Leitrim GAA wishes to express its sympathies to the family of the late Brendan Gormley, Fohera, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim, on his sad passing after a long illness on Monday, January 20th.

Brendan was to the forefront in the promotion of GAA activities in his native Ballinamore and in particular the promotion of Scór in his club throughout the 1980’s. Indeed the club has claimed many Scór honours at county, provincial and national levels. In addition to holding the position of Treasurer of Scór Liatroma, he went on to become Treasurer of Coiste Chontae Liatroma in 1985 and held the position for an unprecedented seventeen consecutive years until 2001. Brendan also served a term as Treasurer of Connacht Council GAA from 1979 to 1982.

Brendan worked tirelessly for Leitrim GAA over his period involved with the County Management Committee and Coiste Chontae Liatroma and would have taken tremendous pride in being associated with Leitrim’s on-field achievements of a quarter-century ago and beyond.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.

Our sincere sympathy is extended to Brendan’s wife Rosario, sons Niall and Aaron, daughter Sinead, daughters-in-law Breege (McGovern) & Fiona (Butterly), his dear grandchildren Mya, Romy, Grace, Darragh & Meabh, his sisters Mary (Cavan), Rose Murphy (Carrick-on-Shannon), Agnes Duncan (Kilcock), Margaret Walpole (Mohill), brothers Joe (Cavan), Noel (Dublin) & Donal (Drumree, Co. Meath), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.

His remains will be reposing at Smith’s Funeral Home, High St, Ballinamore on Wednesday, January 22 from 5pm,  concluding with prayers at 8pm.

House private at all times, please.

Funeral Mass in St. Patrick’s Church, Ballinamore on Thursday at 12 noon followed by burial in Oughteragh Cemetery, Ballinamore. Family flowers only, please. Donations in lieu to the North West Hospice, c/o Smiths Funeral Directors, Ballinamore.

Renowned piper Néillidh Mulligan and family to regale audience at Leitrim Supporters Club launch in Croke Park.

Excitement is building ahead of the annual launch of the Leitrim Supporters Club in Croke Park on Thursday, January 16th.

The gathering touches on all things Leitrim, and MC Colin Regan will interview the county’s new hurling All-Star James Clancy to find out what the Lory Meagher Cup win meant to this stalwart. Senior football manager Terry Hyland will be quizzed about plans for 2020 as the county prepares for an incredibly competitive Division 3 national football league, while Eamonn Duignan, chair of the Leitrim Wall committee, will reflect on what became a success story of national interest.

The assembled crowd will also be treated to interviews with special guest Sean McGoldrick, sports journalist, author, and native of Newtownmanor, and Leitrim Person of the Year, Noel McPartland, of Drumshanbo.

The finale of the evening will be a lively music session with renowned uileann piper Neilidh Mulligan and family. Neilidh has a strong Leitrim connection – his father Tom being a native of Bornacoola and a founding member of St Mary’s Music Club in Church Street, Dublin. Neil has been a tutor at the Joe Mooney Summer School for years and represented Bornacoola in Scór in the late 1970s. They will include tunes from his award winning ‘The Leitrim Thrush’ album.

This annual gathering has become a must-attend event for Leitrim people in Dublin and the surrounding counties, with 170 attendees last year. It makes a point of acknowledging and celebrating the lives and times of Leitrim’s foremost citizens and entertainers and is sure to have something to amuse anyone with roots or an interest in the county. So, please spread the word to your friends and come along on the night.

Doors open at 7pm with the event getting under way 7.30pm sharp. Light refreshments will be served. There is no charge for entry but attendees are encouraged to buy a Supporters Club ticket on the night and a special draw will take place for those who purchase one or take a booklet to sell. The night will conclude at 9.30pm.

Irish conversation classes, or Ciorcal Comhrá, will start again in Ballinamore Library on Tuesday, 7 January 2020 at 8.00pm. There are separate groups for relative beginners, for those who have some Irish and for those who are fluent. These classes are a great opportunity to practice the Irish you know and to improve it. Also, Leaving Cert or transitional year students will find it useful for practice for their Irish orals. Classes are free and will run for 10 weeks to mid March. Seo seans chun an Ghaeilge a labhairt. Beidh fáilte romhat.

Leitrim GAA would like to take this opportunity to send Season’s Greetings to all its clubs, players, management teams, coaches, officials, sponsors, supporters and all your families. 2019 was a great year for the county on and off the field and we thank everybody for your assistance and contribution to this effort.

RÚIN 2019

Motion 1

That Comhdháil Bhliantúil requests the Ard Chomhairle to appoint, as a matter of urgency, a committee to consider the implementation of a TMO (Television Match Official) using existing TV coverage only. This committee decides on which situations the TMO should be used (eg in relation to scores only, or other matters).

This committee produces recommendations in regard to future use of this technology and also examines any rule changes that may be required, depending on the situations where TMO use is recommended.

Ballinamore Sean O Heslin’s

Motion 2

That clarification is provided through Páirc an Chrócaigh in situations where play is called back to view Hawk-eye. Confirming that all play is null and void and are all scores, yellow, black and red cards are rescinded which occur in the intervening period?

Ballinamore Sean O Heslin’s

Motion 3

Aughnasheelin GAA Club would like to propose the motion that if a team at Senior, Intermediate or Junior level are unable to field a team of 15 players for a match then the playing number could be reduced to 13 aside and still be a valid match. This would apply to league competitions.
