Dunnes Bar Division 2 – The Senior team played their third league game on Saturday last when Kiltubrid were the visitors to sunny Dromod. Bornacoola played a strong first half and were in control for most of the first 30 minutes and led by five points at halftime. In the second half, Kiltubrid cut the gap to just two points midway through, and it looked like a tight finish was in store. However, a Sean McKeon goal and some unanswered points ensured it was the home team who would take the spoils on a 1-15 to 0-11 scoreline. Team on duty was Conor Hackett, Kevin Mulligan, Jason Conroy, Brian Duffy, Liam Mulligan (0-1), Conor Mc Cauley David Mulligan (0-1), Alan Croghan (0-1), Colm Farrell, , Cian Mallon, Damien Moran (0-5) , Ronan Mulligan (0-1) , Ollie Vaughan (0-4) Gary McCloskey, Sean McKeon (1-02) . Subs used were: Michael Duignan, Brian Conroy, Daniel Farrell, Roy Keenan and Gearoid Mulligan. This Saturday we are fixed to play in Carrigallen at 7pm in a Division 2 league round without county players.

It is all much appreciated . Underage News – Training will continue for all age groups on Saturday mornings at 10.30 am sharp. We are asking this year if all players could be there on time as it makes it easier for coaches for setting up drills. Please also ensure your child wears a gum shield to all training sessions. If your child has not registered please contact Suzanne Maguire on 087 3898205 as we will need everyone registered for insurance purposes.
Parish Clean Up On Saturday, May 5th – The club co-ordinated the annual clean-up of the roadsides in the Bornacoola parish area as part of the National Spring clean. A special word of thanks to all who assisted with the clean-up. It was yet again an eye-opener to see the amount and type of rubbish dumped on our roads. It could be argued that pay-by-weight charges could encourage more of it. Without a doubt, Ireland’s litter problem requires behavioural change and more personal responsibility.
Clothes Collection – Our Annual Clothes collection will this year take place on Saturday morning, July 14th – so start gathering together your old clothes and clobber etc for collection on that day. Contact Noel McCloskey at 087 6454317 who will organise collection if needed.
Congratulations – Our congratulations to Gerard and Orla Moffett, Dromard on the birth of baby Sean last week- a brother to Sam. Hopefully a future footballer for the black and amber!

Swan Bar Division 4 – The Juniors returned to winning ways on Sunday when they had a hard-working victory over Ballinaglera to move into joint second in the league table. Panel on duty was Connor Hackett, Luke Jones, Kevin Mulligan, Liam Mulligan, Gearoid Mulligan, Mervyn Howard, Robert O Beirne, Colm Farrell, Daniel Farrell, Ronan Mulligan, Roy Keenan, Kevin Shanley, Liam Jones, Jonathan Duffy, Mark McKeon, John Shanley, Michael Duignan, Trevor Howard, Shane Conroy and Mark McCloskey
Wedding Bells – Congratulations to senior team stalwart Damian Mc Guinness (Cloncarne) and new bride Leanne Mullaney (Castleconnor) who were married last weekend and celebrated with a reception in Lough Rynn. Also to Darren Conboy and Lorraine Canning who tied the knot the previous week. Best wishes for long life and happiness to you all.
Ladies Football – Congratulations and well done to the girls of Bornacoola/St Mary’s who have qualified for the Division 3 League Final following a 5-15 to 3-5 semi-final victory over Keeldra Gaels in sunny conditions in Páirc Naomh Muire on Sunday afternoon last. In what was a very competitive match throughout, it was the greater efficiency of the home side’s attack, allied to staunch defending that proved the difference between the teams at the end. The girls were out of the blocks early and once they found the range for the first time they converted a greater ratio of scoring chances to carry a 3-9 to 1-3 lead into the interval, goalkeeper Caroline Guckian saving a penalty just before the break. To their credit, the Keeldra girls never threw in the towel and provided very stern opposition right to the very end but the girls tagged on a number of second-half scores to keep them at arm’s length. The girls will now face a tough test in the final with unbeaten Dromahair providing the opposition. This game will be played at a date to be decided later in May. On duty on Sunday last were: Caroline Guckian, Cora McCauley, Jasmine Maye, Emily Reynolds, Lorraine Guckian, Enya Guckian, Alison McKeon, Kasey Bruen (1-4), Aisling Leahy (2-3), Sara Crowe (2-2), Hannah Reynolds, Kelly Howard (0-2), Hannah Bird (0-3), Ellen Woods (0-1), Tanya Boyle and Kathy Butler.
