Strictly Come Dancing – Over the years the club have hosted many events and have celebrated some amazing successes both on and off the pitch but this Strictly night will certainly live long in the memory and will be placed near the top of the pile. The night itself exceeded our expectations and hopefully that of the more than 1700 people who attended, it was a night full of outstanding entertainment led by our immensely talented dancers, wonderful judges and of course our MC for the night John Lynch who helped pull it all together. The effort, determination and skill of our dancers was a sight to behold, after 8 intensive weeks of training they stepped out on the stage full of enthusiasm and without a nerve in sight to produce an outstanding show.

We must give a tremendous thank you to them, they have given up a vast amount of their time and energy to help make the night such a success, many of them had no affiliation to the club but still stepped forward to support us and have now become lifelong friends.

To all our wonderful sponsors who supported the event on the night, their financial support was astounding and we are deeply grateful for everything that they have done for us. Again as with the dancers many of these companies and individuals had no affiliation with the club but when approached they stepped forward and gave freely. We ask all of our supporters to please support these businesses where possible, a full list will be published soon.

To the organising committee led by Ruairi O’Sullivan and Niall Gormley we must give a tremendous thank you, again as with the dancers they have put in a supreme effort to ensure the success of the night, they gave up so much of their free time over the last six months and again we are eternally grateful for the sacrifices they have made to ensure the wonderful outcome.

To our outstanding Judges and MC John Lynch, we thank you for your amazing contribution to ensuring the night’s success.

We must also thank all of our ticket sellers for going out on the dark evenings and selling the event, The Slieve Russell for letting us use their wonderful facility, our patrons that supported and attended our event, and to anyone else that has helped out in any way we also give thanks.

The night itself was exhilarating with each of the 20 couples making a grandstand entrance before they made their way to the stage where they were introduced to the large crowd after the introductions were completed each of the couples completed their routines before being judged. The dance routines completed by each of the couples were excellent, the effort and choreography were first class and the production values were certainly on a par or better than what you would see on BBC TV, while the group dance performed by the entire group was a sight to behold.

The most difficult task of the night was certainly the one undertaken by our excellent Judges John Cryan, Erin Moran, Sarah McLoughlin and Neal Tully, the judges were certainly impressed by our dancers as much as we were and had the unenviable job of cutting the group down from twenty couples to five. After a great deal of debate, the judges picked their final five couples which were Cathy Smyth and Jim Flynn, Caroline Martin and David McCabe, Katie Duignan and Philip Casserly, Claire Fanning and Ronan Tiernan, and finally Dennis Doonan and Siobhan McCartin.

With the final five picked it was all up to the dancers to take to the stage for one last time to strut their stuff in the hope of being crowned the Ballinamore Strictly champions 2017. After another exhilarating performance by the final five couples, it was left to the judges to decide the winners.

After some time deliberating the decision it was left to John Lynch to deliver the verdict we were all waiting for, the first winners to be called out in two surprise categories  were firstly Liam McGirl and his dance partner Susan McGovern who were crowned most improved couple followed by Tracy McTague and Darryl McFarland who were named most glamorous.

After the surprise Categories, it was left to John to announce our third and second placed couples with firstly Claire Fanning and Ronan Tiernan placed third and Dennis Doonan and Siobhan McCartin placed second.

Now it was the time we were all waiting for, to see who would be crowned the Ballinamore Strictly Come Dancing Champions of 2017, envelope in hand John Lynch delivered the verdict we were all waiting for with Katie Duignan and Philip Casserly deservedly announced as our champions ! the last act of the evening was for the winning couple to take to the stage for one last time to woo us once again with their winning routine.

As with any event of this nature it’s very difficult to pick a winner and each and every dancer who took to the stage was certainly a winner in all our eyes !

On the night we also held our annual prize draw with the following people being drawn out as winners!

