Clubs are asked to advise those attending the Foundation Award Course on Monday night (8/4/13) and the Child Welfare and Protection Course on Wednesday (10/4/13) that they will now take place in Drumshanbo Vocational School and not the Allen Gaels GAA Centre as previously advised.

Coach Education

The following are the dates for our coach education and child welfare & protection courses for spring 2013. Coaches should try to attend at the courses allocated to their club but may attend at any of the other venues if their allocated date is not suitable. All coaches are asked to please register for the courses on the google doc sent to your club secretary.

Please note that participants on all courses must complete all sessions to achieve qualification. If a coach has to miss all or part of a session they will be required to attend that section at one of the other courses.

Foundation award 

Annaduff – March 8th – registration @ 6.45pm. March 9th @ 10am ( coaches from following clubs, Annaduff, Bornacoola, Gortletteragh & Mohill)

St. Clares Comprehensive school Manorhamilton – March 11th – registration @ 6.45pm. March 13th @ 7pm ( coaches from following clubs, GlencarManorhamilton, Melvin Gaels, Dromahair & Glenfarne)

Allen Gaels GAA Centre – April 8th – registration @ 6.45pm. April 15th @ 7pm ( coaches from following clubs, Allen Gaels, St. Mary’s, Leitrim Gaels, Drumkeerin & Kiltubrid)

Child Welfare & Protection

March 15th – Ballinamore ( please note course date changed from Thursday 14th to Friday 15th)

March 20th – Manorhamilton

March 25th – Ck-on-Shannon

April 10th – Allen Gaels GAA centre

Award 1 Child & Award 1 Youth/Adult

May 15th, 22nd, 29th,

June 5th, 12th & 19th

The running of the award 1 courses will depend on numbers registered.

Kellogg’s GAA Cul camps

Leitrim GAA wish to recruit a number of suitably qualified personnel to work as coaches on our Kelloggs GAA Cul camps during the month of July. 

Candidates must be over 18, have attained a minimum of Foundation award coaching qualification, have completed the GAA or Irish Sports Council child welfare & protection course and be Garda vetted to be eligible for consideration.

Kellogg’s GAA Cúl camps

Kellogg’s are the new National sponser for the GAA Cúl camps. Currently in the shops are promotional packs of Kelloggs Cornflakes and Rice Krispies containing a special code which if used when registering on line will give a €5 reduction. Leitrim GAA coaching and games will operate 12 regional camps during the month of July. All children attending will receive a full camp kit including bag. On line booking has commenced, see Leitrim GAA or National GAA website for details, and written application forms have been distributed.

This year the cost of attending our camps has been reduced and are as follows, 1st child €55, 2nd child €45, with all additional brothers or sisters only €40. This reduction along with the Kellogg’s promotion make our camps really great value.

Kellogg’s GAA Cúl camps Free Places competition

Look out in next weeks edition of the Leitrim Observer for the start of this years free places competition. One free place each week for the next four weeks, so get your copy of the Leitrim Observer, answer the simple question and you could be the lucky winner of one of the free places on this year’s Kellogg’s GAA Cúl camps.

Under 8 & 10 Blitz

The next round of blitz will take place on Saturday next, June 2nd. The following are the groupings.

St. Mary’s & Annaduff, Glencar Manor & Drumkeerin, Carrigallen & Leitrim Gaels, Melvin Gaels & Dromahair, Allen Gaels & Fenagh St. Caillins, Aughavas & Cloone, Ballinamore SOH & Kiltubrid, Bornacoola & Aughnasheelin, Garadice Gaels & Gortletteragh & Mohill, Glenfarne & St. Osnats.

Club mentors should make contact with each other if for some reason they are unable to attend on Saturday morning. All clubs please note that if you intend organising blitz games other than those organised by Coiste na nÓg, you now need to apply to the CCC for approval for same.

Camoige training

Training continues on Monday evenings at 7.30pm in the Carriock community school pitch in preperation for feile 2012. This year Feile takes place in Dublin on the 5th,6th & 7th of July. Girls need to be over 10 yrs and under 14 to participate in Feile. This is a great opportunity for girls to experience camogie in the County and we would ask any girls interested to contact Yvonne Beirne on 087-6235855 or Miream Cunniffe on 086-1693563 for more details.

Under 14 Development Squad

The squad play Longford in Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada on Saturday next in a double game. The first game will commence at 11am with the second game at 12.15. Players will be contacted with details of which game they will be playing in.

Connacht Vocational Schools A final

For the second year in a row the Leitrim senior Vocational schools team have reached the Connacht A final. On Friday last they beat last year’s winners Galway in the semi-final and play Mayo in the final on Friday next at 2pm in the new GAA centre of excellence, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo. All support would be very welcome and we wish players and management the best of luck.

Connacht GAA Bursary awards

31 Bursaries have been awarded to promising young Connacht GAA players in the province’s annual bursary scheme. Each of the five Connacht counties is represented in the initiative which provides financial assistance to students who have displayed potential and commitment on the gaelic games front in their respective colleges.Congrats to three young Leitrim GAA players, Micheal Ferguson, Glenfarne GAA club, Shane Quinn, Mohill GAA club and Shane Sweeney, Manorhamilton GAA club who were presented with their awards at the cermony in Claremorris on Saturday last.

Coaching & Child Protection Standards

Leitrim Coaching & Games committee are asking all clubs to ensure that all coaches appointed at their AGM’s have a minimum of foundation level qualification, complete the child welfare & protection course and be Garda vetted before they start coaching. To assist clubs in complying with this request the following courses are taking place.

Foundation award dates

February 2012 ‘ Drumkeerin on Monday 6th & Tuesday 7th

Clubs are asked to book places for this course by Wednesday evening, 01st at the latest.

Child Welfare & Protection course

February 2012 ‘ Bush Hotel on Friday 03rd

February 2012 ‘ Drumkeerin on Wednesday 15th

As we have a large number of applications for the course on Friday 3rd February, we will run two courses on the night which will allow us accomadate more coaches.

Booking for both these courses is essential as places will be limited.

Garda Vetting

Club officers should ensure that all coaches coaching in their club have completed Garda vetting and have a copy on file of the coaches approval letter from Croke Park. Application forms for Garda vetting will be made available at all upcoming foundation award and award 1 courses. For existing qualified coaches who have yet to complete the vetting application, contact your club coaching officer, County coaching officer or download from gaa.ie.

Completed application forms must be returned to Thomas Keenan, Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada, Ck-on-Shannon and not to Croke Park or the Garda vetting unit.

Award 1 Coaching course

For those coaches who have completed the foundation award and wish to progress up the coaching ladder we will be conducting an Award 1 course for all three strands, Child, Youth and Adult in March 2012. For the practical modules of the award 1 course we will visit the coaches and conduct the sessions with the coach while he/she is coaching their club team. Details will be confirmed when courses commence.

Now that the on field activities have all concluded our focus turns to coach education programmes for the next few months. We will be asking all clubs to ensure that all coaches appointed at their AGM’s have a minimum of foundation level qualification, complete the child welfare & protection course and be Garda vetted before they start coaching. These are the minimum standards that all clubs should be insisting on and to help clubs and coaches comply, we will be running the following courses.

National Coaching Conference
The GAA National coaching conference will take place in Croke Park on Saturday January 14th 2012. Application forms are now available on line and we would encourage as many coaches as possible to attend. All club coaching officers should attend if available. The cost of registeration is €50 per person which includes conference pack. Please note that only a limited number of places are still available for this conference.
