2020 Leitrim GAA Convention Motions and Nominations

There are only three motions to be debated at next Sunday’s Leitrim GAA Convention. Convention will take place in the Bush Hotel commencing at 3pm. The motions are as follows:

RÚIN 2019

Motion 1

That Comhdháil Bhliantúil requests the Ard Chomhairle to appoint, as a matter of urgency, a committee to consider the implementation of a TMO (Television Match Official) using existing TV coverage only. This committee decides on which situations the TMO should be used (eg in relation to scores only, or other matters).

This committee produces recommendations in regard to future use of this technology and also examines any rule changes that may be required, depending on the situations where TMO use is recommended.

That clarification is provided through Páirc an Chrócaigh in situations where play is called back to view Hawk-eye. Confirming that all play is null and void and are all scores, yellow, black and red cards are rescinded which occur in the intervening period?

Aughnasheelin GAA Club would like to propose the motion that if a team at Senior, Intermediate or Junior level are unable to field a team of 15 players for a match then the playing number could be reduced to 13 aside and still be a valid match. This would apply to league competitions.

The late Maureen Tiernan (née Crawford), Cloone Village, Co. Leitrim,

Leitrim GAA expresses its deepest sympathies to our Central Council delegate Enda Tiernan, his brother Shane and the extended Tiernan and Crawford Families, on the death of their mother, Maureen Tiernan, Cloone. Co Leitrim.

Maureen, who has been predeceased by her husband Séan and infant son Mel, is deeply regretted by and sadly missed by her loving sons; Shane and Enda, her brothers; George and Tom, daughter-in-law; Raquel, Enda’s partner Sheila, sister-in-law; Margaret, grandsons; Séan and Conor, nephews; Kenneth and Thomas, niece; Caroline, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends.

Funeral Arrangements

Remains reposing at Lough Erril Private Nursing Home, Mohill (N41 XE39) on Monday (9th December) from 3.00pm – 5.45pm followed by prayers. Removal to arrive at St. Mary’s Church, Cloone for 7.00pm. Funeral mass on Tuesday at 12 noon followed by burial to Cloone new cemetery.

Ireland Lights Up 2020

Before the year ends, we would like to highlight the popular ‘Ireland Lights Up’ walking initiative returns in January 2020 in partnership with the GAA, Operation Transformation, and Get Ireland Walking.

In a bid to walk off the turkey and make exercise more accessible on the darker nights, clubs across the 32 counties are once more encouraged to turn on their floodlights and host community walking groups during the broadcast period of the hit RTÉ show.

Registration for clubs is now open: www.getirelandwalking.ie/GAA/

Over 270 clubs participated in Ireland Lights Up in 2019, with a total of 65,000 walkers getting out during the initiative.

The first date for clubs to host ‘Ireland Lights Up’ 2020 is Thursday, January 9th, but this year clubs are free to host their walking groups any, and as many, nights of the week as they want.

20 November 2019; Launch of Ireland Lights Up with the GAA in partnership with RTɒs Operation Transformation and Get Ireland Walking. In a bid to make exercise more accessible on the dark winter nights, ‘Ireland Lights Up’ will see participating clubs turn on their floodlights/lighting for a six-week period (January 8th – February 26th, 2019) as Operation Transformation returns to our screens in the New Year. The late Bernie Hamilton, Drumoughty, Gorvagh, Co. Leitrim.

Leitrim GAA wishes to convey its sympathies to the family of the late Bernie Hamilton, Drumoughty, Gorvagh, Co. Leitrim whose funeral took place today Sunday 24th November.
Bernie worked as part of a FÁS Community Employment programme at Avantcard Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada from 2007 through to 2015. He was well known as a valued multiskilled worker around our GAA Headquarters in Carrick on Shannon. A very obliging and flexible part of the grounds team in Pairc Sean, Bernie gave of his time in addition to his normal hours to assist with stewarding and other duties on match days. Predeceased by his parents John and Ellen, brothers Vincent and Thomas-Martin. Sadly missed by his daughters Belinda and Anita (Keaney), son Alan, son-in-law Iain, grandchildren Saidhbh and Fiadh, partner Ann, brothers John, Michael and Edward, sister Annie-Mai, brother-in-law Josie, sister-in-law Dympna, relatives, neighbours and friends. His funeral mass took place in St Patrick’s Church in his native Ballyfarnon followed by interment in Kilmacktranny Cemetery.
May he rest in peace.

The late Frank Mulvey, Williamstown, Kells and Ballinaglera, Co. Leitrim.

Leitrim GAA wishes to convey its deepest sympathies to the family of the late Frank Mulvey, Williamstown, Kells, Co Meath and formerly of Ballinaglera, Co. Leitrim. Frank was a former inter-county Leitrim Senior Footballer and Hurler of the 1970s and indeed a former officer of Leitrim GAA serving as Assistant Secretary for a number of years during the 1980s. Frank’s brother John is a former Treasurer of Leitrim GAA and is currently a Leitrim GAA delegate to Connacht GAA Council.

Frank is predeceased by his parents Artie and Maura, and brother Brendan. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Fiona, children Arthur, Blaire and Richard, brothers; John, Tony, Vincent and Kevin and sister Mary-Frances, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, and his extended family.