Dunnes Bar Senior League – No Senior action for the last few weeks as Leitrim prepared for their Connacht Championship game on Sunday next in Gaelic Park, New York. Best of luck to Damian and the entire Leitrim panel in what will be a very tricky assignment. Our Seniors return to action on Saturday week, May 13th, when Kiltubrid are the visitors to Dromod for a 7pm throw-in.

Swan Bar Division 4 – The Juniors returned to action on Saturday evening last in Ballinamore when they took on the table toppers Sean O Heslin’s. In a game that never really got firing, the Ballinamore men ran out deserving 1-10 to 0-7 victors; however the Bors did a lot of things right and had they taken any of four excellent goal chances, the outcome might well have been different. The team on duty was Conor Hackett. Patrick Kozak, David Mulligan, Kevin Mulligan, Liam Mulligan, Mervyn Howard, Luke Jones, Liam Jones, Colm Farrell (0-1), Jonathan Duffy (0-2), Robert O Beirne, Danny Farrell, Ronan Mulligan, Cian Mallon and Kevin Shanley (0-4). Subs used were: Trevor Howard, Gearoid Mulligan and Marc Mc Keon. We return to action this weekend when Ballinaglera will be the visitors to Dromod.

Sympathy – Our deepest sympathies are extended to the Cox family (Cloooncolry) on the recent passing of Lorna’s husband Andrew Mc Dermott in Dublin; also to the Mc Garry family (Ballygeeher) on the passing of Angela’s brother PJ Murray in Athenry and who was laid to rest at the weekend. Ar dheis Dé go raibh siad beirt.
Shay Reynolds RIP – It was with great sadness that we learned on Sunday morning of the passing of a true legend of our club, our President Shay Reynolds. Shay was widely known and loved, not just in Cloncolry, Dromod and Bornacoola, but throughout Leitrim and far beyond. He was the epitome of the community volunteer and was at the heart of everything positive that took place in the area over the years, from his time as a youth in Mrs Moffatt’s Dromod marching band, to his stage appearances in Cloonturk hall, the wren boys, his work with Dromod Development, Bornacoola Community Development, Cloonmorris Graveyard Committee and the Cloonturk Christmas choir to name but a few.
Yet it was undoubtedly the GAA that provided his most passionate outlet. Over the years he became synonymous with Bornacoola GAA, but his footballing life actually had its roots with our neighbours Annaduff, with whom he played in the 1960’s while our own club lay dormant. And he played with great success too, starring on the losing side in the 1966 County final against Aughavas. While he captured a JFC medal with his victorious Annaduff teammates in 1972, there was little doubt that once the Bors reformed in 1973, Shay would cross back over the Eslin River and for the next number of years he starred for the Bors as they reached two Junior Championship finals in 1977 and 1978, unfortunately losing both. Consolation came in the form of a Junior league title in 1976 but when talking with Shay about those years, it was clear that the fun and enjoyment off the field was almost as important as what happened on it and that particular group were widely known for their sportsmanship and ability to enjoy the social as well as the playing side of the game. And Shay, of course, was always at the heart of the craic! When he retired from playing, he took up refereeing and again gained the respect of his peers when being named Leitrim Referee of the Year in 1980; for spells in both the 1990’s and in the 2000’s, his attention returned to on-field matters when he served as a selector with various Bornacoola adult teams.
