County Champions It was another mighty day for the club on Sunday as we were crowned the Pyramid Book Makers Junior A Champions, 20 years after our last win in the competition it was highly enjoyable to sit in the stands with a number of players from that team and watch this young team with a few old heads be crowned County Champions. Special thanks as ever must go to the players, management team and of course their families who have helped the club claim this very important title. There was a large crowd in attendance at the game with young and old filling the stands hoping for a great game, and a great match we got.

The Ballinamore lads started the game well with Luke Murphy and Steven McTague knocking over a couple of points before Manor added one of their own. It was nip and tuck with Manor drawing level before Luke again with a free saw us regain the lead only for Manor to keep pegging us back. Steven Mctague scored another impressive point to take the lead with Mark McCrory adding another to leave Ballinamore winning by 2. Next up was Barry McGovern who scored an excellent goal followed by a Manor point two further frees from Luke and a great Ryan Gavin point to leave the scores Ballinamore 1:08 to 0:04 and in control. Manor were then awarded a penalty which was brilliantly saved by Dennis only for the referee to order a retake which was scored, this proved to be the final score of the half and we went in leading by 4.

Manor started the second half well scoring 5 points to our one free to level the match, what followed was an excellent save by Dennis to what looked like a certain goal before Mark McCrory scored a late free to put Ballinamore back in the lead and Ronan O’Rourke point claimed an excellent victory.

With the final whistle, all that was left was to celebrate a great victory, with the players congratulated on the pitch by young and old and followed up with a victory parade through the town.

Well done to Luke Murphy who was named the man of the match There are some excellent videos, pictures and comments on our Facebook page for any of you that may have missed it live if you want to take a look !!

Dunnes Bar ACL Division 2 Champions: A 21-year drought finally came to an end for Ballinaglera on Saturday when Padraig Cornyn lifted the Division 2 League Cup in Ballinamore Pairc Seán Uí Heislín. Many of the current group still remember the day in 1996 when the Glera men won their last title with just Colm Maguire still being on the panel today. Huge congratulations to the entire team who put in a tremendous 1st half display with some very fine scores to lead 0-08 to 0-02 at halftime. A ferocious wind in the second half meant Leitrim Gaels were always going to push the lads all the way with Glera’s Gerard Clarke scoring two vital scores in the 2nd half. The final score was Ballinaglera 0-10 Leitrim Gaels 0-09. Congratulations to James Wynne and his background team Joe Mc Morrow, Declan Mc Grail, Damian Mc Gourty, Enda Gilrane who have worked extremely hard with this team over the last 3 years. Thanks also to anyone else that helped out on the day of the final or throughout the year in any way from water boys, umpires, people who travelled with the team to Mullingar to train and Michael Cornyn for his coaching in Dublin, our first aider Verona. To all our sponsors who have supported us throughout the year we are very grateful. Thank you to the supporter that turned out in huge numbers on Saturday and all the year also. Commiserations to the Leitrim Gaels team who have had a tough few weeks in finals. However, they will have their day in the future no doubt. A few years ago, there was a lot of uncertainty about our numbers and the club’s future. However, a small panel of players represented and kept the club going during a very challenging period and it has now ended in us playing Division 1 football in 2018. For a small parish like Ballinaglera, this is a massive achievement. Team and scorers: Conor O Brien, Rory Mc Partland, Brendan Mc Gourty, Padraig Clarke, Patrick Mc Grail, Tomas Cornyn (0-01), Padraig Cornyn (0-01), Enda Maguire (0-02), Seamus Mc Govern (0-01), Seamie Mc Morrow (0-02), Luke Bradley, Gerard Clarke (0-02), Fergal Wynne, Barry Maguire, Wayne Reynolds (0-01), Colm Maguire, Anton Mc Gourty, Niall Mc Gourty, Ryan Crawford, Shane Mulvey, Barry Gilmartin, James Mc Dowell, Hugh Gilmartin, Oisin Mc Gourty, Gerard Mc Gourty, Ciaran Cornyn, John Crawford, Michael Crawford.

Get Well Wishes: We would like to wish a speedy recovery to Leitrim Gaels’ Noel Flynn who sustained an injury towards the end of the league final.

Dunnes Bar ACL Division 2 Final – Saturday was not our day, we played second fiddle to Ballinaglera who made advantage of the first half wind and left our Gaels with an uphill battle to fight back. Although some superb scoring from Colm Moreton, we lost by a point 0-10 to 0-09. We congratulate Ballinaglera and are looking forward to playing them in Division 1 next year. We wish James Flynn speedy recovery after he suffered a knock towards the end of the game. Newtowngore Engineering U-17’s: The lads lost out to Leitrim Gaels in the 13 aside championship final the weekend before last but they put in a great effort all summer. They were beaten by a physically stronger team but with the bulk of the squad underage for at least another year they will have better times ahead. We wish Aaron McCawley a speedy recovery after sustaining a serious injury in the semi-final which ruled him out of the decider. Well done to all the players and to Micky, Fergus & Noel.

Dunnes Bar ACL Div 1 Final

On Saturday evening in St Mary’s pitch Carrick on Shannon the Gaels took on County Champions, Mohill, in the Senior League Final. “Storm Brian” made good football difficult and nearly impossible. The Gaels played well and were ahead by two points at halftime. They could have been further ahead but scoring was very difficult. In the second half, Mohill got the vital scores that ensured they had a one-point win at the final whistle. The result was in doubt up to the end and the Gaels were unlucky. This group of young players have done the club proud in the League and championship this year and but for the long list of injuries, it could have been so different. Well done to all players and mentors.

50/50 Draw

Congratulations to Edel Foley, Kinlough who won €176 in last week’s 50/50   Draw. Get your ticket now for this week’s draw.

League success

On Saturday last in dreadful weather conditions, we won the Dunnes Bar ACL Div 1 title for the third year running. Melvin Gaels were our opposition and they were no walkover, but Mohill brought the cup home and that’s what matters in the end. Well done to management and panel who continue to train at home and further afield.  St Mary’s pitch was in great condition but driving rain and swirling wind made scoring difficult for both sides. We wish Oisín Madden a speedy recovery from the back injury he picked up early in the first half. Hopefully, Oisín will be back for our meeting with Castlebar Mitchels on November 3 in Castlebar in the Connacht Club Championship.