  1.       Grand Prize €3000 Gavin McNerney, Dromard, Longford
  2.       €1000    Sarah Fitz, Cloone

Jackie Gallagher – Ballinamore and Melvin Gaels Footballer – RIP – The death has taken place of former Seán O’Heslin’s and Melvin Gaels’ footballer, Jackie Gallagher. Jackie was full back and captain when the Gaels won their first ever Senior Championship in 1959 and he was in the same position as they completed a four-in-a-row of titles from 1959 to 1962. He won a fifth title in 1965. That wasn’t Jackie’s only senior title because he was corner back on the Ballinamore Seán O’Heslin’s team that won the 1956 Senior Championship. Ironically, Melvin Gaels beat O’Heslin’s in the 1959 final to take their first title and, in a most unusual scoreline, it finished 1-6 to 0-0. Jackie spent his working life teaching in Ballinamore Vocational School.

Jackie Gallagher was also a prominent county player and, while he started as a corner back, he starred in goals for Leitrim throughout the golden period when they reached four Connacht finals in a row. He was goalkeeper in three of them including the memorable 1958 final against Galway. In 1962, he won a Connacht Junior Championship with Leitrim and also played in the 1959 National League Semi-final against Derry in Croke Park. In times when few goalkeepers took the kick outs, Jackie’s long deliveries were famous and would be eminently suited for today’s “mark”. Jackie was also brother-in-law to Aidan McGowan, who was Uachtarán Comhairle Connacht.

Our sympathy to his wife Tess, daughters Finola, Maureen and Aileen, son Niall, family and friends.

Sonas síoraí d’fhear uasal macánta thar na bearta, mar mhúinteoir agus mar pheileadóir.

Minor Ladies defeated in Championship Final: Hard luck to our minor team who came up short against Glencar/Manor in the Championship final on Saturday afternoon. They performed brilliantly in the opening twenty minutes of each half but the opposition proved to be that bit too strong in the closing stages. Indeed, going into the last quarter of the game there were just five points between the sides but a few late goals put paid to any chances of a winning comeback being on the cards. The girls have had a cracking year, winning every game bar those against the weekend’s opponents, and given how young the panel is we have no doubt that they’ll be back contesting Minor glory again before too long! Good luck to Manor in the Connacht Championship.

U16 Girls Championship Final: Best of luck to all of our U16 panel who take on Dromahair in the Championship final this weekend. Day, time and venue to be confirmed on Facebook soon. Any support for their big day would be much appreciated by everyone.

County Champions It was another mighty day for the club on Sunday as we were crowned the Pyramid Book Makers Junior A Champions, 20 years after our last win in the competition it was highly enjoyable to sit in the stands with a number of players from that team and watch this young team with a few old heads be crowned County Champions. Special thanks as ever must go to the players, management team and of course their families who have helped the club claim this very important title. There was a large crowd in attendance at the game with young and old filling the stands hoping for a great game, and a great match we got.

The Ballinamore lads started the game well with Luke Murphy and Steven McTague knocking over a couple of points before Manor added one of their own. It was nip and tuck with Manor drawing level before Luke again with a free saw us regain the lead only for Manor to keep pegging us back. Steven Mctague scored another impressive point to take the lead with Mark McCrory adding another to leave Ballinamore winning by 2. Next up was Barry McGovern who scored an excellent goal followed by a Manor point two further frees from Luke and a great Ryan Gavin point to leave the scores Ballinamore 1:08 to 0:04 and in control. Manor were then awarded a penalty which was brilliantly saved by Dennis only for the referee to order a retake which was scored, this proved to be the final score of the half and we went in leading by 4.

Manor started the second half well scoring 5 points to our one free to level the match, what followed was an excellent save by Dennis to what looked like a certain goal before Mark McCrory scored a late free to put Ballinamore back in the lead and Ronan O’Rourke point claimed an excellent victory.

With the final whistle, all that was left was to celebrate a great victory, with the players congratulated on the pitch by young and old and followed up with a victory parade through the town.

Well done to Luke Murphy who was named the man of the match There are some excellent videos, pictures and comments on our Facebook page for any of you that may have missed it live if you want to take a look !!

Junior A Semi Final

To steal a term from Sky TV it was certainly a Super Sunday for the club with our Junior A and U17 lads contesting critical matches on Sunday gone.