He was also heavily involved in Scór throughout his life – initially as a participant and later as an administrator when he served in a number of roles, including as Treasurer of the Connacht Scór Committee; indeed he became well known throughout the province in this role and it was a source of great pride to him that all three of his sons – the late Kevin, Cathal and John – participated in Scór and kept the cultural flame burning. His greatest contribution to Bornacoola GAA however came in his fourteen years as Chairman of the club (1989 to 2002), where with his good friends Declan Bohan, as Secretary, and Sean Mc Gowan, as Treasurer, the Club entered a period of growth that saw a plethora of titles secured at underage level and participation levels reach new heights as Bornacoola began to field three adult men’s and an adult ladies team annually (all within just 25 years of reforming from nothing as a club). The Club moved from Junior through Intermediate before finally obtaining senior status again in the Autumn of 1997, something that pleased our then Chairman greatly. To see the Bors, with his son John as part of the panel, reach the County senior finals of 2005 and 2008, was the fulfilment of a dream for Shay that at many points in the journey must have felt a million miles away. An ever-present on the sidelines as a supporter, it was always instructive to seek his views in the Railway (or the Copper) after a game and if there was a small Power’s to hand when seeking them, then so much the better!
His love for Bornacoola was only matched by his pride in his native County. For home games in Páirc Seán he would be on duty as a steward; for away games there was the pre-match pep talk and a little sustenance to be consumed in Jimmy’s (or Cox’s) before loading up with his close friends the late Jimmy O’Connor and TP Cox and pointing the car in the direction of the Hyde or Tuam, Aughrim or Dr Cullen Park. There were more bad days than good, but his loyalty and pride never wavered. It was appropriate therefore that he was appointed as Chairman of the Leitrim Supporters Club in 2010 and he – unsurprisingly – excelled in that role too helping to oversee the generation of hundreds of thousands of Euros over the years through the Supporters Club Draw. For many years he was a voice of wisdom and reason at County Committee meetings, and always represented the Bornacoola view fairly but firmly.
Yet even the love and commitment he showed for the local community, for his parish, and for his county was overshadowed by the love he bestowed on his best friend and lifelong companion Mary, and on his sons Kevin, Cathal and John. Kevin’s sudden passing a few years ago, while in his mid-30’s, was an unbelievably cruel burden to bear. The grace and bravery with which they carried their grief typified the character of the Reynolds’ family and through it all, Shay was the rock for all around him. The last month of Shay’s life was spent in Mullingar hospital, surrounded by his family, but for someone who gave so much to so many, who was such a public presence and who was so generous with his time for others, there was something fitting in his last weeks being surrounded by and filled with those who knew and loved him the most. We can but offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mary, Cathal and John, to his son in law Simon, daughter in law Nicola, grandson Kian, granddaughter Laila, sisters Maureen Hanley (Strokestown) and Betty Murray (Greystones) brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and many, many friends.
Known all over the County, when news of his death broke on Sunday morning, our Club Facebook page was inundated with messages of sympathy from those who struggled to get their heads around the departure of a man who was simply a colossus in the community. The majority of posts used the word “gentleman” and that was not by accident. He was a friend to so many people, in so many ways a father to our community, and his easy way, generosity of spirit, his ability to tell a great story and that big laugh will never leave the memory. We are comforted by the fact that somewhere in heaven he is sharing a drink with those he loved and who have gone before him, and when he’s called on for a song, the Four Green Fields or the Croppy Boy will surely get an airing. Our loss is their gain. Níl tú imithe uainn a chara dhílis, ach romhainn. Solas na bhfláitheas dá anam uasal.
Shay Reynolds RIP Leitrim Supporters Club Draw March 2018

Scór – Unfortunately, no joy for our Trath na gCeist team at the All Ireland finals of Scór in Sligo at the weekend; however, yet again a great achievement to have made it to the All Ireland final and yet again they represented Leitrim with great pride.
