four county senior titles in a row is no mean feat, so it looked fairly odds on for Glencar Manorhamilton to get the better of Sligo champions Tourlestrane and earn another tilt at St. Brigids of Roscommon. But form seemed to go out the window and despite the promptings of the large home support, Manor only seemed to perform in fits and starts and we saw just flashes of the free-flowing play of many other displays. Things looked good when six points up, but Tourlestrane showed every bit as much hunger for success as the Leitrim champions did and nobody could complain about the end result. The inquests will go on around the Market Square in the coming days, but nothing can detract from what has been achieved by the players to date, so any disappointment will have to be tinged with respect and acknowledgement for the massive efforts of all concerned. The half time score relayed from Hyde Park that Leitrim Gaels Juniors were level with Creggs lifted Leitrim hearts and hopes of a possible treble on the day, but it was not to be, as Creggs held out for a three point victory. So the race for the Park – for Croke park – is now in the sole hands of Melvin Gaels. Opinion polls may fancy them, but the Gaels realise only too well that what matters is what happens the next day and the day after and the day after that again. It is a long road, with the next test on 30th October. Go n-éirí libh, Gaeil na Meilge.