First up on Sunday Morning was the Junior A lads in a crucial semi-final against St Mary’s with a place in the county final up for grabs. The lads were in fine form against a seasoned St Mary’s team, it was a close match with Ballinamore just shading it by a couple of points at the end to leave the final score Ballinamore 0:13 and St Mary’s 0:11

Team: D Dolan, M O’Reilly, P McLoughlin, K O’Connor, P Murphy, J Fanning, D Feely, R Gavin, S McTague, A McTague, D Maxwell, Monty, L Murphy, M McRory, B McGovern, B Banks, D Murphy, A Goldrick, J Murphy, R O’Rourke, D Duignan, D Reynolds, B Beirne, A Burns, M Maguire, D Creaven, E McHugh

Under 17 Championship Final

It was certainly another exciting match in Pairc Sean on Sunday afternoon with the U17 lads taking on Fenagh in the inaugural U17 final. There was a great crowd in attendance from both clubs cheering on the teams and it certainly made for a great atmosphere and a very entertaining game. Fenagh started well and got a crucial goal in the first 5 mins, the Ballinamore lads reacted very well to the early set back and were back on level terms with Sean Christy scoring a fine goal, the goal spurned Ballinamore on and they quickly took the lead knocking over 4 points before Tom Prior scored another well-worked goal to leave Ballinamore on 2:05 to Fenagh’s 1:03. Both teams scored a further couple of points apiece to leave Ballinamore leading at halftime by 2:07 to 1:05. Fenagh started the second half in blistering fashion scoring a goal and 5 points to Ballinamore’s 1 point and levelling the score. Ballinamore again reacted extremely well with Cathal McHugh scoring a great goal before Sean Christy added a quick fourth. Ballinamore continued to press forward with Sean Christy grabbing his third goal and Daire Gleeson adding a sixth to leave Ballinamore well in control at the end and deserved County Champions, with a final score of 6:11 to 2:11.

A special well done must go to Tom Prior who was named the man of the match and to all the players who were excellent on the day and throughout the campaign. We must not forget to thank the management team of Diarmaid Keegan, Kevin McGovern and Adrian Smith who helped lead these fine men to a great victory and of course all the fans who turned out at the game and at the victory parade. Minor Ladies reach the Championship Final!

Well done to our minor team who had a 3-11 to 1-8 win over Fenagh/Kiltubrid on Friday night, cementing their spot in the Championship final. It was a hard-fought game on the heavy ground but thankfully the girls got the result their play deserved. Strictly Come Dancing

What an excellent night at Priors Ballinamore as the club introduced our dancers to a packed crowd, with even more following the action live on Facebook. There was plenty of cheering and laughter as the ever-excellent Adrian Smyth introduced the couples first to each other and then to the massed audience.

If the launch night was anything to go by the main event which is in the Slieve Russell on the 18th of November is one not to be missed.

Next up for our dancers will be a gruelling training regime where they will be put through their paces by a crack team of choreographers in preparation for the main event

Over the coming weeks, we will introduce you to our intrepid couples through our Facebook page where we will share lots of titbits on our dancers and provide further information on each of their individual sponsors.

If you’re not one of the 2150 people that have so far viewed the launch video it’s still available on our page.

Special thanks to our main sponsors Priors and Gordon Hughes estate agents for their support so far and helping to make this possible

Under 17 Semi Final

The U-17 semi-final played against Kinlough in St Osnatts GAA pitch outside Manorhamilton. Played in perfect conditions on Saturday at 4pm.

SOH won the fixture on a score line of 3-9 to 2-7. It was a close game throughout with SOH having the majority of the play in both halves. We were unlucky not to convert two goal chances in the first half but held a slender lead at half time. We took our opportunities in the second with a goal from a penalty and two from play. Some great points scored also over the course of the game both from frees and play.

Although we were fairly comfortable coming towards the end of the game things got a bit scrappy. We held our nerve and now move on to the final against Fenagh. No date fixed yet for this match. Team starting Jack Gallogley, Danny Smyth, Nathan McCartin, Eoin Curran, Eoin Shanley, Francis McGovern, James Creamer, Mathew Morris, Cathal McHugh, Dylan Beirne, Senan Harte, James Honeyman, Joe Sweeney, Tom Prior, Dara Gleason. Subs used Aaron McBrien, Sean Christy.

The final has been set for October the 15th where the lads will take on Fenagh at 16:00 in Pairc Sean