Underage News – Training will commence for all age groups on Saturday 21st of April at 10.30 am sharp. We are asking this year if all players could be there on time as it makes it easier for coaches for setting up drills. Our coaches have been busy training and as a club we have met our requirements that all coaches have a minimum of foundatìon and child protection training with many coaches at level 1 standard and first aid training. Please ensure your child wears gumshield to all training sessions. U9 Blitz – Aseries of U9 blitzes for the Bors got underway on Saturday last and will continue for the next number of Saturdays. Last Saturday, St Marys were the visitors to Dromod and we had a tremendous turnout with three Bornacoola teams playing at the same time. We had both boys and girls teams togged out which was fantastic to see. A huge thank you to our coaches for setting everything up, to all of the parents involved for bringing snacks and for all their help in making drinks for the visiting children and parents. Next week we travel to Kinlough for a similar day’s activity.
Clothes Collection – Our Annual Clothes collection will this year take place on Saturday morning, July 14th – so start gathering together your old clothes, sheets etc for collection on the day
U13 Shield Final – Our eligible U13’s are competing with Gortletteragh this year and on Saturday last they finished off their league campaign with an appearance in the Shield Final against Allen Gaels in Drumshanbo. In a tremendous game of football played in a great spirit, Allen Gales had the elements in their favour in the first half and reached the interval with a three point lead. The second half proved to be a titantic struggle and while Gortletteragh entered the closing two minutes trailing by just a point, a late Allen Gaels goal secured a four point victory for the home team. Team was David Liu Doyle, Tommy Reen, Luke Mc Manus, George Glaze, Nathan Ryan, Oisin Maguire, Noah Mc Nulty, Mathew Davies, Ryan Fanning, Riaghan Ward, Jack Gannon, Adam Reen, Jonathan Boyle, Senan Woods, Aaron Carney and Jack Reynolds.
Mothers and others – Our Football for Mothers and Others got up and running again for 2018 recently – anyone interested in getting involved, should contact Cora Mc Cauley on 087 6104974
Division 2 – Annaduff were the visitors to Dromod on Saturday evening last, and a large crowd witnessed a close game full of the usual intensity associated with the local derby. It was the visitors who started the game in impressive fashion and after just 20 minutes, they led by 1-6 to 0-1 as the Bors appeared to be in difficulty in several sectors of the field. However, a strong rally approaching hhalf-timeensured the Bors registered the final three points of the half, to sit just five points in arrears at the interval. When sub Brian Conroy finished to the net 10 minutes into the second half, the gap was narrowed to a single point (1-6 to 1-5) and suddenly the game was in the melting pot. However but this was as close as the Bors managed to get and although it took an excellent save from Annaduff sub keeper Shane Cox to deny Damian Moran a late goal for the home side, it was the visitors who deservedly held on in an entertaining contest by 1-12 to 1-9. Next up for Bornacoola are Sean O Heslins who line out in Dromod on Sunday morning next at 12noon. Team and scorers were: Conor Hackett, Damian Mc Guinness, Jason Conroy, Brian Duffy, Mervyn Howard (0-1), David Mulligan, Liam Mulligan, Damian Moran (0-3), Alan Croghan (0-1), Cian Mallon, Sean Mc Keon (0-1), Danny Farrell, Ollie Vaughan, Gary Mc Closkey and Ronan Mulligan. Subs; Brian Conroy (1-1), Kevin Mulligan, Kevin Shanley and Colm Farrell.
Division 4 – Our Junior teams unbeaten run for 2018 came to an end on Sunday against Cloone. Trailing by 7 points to 4 at half time the Bors had a strong twenty minutes in the second half. With ten minutes to go we were trailing by just two points 0-10 to 0-8. Cloone then got a crucial goal and pushed on to add a further seven points in the final eight minutes leaving the final score Cloone1-17 Bornacoola 0-8.
