Leitrim 2-11 Offaly 1-14

Leitrim’s Under 16 footballers concluded their Gerry Reilly Tournament campaign with another draw today following an entertaining and most competitive encounter with Offaly, played in Ferbane earlier this afternoon. They had also drawn with Louth on Saturday last in Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada on Saturday last.

The Leitrim lads settled into the match from an early stage and dominated the first half with some fine points from Barry McWeeney, Senan Harte, Cian Singleton, Jack Hughes and Conor Hackett, in addition to two well-executed goals finished to the net by Hackett and Shane Mallon. Tigerish defending kept the Offaly lads at bay and at the changeover the Leitrim boys held a 2-7 to 0-5 advantage.

In the proverbial game of two halves, it was the home side which enjoyed the better of the exchanges with some fine score-taking to claw back the lead and once they goaled at the midway point of the half they seemed to have taken a decisive hold on the game. However, the Leitrim lads got back into the groove and as the last quarter moved from end to end, they twice levelled matters to earn a share of the spoils with second-half scores coming from the boot of  Barry McWeeney (4) and the final equalising score from Conor Hackett.

Well done to these young lads in what was Leitrim’s first foray into this Leinster GAA organised tournament which is played in memory of Oldcastle youngster Gerry Reilly. The lads will play in the Tedd Webb Cup later in the month and the Fr. Manning Cup Competition in October.

Leitrim 2-14 Louth 1-17

Leitrim’s Under 16 Football Academy took on Louth at Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada earlier this afternoon in the second round of the Gerry Reilly Under 16 Tournament and the match finished level after an excellent encounter between two committed teams. Having played with the aid of the breeze in the first half, our lads entered the halftime two points to the good on a scoreline of 1-5 to 0-6 after an industrious half hour‘s play.
With the aid of a stiffening breeze in the second half the Louth team upped the ante and led by the three-quarter stage but the Leitrim lads never let them out of reach. While it looked like the visitors would be the more likely winners with ten to play, these young Leitrim lads dug in deep and rallied with a goal and two points in the closing stages to rescue a draw.
Well done lads, on the excellence of your efforts over the hour and we look forward to a Round 3 encounter with Offaly next Saturday.

As the two year term of the outgoing Senior Team Management has come to an end, following exit from the Championship earlier this month with the AIFQ Qualifier defeat to Monaghan, Leitrim GAA has decided to open up the process in looking towards the 2019 season. This decision had been intended to be inclusive of the outgoing management if they so decided to remain involved. Outgoing Team Manager Brendan Guckian has informed Leitrim GAA that he is not putting his name forward for consideration in this process.

Leitrim GAA would like to thank Brendan Guckian, Seamus Quinn, John O Mahony, Michael Moyles and their extended management backroom team for their selfless dedication and energy towards the cause of Leitrim GAA over the past two seasons. These people have all dedicated numerous hours and sacrificed much of their spare time in an effort to improve an evolving squad. Over this period they have presided over the introduction of a large number of young players to inter-county action, players who have made steady positive progress, as Leitrim Senior Team reached AIFQ Round 3 for the first time recently and in doing so were the last remaining Division 4 team to exit the championship, having reached the last 16. We thank this outgoing management team for their most valued contribution over the last two seasons in facilitating this progress, which included victories over London in 2017 and New York last May in the Connacht SFC and an AIFQ Rd 2 victory over Louth last month.

A committee has been put in place to preside over the next steps as we look towards finalising a management team for 2019, and clubs have been invited, as part of this process, to submit team management nominees, conditional on having sought a nominee’s permission.

The Leitrim Under 16 Football Academy has been granted a place in the prestigious 2018 Gerry O Reilly Tournament. This is a great opportunity for these young players to test themselves against Leinster opposition. The upcoming fixtures are as follows:

Round 1 Saturday 21st July 12noon at Oldcastle

Round 2 Saturday 28th July 12 noon at Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada

“The No. 1 train from the city is not running all the way up to 242nd street. No train from 137th to 242nd. They will have shuttle buses. Maybe you can put it on your website for the supporters that are traveling out. Maybe best they use Uber or allow more time to get to the game if they plan on taking the train.”
