New –  was certainly the theme for last Sundays FBD league at Advantcard Pairc Sean MacDiarmada on Sunday last. We had a new season, a new format for the FBD League, new rules, a new Mayo Management team, a new Leitrim manager and a new management team, a new Leitrim Sponsor, and Leitrim sporting their New Jerseys. Well if new was the theme beforehand, extraordinary was the word on every body’s lips afterwards as Leitrim turned in a massive performance to draw level with a vastly experienced Mayo team. To cap matters off it became a historic occasion when we had for the first time a game in a recognised competition finished on penalties. What a day to remember. Sean Kiernan Memorial Cup – The Sean Kiernan Memorial Cup match took place on St Stephen’s Day at 2pm with the club’s over 25s taking on the under 25s. This was a very competitive game with the over’s using their experience to see out a tense final ten minutes under severe pressure from their youthful opponents. Ultimately, it was the two early goals scored by the over’s that proved crucial, the scoreline at the end reading 2-10 to 1-07 in favour of the overs.  It was great to see so many players sporting the green and white attire, whether it being young lads promoted to adult level, old lads coming out of retirement or players of young and old returning home to Aughavas from near and far. A special mention is reserved for Frankie Gallogly’s son Shane who showed flashes of flair and strength from corner forward. Keep the phone on Shane, with the January transfer market approaching; we could be in contact again soon.  The man in the middle on the day was Gerry Gallogly who did a great job in letting the game flow and paid no attention to the groans and moans coming from the sidelines. David Charles, Corrernary, received the Man of the Match award while Bridie Mollohan presented captain of the over 25s Peter McBrien with the Sean Kiernan Memorial Cup. Another title to add to your collection Peter. A sincere thank you is expressed to all that supported and helped out in any way or form on the day.  The charity to benefit from this fundraiser will be decided at the next club meeting.