Team and Scorers: Mark Mc Closkey, Liam Mulligan, Kevin Mulligan, Tony Shanley, Gearoid Mulligan, Robert O Beirne, Luke Jones, Colm Farrell, Michael Duignan (0-2), Roy Keenan (0-2), Daniel Farrell, Marc McKeon, John Shanley, Kevin Shanley (0-2), Jonathan Duffy (0-1), Cian Mallon and Ronan Mulligan (0-1)
Minors – Rinn Gaels completed their minor campaign when they travelled to Drumkeerin on Saturday morning last to play the Division 2 semi-final. In a game where the home side were deserving victors, the Gaels nonetheless passed up on a number of good chances that might have left the final score a little more reflective of a decent performance than the 5-8 to 2-4 results suggests. Team on duty was Jake Shields, James Doyle, Tom Reen, Brendan Davies, Ciaran Reen, Conor Niblock, James Cunningham, Oisín Niblock, Shane Reynolds, Odhrán Heslin, Mark Reynolds, Shane Mallon and Jamie Quinn. Subs were Ciaran Mc Glynn, Ryan Cunningham, Sean Og Hynes, Andrea Bacco, Sean O Riordan, Killian Mc Cauley and Ryan Lennon. The lads now have Championship to look forward to in July.
Ladies Football – The Bornacoola/St Mary’s Ladies played their third match of the 2018 League season on Sunday morning last as they hosted Aughawillan’s second team in Dromod. After a topsy-turvy encounter, they picked up their second victory but were left clinging on in the final few minutes as Aughawillan came with a late onslaught which threatened to derail their league ambitions. Final score: Bornacoola/St Mary’s 2-13 Aughawillan 3-7. After a bright early opening the girls spurned a number of scoring chances but after settling in they managed to hold a four-point interval lead. A barnstorming third quarter saw the girls into a commanding position before the last quarter Aughawillan dominance aided by two goals which reduced the lead to a mere kick of the ball. The girls held out after a most enjoyable and competitive contest played in the first spring-like conditions of 2018. They are out again on Sunday morning next as they make the short journey to Annaduff to take on the home side at 11am with League Semi Final placings to be decided. On duty, on Sunday morning last were Caroline Guckian, Jasmine Maye, Cora McCauley, Emily Reynolds, Lorraine Guckian, Enya Guckian, Kasey Bruen, Alison McKeon, Aisling Leahy, Sara Crowe, Rachel McGarry, Hannah Reynolds, Lisa Guckian, Hannah Bird, Tanya Boyle and Ellen Woods.

U-13 League – Our U13 players had their last two league games with Gortletteragh this week.On a cold sunny Wednesday evening in Dromod, we played against a strong Kiltubrid outfit and were made to fight hard for a narrow victory in an excellent all round team display. We were unable to hit those heights on Thursday evening in Gortletteragh as St. Bridgids proved too strong for us despite a hard working performance from us. It is now on to the shield section of the league and we would like to wish our lads the best of luck in it. Panel of players used over both games David Doyle, Tommy Reen, Luke McManus, George Glaze, Nathan Ryan, Oisin Maguire, Jack Reynolds, Matthew Davis, Adam Reen, Riaghan Ward, Jack Gannon, Jonathan Duffy, Noah McNulty Senan Woods and Ryan Fanning.
Mothers and Others – Our Football for Mothers and Others got up and running again for 2018 recently – anyone interested in getting involved, should contact Cora Mc Cauley on 087 6104974

This is Your Life – Our thanks to everyone who supported our This is Your Life night in Lough Rynn on Easter Saturday night. Sean Mc Gowan and Declan Bohan were those who received the Red Book treatment and we thank them and their families for their participation. The night would not have been possible without the huge range of guests who travelled from near and far. Thanks also to Lough Rynn for hosting the night, to those who performed on stage including the O’Neill School of Dancing, Shannon Healy, Bríd Sullivan and Rachel Mallon, and to the as ever incomparable Tommy Moran who filled the Eamon Andrew’s role with his usual aplomb. It was the third time in the last 5 years that Tommy has compered on our behalf – he is a true legend of both Leitrim and the GAA. To Martina Hackett and the Finance team who put so much effort into delivering a hugely professional night and finally to the sponsors of our raffle prizes for the halftime draw – winners were; Siobhan Mulligan, Lorraine Bohan, Mary Faughnan, John Campbell, Alison Mc Keon, Deirdre Faughnan, Gerry Kilraine, Aoide Mallon, Rachel Mallon and Ivy Body.
