Brendan Canning
The news of the sudden passing of Brendan Canning was a huge shock to the club and the community, as it became known last Thursday morning. Brendan had a deep involvement in a wide range of voluntary community activities for over 50 years ranging from the GAA to the credit union to amateur drama. In sporting terms, he would be described today as a teenage prodigy. Brendan played in goals for St. Francis as a 16-year-old for a historic Junior Championship success in 1963, a first for Drumshanbo. In 1965 he had the unique distinction of representing Leitrim at minor, U-21, junior and senior level in the same year while still in secondary school. He also won a Connacht Minor Hurling Championship medal with Leitrim at this time scoring 3 goals in the final. Indeed he joked that in the All Ireland Semi Final against Limerick which was a one-sided affair, he was marked by future All-Star & All Ireland Winner, Pat Hartigan, and the pair made a deal that late in the game Brendan would be given free passage to goal to put a gloss on the scoreline – It could only happen to Brendan! He represented Leitrim at senior level for a number of years & enjoyed further club success by winning a three in a row of Division 1 League Titles with Allen Gaels in 1973, 74 & ’75 and was part of that team which contested 6 league finals on the trot and lost a senior championship final in 1973 after a replay. He continued playing into the mid-1980’s and captained the club in the centenary year of 1984. Brendan was also a keen contributor to Scor and excelled in Question Time and was part of the legendary trips to England in 1985 to raise funds for the purchase of The Mayflower as a community centre. He served the club as team selector, referee, coach, Scor participant and he was a great man to pen a poem to celebrate a famous club victory or to contribute to match programmes. He was club secretary on a number of occasions and as recently as 2002 when the Club last won the senior championship and although Brendan would never have said it, he was hugely proud to see his son, Andy make the breakthrough to the senior team and collect a championship medal. One of Brendan’s greatest contributions to the club is often overlooked and that was the role he played in coaching & nurturing a young crop of players in the early 1980’s that would go on to enjoy great success at senior level in the years ahead. He was responsible for creating the ‘town league’ that brought on a generation of young players in that period. As a man, Brendan was fiercely loyal, utterly dependable and a straight talker – he wouldn’t always tell you what you wanted to hear but maybe it was what you needed to hear and there was always common sense & logic behind it. To those who knew him best it will be the quick wit and sense of fun that will be the abiding memory and we will miss those humorous exchanges most of all. The Club performed a guard of honour on Monday at his funeral and a minute’s silence was observed before the County Final on Sunday afternoon. The Club extends deepest condolences to Rosie, Trevor, Andrea, Trina & Andrew, to his brothers John and Mel and sister, Joan, as well as the McGowan, McKeon & Guckian Families, his extended family & a wide circle of friends. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

Intermediate
Sunday was simply not our day, we lost out to a far more deserving Aughnashellin side who were more hungrier to win from the start. We wish Aughnasheelin all the best in Connaught and in the senior championship next year. Well done to all the players and to Mal, Peter and Karl for giving us some terrific displays of football in the last few weeks and bringing every soul in the village and surrounding area together for joy and belief. Thanks to the supporters for coming out in great numbers. Of all four team on Sunday, it was evident that it was our Gaels who got the most behind our team and supported them. Our focus now turns to the under 17 final on Saturday and division 2 league final the following weekend, and we urge all our supporters out again to roar on the “ferocious” Gaels.

THE OSKARS
It was a very proud night for everyone involved with the club when we came together with the local community to present the OsKaRs to a full house in Landmark Central on Saturday night and celebrate in style at the after party in Club 360. After months and months of planning and very hard work, the event was flawless from start to finish and the standard of acting was tremendous. A massive well done to the committee, all our wonderful actors and actresses, the Judges and our superb MC on the night John Lynch.
A big Thank you to The Landmark Hotel and Kevin Rowe Events for ensuring that the event ran so smoothly and all our requests were met. Also thank you to Willie Donnellan, Leitrim Observer who was there with his camera to capture everyone arriving on the red carpet.
Thanks to all our sponsors, your generosity means so much to us, a full list will follow next week. None of this would have been possible without you the local people who bought tickets, dressed up and came out to support St. Mary’s on what can only be described as a truly enjoyable night, one we will talk about and remember with pride forever.
The following were lucky enough to win the much coveted OsKars:

Strictly Come Dancing
What an excellent night at Priors Ballinamore as the club introduced our dancers to a packed crowd, with even more following the action live on Facebook. There was plenty of cheering and laughter as the ever-excellent Adrian Smyth introduced the couples first to each other and then to the massed audience.
If the launch night was anything to go by the main event which is in the Slieve Russell on the 18th of November is one not to be missed.
Next up for our dancers will be a gruelling training regime where they will be put through their paces by a crack team of choreographers in preparation for the main event
Over the coming weeks, we will introduce you to our intrepid couples through our Facebook page where we will share lots of titbits on our dancers and provide further information on each of their individual sponsors.
If you’re not one of the 2150 people that have so far viewed the launch video it’s still available on our page.
Special thanks to our main sponsors Priors and Gordon Hughes estate agents for their support so far and helping to make this possible

A big thank you to our u13 mentors who brought the team up to the Aviva to see Ireland in action on Friday evening, by all accounts the young lads had a fantastic time, watching the match, being interviewed before and meeting Steven Cluxton after the game. Under 17 Semi Final
The U-17 semi-final played against Kinlough in St Osnatts GAA pitch outside Manorhamilton. Played in perfect conditions on Saturday at 4pm.
SOH won the fixture on a score line of 3-9 to 2-7. It was a close game throughout with SOH having the majority of the play in both halves. We were unlucky not to convert two goal chances in the first half but held a slender lead at half time. We took our opportunities in the second with a goal from a penalty and two from play. Some great points scored also over the course of the game both from frees and play.
Although we were fairly comfortable coming towards the end of the game things got a bit scrappy. We held our nerve and now move on to the final against Fenagh. No date fixed yet for this match. Team starting Jack Gallogley, Danny Smyth, Nathan McCartin, Eoin Curran, Eoin Shanley, Francis McGovern, James Creamer, Mathew Morris, Cathal McHugh, Dylan Beirne, Senan Harte, James Honeyman, Joe Sweeney, Tom Prior, Dara Gleason. Subs used Aaron McBrien, Sean Christy.
The final has been set for October the 15th where the lads will take on Fenagh at 16:00 in Pairc Sean
