Newtowngore Engineering U-17’s: The lads lost out to Leitrim Gaels in the 13 aside championship final the weekend before last but they put in a great effort all summer. They were beaten by a physically stronger team but with the bulk of the squad underage for at least another year they will have better times ahead. Brendan Canning

The news of the sudden passing of Brendan Canning was a huge shock to the club and the community, as it became known last Thursday morning. Brendan had a deep involvement in a wide range of voluntary community activities for over 50 years ranging from the GAA to the credit union to amateur drama. In sporting terms, he would be described today as a teenage prodigy. Brendan played in goals for St. Francis as a 16-year-old for a historic Junior Championship success in 1963, a first for Drumshanbo. In 1965 he had the unique distinction of representing Leitrim at minor, U-21, junior and senior level in the same year while still in secondary school. He also won a Connacht Minor Hurling Championship medal with Leitrim at this time scoring 3 goals in the final. Indeed he joked that in the All Ireland Semi Final against Limerick which was a one-sided affair, he was marked by future All-Star & All Ireland Winner, Pat Hartigan, and the pair made a deal that late in the game Brendan would be given free passage to goal to put a gloss on the scoreline – It could only happen to Brendan! He represented Leitrim at senior level for a number of years & enjoyed further club success by winning a three in a row of Division 1 League Titles with Allen Gaels in 1973, 74 & ’75 and was part of that team which contested 6 league finals on the trot and lost a senior championship final in 1973 after a replay. He continued playing into the mid-1980’s and captained the club in the centenary year of 1984. Brendan was also a keen contributor to Scor and excelled in Question Time and was part of the legendary trips to England in 1985 to raise funds for the purchase of The Mayflower as a community centre. He served the club as team selector, referee, coach, Scor participant and he was a great man to pen a poem to celebrate a famous club victory or to contribute to match programmes. He was club secretary on a number of occasions and as recently as 2002 when the Club last won the senior championship and although Brendan would never have said it, he was hugely proud to see his son, Andy make the breakthrough to the senior team and collect a championship medal. One of Brendan’s greatest contributions to the club is often overlooked and that was the role he played in coaching & nurturing a young crop of players in the early 1980’s that would go on to enjoy great success at senior level in the years ahead. He was responsible for creating the ‘town league’ that brought on a generation of young players in that period. As a man, Brendan was fiercely loyal, utterly dependable and a straight talker – he wouldn’t always tell you what you wanted to hear but maybe it was what you needed to hear and there was always common sense & logic behind it. To those who knew him best it will be the quick wit and sense of fun that will be the abiding memory and we will miss those humorous exchanges most of all. The Club performed a guard of honour on Monday at his funeral and a minute’s silence was observed before the County Final on Sunday afternoon. The Club extends deepest condolences to Rosie, Trevor, Andrea, Trina  & Andrew, to his brothers John and Mel and sister, Joan, as well as the McGowan, McKeon & Guckian Families, his extended family & a wide circle of friends. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

U-17’s
The lads had a great win over Glencar Manorhamilton in the park on Saturday in the championship semi final on a scoreline of 2-15 to 4-03. First half goals from Aaron McCawley & David Gallagher laid the foundation for victory and although Manorhamilton stage a second half revival the lads had enough in the tank to secure the win.  We now play Leitrim Gaels in the final possibly this Saturday so watch out for the fixture. Best of luck to the players and to Micky, Fergus & Noel.

Barna Recycling U-13 Boys 15 aside Shield Final
The boys were pipped at the last by Mohill after a thrilling encounter in Fenagh on Sunday morning with the final score 4-10 to 3-15. We led at the break by 3-08 to 2-09 after an end to end half with our goals coming from Mark Reynolds, Cian Dennis & Jake Tobin. Mohill started the better after the interval and levelled after 5 minutes. Ciaran McMorrow, who is just back from injury after a year on the sidelines, hit 2 quick fire points as the teams traded scores. A goal from Jake Tobin put us in the lead with time running out but Mohill struck a goal themselves in the last minute & added a point in injury time to seal the win. Well done to Cyril, Kenneth, Enda, Farrell and the team who played their hearts out not just on Sunday but throughout the championship. The team was: Rory O’Donnell, Fionn Gilraine, Padraig Keane, James O’Connor, Aiden Dowler, Damien Gilmartin, Karl Foley, Jake Tobin (2-01), Liam McGourty (0-03), Dean Cornyn (0-01), Mark Reynolds (1-02) Arik Oberwan (0-01), Ray McGarry, Hassan Deen Swarray, Cian Dennis (1-00), Daniel O’Loughlin, Ruairi Greer, Prezemek Zaremba, Ciaran McMorrow (0-02), James Rock, Thomas McKeon, Adam Casey.

Best ladies team was Dolores Mulvey, Kathleen Loftus and Marian Fahy with the longest drive going to Caleb Duffy and nearest the pin to Niall Loftus. A word of thanks to Captain of the Golf society Chris Fahy for all his help and the society in general for providing so many players on the day. Senior Championship
We came out the right side of the relegation playoff against Annaduff on Sunday morning on a scoreline of 1-08 to 1-05. The game looked to have fallen victim to the weather on Saturday evening but both clubs were anxious to get the game played and so tossed for home advantage with us winning the toss & the game was played in Drumshanbo. The playing conditions were difficult with wind & rain making life tricky for both teams. We got off to the better start with Ciaran Walsh snatching an opportunist goal in the seventh minute as we had the benefit of the cross filed breeze. Neil Nolan was called on to make a full length save and it was the 20th minute before Annaduff got off the mark with a free and a second placed ball 5 minutes later left the minimum between the sides. Nicholas Moore replied to stretch the lead but the visitors were reduced to 14 men with a red card just before the break which left the game finely balanced. Annaduff made light of the numerical disadvantage with their best spell in the opening 10 minutes of the second half when they struck for 1-02 with Ray Cox to the fore. At this stage they led 1-04 to 1-01 and were very much on top. As the game entered the last quarter we needed inspiration from somewhere and Nicholas struck a great long range point from play into the breeze to kick start a recovery. Ciaran Walsh added a point in the 49th minute and we began to move fluently at last with Nicholas hitting a great 45 followed by another point from play to put us ahead. Martin Beirne added 2 quick fire points one from play & one a free in the 56th & 57th minutes. Annaduff struck a point in the last minute but fittingly it was left to Nicholas Moore to complete the scoring from a free to give us an invaluable victory. Well done to the players and management on pulling out a big performance when it was needed most but it doesn’t disguise what was a very disappointing season. We all need to take stock over the winter and have a fresh approach for 2018.