Funeral Arrangements
Reposing at his home (A82 Y9N6) Wednesday 25th September from 3pm until 9pm. Removal on Thursday morning 26th September, arriving at St. Colmcille’s Church, Kells for 11am Funeral Mass. Removal afterwards to Ballinaglera Church, Co. Leitrim, arriving for prayers at 3.30pm approx, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Kiltubrid Pipe Band Celebrates 70 Years Young

Kiltubrid Pipe Band has reached a milestone in its existence by reaching its 7oth birthday this year and this weekend the official celebration of having reached this mark will take place in the Lough Allen Hotel, Drumshanbo, on Saturday night, September 21st, at 8pm. Family and friends of the band members, past and present, are invited to attend the function which Raheen Pipeband and Longford Pipeband will attend. Music will be by Camillus Kehoe and WEE 3 and there will also be food and refreshments.

Formed in 1949, Kiltubrid Pipe Band has been associated with many significant events across the region over the past seven decades, but particularly in the case of Leitrim GAA, the band has been the one permanent fixture associated with County Finals Day. It was significant and a telling factor of the respect in which the band is held in its association with County Final fare that a player in very recent times when asked for his greatest sporting memory for match programme pen pics listed “Marching behind the Kiltubrid Pipe Band” on the occasion of his first County SFC Final appearance!

Enjoy the celebrations around Kiltubrid, they are richly deserved.

Leitrim GAA Sponsors Recently Bereaved

Leitrim GAA wishes to convey its sincerest sympathies to two separate families which have been associated with sponsorship of our activities and have suffered recent bereavements.

To the Dolan family of the Bush Hotel, Ck-on-Shannon, long-time and recent main sponsor of Leitrim GAA we extend our sympathies on the death of Martin Dolan, formerly of Cortober, Ck-on-Shannon, who died on June 25th in China. Martin’s Funeral Mass took place today, July 27th at 12 noon in St. Michael’s Church, Drumlion, Carrick-on-Shannon followed by burial of Ashes in Ardcarne Cemetery.

Heartfelt sympathies to his wife Irina, daughter Naomi, brothers Jim, Joe & David, sister Marion, extended family and friends.

To the McCartin Family, Newtowngore, we extend our sympathies on the death of Ann McCartin on July 26th. Her son John, Newtowngore Engineering, is the sponsor of the Leitrim Under 17 Competitions over the past two seasons. Anne will be missed by her husband Joe, son John, daughter-in-law Edel, grandchildren Olwyn, Eábha, Doireann, John and Tiernan, her sister Marie McCartin, brother Eamon, brother-in-law Tommy, sister-in-law May, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and many friends.

The Late Fr. Joe Dolan, St. Columban’s, Dalgan Park, Navan and late of Aughnasheelin, Co. Leitrim

Leitrim GAA wishes to pass on its sympathies to the family of the late Fr Joe Dolan, St. Columban’s, Dalgan Park, Navan and late of Aughnasheelin, Co. Leitrim, who passed to his eternal reward on Sunday 7th July 2019. Joe was former Leitrim footballer and played with Leitrim in the Connacht Championship of 1959, one of the many years of that era that Leitrim reached the Connacht Championship Final. 1994 Heroes honoured at Connacht Football Final

At yesterday’s 2019 Connacht Senior Football Championship Final, the guests of honour were the members of the 1994 Leitrim Senior Football Panel, management team and back-room staff. Connacht GAA Council were honouring them on the Silver Jubilee occasion of that historic victory over Mayo which occurred on July 24th, 1994, a day which brought such joy to all Leitrim people at home and abroad. The players and management were introduced to the crowd between the two matches at Salthill, and were later feted at a function at the Galway Bay Hotel, where they were introduced by County Secretary of the time, Tommy Moran, and presented with crystal momentoes to commemorate the historic landmark of landing Leitrim’s second Connacht Championship and bridging a gap of 67 years back to the only other Senior Championship success of 1927.

Jason Ward, a member of that panel, was unavoidably absent on Sunday but had met with the players on Saturday night, and Colin McGlynn was on holidays in the USA.

On Sunday, journalist Tommy Conlon, a native of Ballinamore and brother of team member Liam Conlon, wrote a fine piece in the day’s Sunday Independent, which captured the essence of the achievement that was 1994. You can read the article here

The Late Oliver Casserly, Ballgawley, Co Sligo and formerly Bornacoola, Co Leitrim.

Leitrim GAA wishes to convey its sincere sympathies to the family of the late Oliver Casserly, Ballgawley, Co Sligo and formerly Bornacoola, Co Leitrim, who passed to his eternal reward on Thursday last, following a short illness. Oliver was a great Leitrim supporter over the years and was a staunch member of the Sligo Branch of the Leitrim GAA Supporters Club. He worked extremely hard in his promotion of all Leitrim GAA fundraising in the greater Sligo area and indeed beyond over many years and shared and enjoyed in our greatest days in the 1990’s and indeed the Connacht Championship win of 1994 was a great source of pride for Oliver in his adopted county. It is particularly poignant that on the very day that the Leitrim heroes of 1994 will be honoured at the Connacht SFC Final 25th Anniversary, Oliver will be laid to rest in Sligo.

We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Noeleen, children Sarah, Emma, Colm and Jane, and his thirteen grandchildren, sons-in-law Ciaran, Conor and Kevin and daughter-in-law Noreen, sisters-in-law Mary, Joan and Patricia (RIP) and brothers-in-law Gerard, Joseph (RIP) and Nicholas (RIP), neighbours, relatives and friends.

Remains reposing at his family home on Saturday, 15th June, 4-9 pm. Funeral Mass on Sunday, 16th June, at 4pm in The Church of the Assumption, Sooey, with burial afterwards in Sooey Cemetery. House private on Sunday morning.