Dunnes Bar Division 2 – The Senior team got their competitive season underway on Saturday last when Dromahair were the visitors to Dromod. The North Leitrim men were in control for most of the game and led by four points at halftime. In the second half, Bornacoola cut the gap to just two points midway through, and it looked like a tight finish was in store. However, a series of unanswered points ensured it was the visitors who would leave with the win, and despite a late Damian Moran goal for the Bors, Dromahair were worthy 0-15 to 1-8 victors. Team on duty was Conor Hackett, Damian Mc Guinness, Jason Conroy, Brian Duffy, Mervyn Howard, Conor Mc Cauley (0-1), David Mulligan, Alan Croghan, Gary Mc Closkey, Cian Mallon, Sean Mc Keon (0-2), Kevin Mulligan, Robert O Beirne, Damian Moran (1-4) and Ronan Mulligan. Subs used were: Ollie Vaughan (0-1), Liam Mulligan and Kevin Shanley. This Saturday we play Annaduff in Dromod at 6.30pm in our second league game in Division 2.
Newtowngore Engineering Minors – Rinn Gaels finished the league off in style with a good 5-16 to 4-4 victory over Dromahair on Saturday last to qualify for the Minor semi-final which takes place this Saturday against Drumkeerin at 12noon – venue to be confirmed (see Leitrim GAA website)
Ladies Football – The Bornacoola/St Marys girls played their second match of the 2018 League season on Sunday morning last as they made the long early morning trip to take on a strong Dromahair second team in picturesque Glencar. Following a most competitive match which swayed from end to end, it was the home side which took the spoils of victory with three points to spare at full time. Final score: Dromahair 4-9 Bornacoola/St Mary’s 5-3. The girls are out again on Sunday morning next as they host Aughawillan in Dromod at 11am. On duty on Sunday morning last were Caroline Guckian, Jasmine Maye, Cora McCauley, Emily Reynolds, Hannah Reynolds, Lorraine Guckian, Enya Guckian, Kasey Bruen, Allison McKeon, Aisling Leahy, Sara Crowe, Rachel McGarry, Sarah Reynolds, Kelly Howard, Lisa Guckian, Hannah Bird, Ellen Woods and Tanya Boyle.

Sympathy – The sympathies of the Club are extended to the Mahon family, Aughnahanshun, on the passing of former Bornacoola player Michael in London last week. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.
Bornacoola Orcas – Four years ago, former Bornacoola Footballer Derek DiggerMan Duignan, set up the Bornacoola Orcas touch Rugby team in Evan’s Head in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales (Australia). We’re delighted to report that the Orca’s won their first Grand Final last week wearing the Black and Amber with pride in the final. Unfortunately, the DiggerMan himself was unable to take the field for the big day, as an earlier Rugby injury meant he had not played enough games to be eligible for the final. As they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same!! Well done to Derek and his team and we hope to see you back in Ireland soon.
First Aid – In conjunction with Leitrim Sports Partnership we plan to run a first aid course in Bornacoola clubhouse on this Saturday, 7th of April. There are a maximum of 10 places available. Please confirm if you are interested by contacting Suzanne Maguire on 087 3898205 or Trevor Howard on 087 8677206.
Barna Recycling U-13 League – Our U13 players continued their league campaign with Gortletteragh on Thursday evening as they faced Fenagh in an away fixture. On a miserable evening for football Fenagh threatened to run riot with a blistering start to the game, but the lads dug deep and fought hard to make it into a competitive game.
Team David Doyle, Luke McManus, Nathan Ryan, Jonathan Boyle, George Glaze, Tommy Reen, Noah McNulty, Matthew Davis, Adam Reen, Riaghan Ward, Ryan Fanning, Jack Reynolds, Jack Gannon, Oisin Maguire and Senan Woods.
This is Your Life – This Easter Saturday night in Lough Rynn we are holding our “This is your Life” evening. A great response to ticket sales so far so thank you to everyone who has purchased to date; there are still tickets remaining which can be purchased on the night for just €10. Compere for the occasion is the fantastic Tommy Moran. Cheese and wine reception, music and a raffle on the night should complete a great social occasion for the parish.
