2019 Glory for St Mary’s Kiltoghert at Scor na nÓg Finals

Saturday last was a memorable occasion for Leitrim Scór as St Marys Kiltoghert were declared All Ireland champions in Ballad Group at the All-Ireland final in Castlebar.

For the Carrick club, it was a long-awaited and richly-deserved reward for perseverance and persistence. For each of the previous four consecutive years they had reached the All-Ireland finals, they travelled to Killarney, Sligo and Belfast with great hopes, only to come home disappointed on each occasion. Others would have given up but sheer determination from the Carrick ladies and their backroom team didn’t deter. Hope kept them going and the dream that their day would come and come it finally did on Saturday last.

With the club having competed and come so close over the last 10 years in both Senior and Junior All-Irelands before them, The young singers hung on their mentors and tutors every piece of advice and it surely paid off. The team of Elsie Harmon, Eleanor Smith, Rionach Nic Conmara, Roisin Noone and Ava Brogan gave a moving and outstanding performance which saw them see off Ardagh of Longford. Watty Grahams, Derry and Cullen of Cork. The long wait was finally over.

The sight of bonfires blazing on the approach to Pairc Tom and the grounds of St Marys clubhouse at 10.00pm last Saturday and the club lining the way to the den to greet them back made it all worth it. It was a memorable homecoming as the ladies performed at ease & celebrated their historic win with their friends and supporters.

St Mary’s win was the second title to the club since their first and only win in 1971 when Tom Fitzgerald won recitation in what was the 2nd year of Scór competition. To win this All-Ireland on the 50th year of the competition, it was a very long wait. It was also something memorable for Leitrim as this was the first time ever that a Leitrim club had ever won an All-Ireland Ballad title in Scór na nÓg. With previous titles in Nuachleas (now Leiriu) Sèan O’Heslins in 1997, 2001 & 2006) question time (Sean O’Heslins in 1988 & 1991, Bornacoola  2001) and Instrumental Music (Carrigallen 1989) at Junior level.

Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins represented Leitrim at the All-Ireland quiz last Saturday also. The young team put a massive effort into preparing for the day & did impressively well as the Questions were quite tough. Its such a great experience for such a young team.

Leitrim senior scór quiz takes place this Friday 22nd February in St Joseph’s Centre Leitrim Village. The venue is next door to the village church. Competition starts at 8.30pm. Clubs are encouraged to take part. Each entry must consist of 4 club members, aged from 17, effective 1st January 2019. Leitrim winners qualify for the All Ireland final on April 13th in Castlebar.

The late John Morrison, Armagh, and Former Leitrim Joint Manager

Leitrim GAA wishes to be associated with the many tributes that have been paid to the late John Morrison, who passed away earlier today. The Armagh native and Armagh Harps GAA stalwart was one of the most innovative GAA coaches this island has provided witness to and we were privileged to have had him in our midst a decade ago.

In the summer of 2008 Leitrim was in the hunt for a new Senior Football Management team, following the retirement of Des Dolan from the position, and we were delighted to attract the joint managerial expertise of Mickey Moran and John Morrison to the position. Following the announcement of the appointment to the job in August 2008, they quickly set about putting their stamp on the work at hand in order to be prepared for the 2009 season and no stone was left unturned. A larger than life character, John Morrison, with his innovative methods and many futuristic coaching ideas, left a lasting impression on all of the players who were fortunate to have played for Leitrim at that time, not only at Senior level but his influence spread to underage teams of that era.

John remained in this role over the 2009 and 2010 seasons but decided to concentrate on his coach education career and stepped down before the 2011 season. Mickey Moran continued in the role until he had to step away for health reasons at the end of 2011.

John has retained a great interest and connection with Leitrim GAA Coaching and Games and was back in the Annaduff COE as recently as November 2017 when he delivered his ‘Game Sense’ Workshop to a full contingent of Leitrim GAA Coaches. Indeed a number of former Leitrim players of his era in charge who have since entered coaching have hailed the huge influence that John Morrison had on their decision to coach.

Leitrim GAA players and coaches will forever retain fond memories of John Morrison and his varied but nonetheless challenging methods which were always to the fore in advancing the player technically, mentally and physically. We convey our condolences to his family and would like to think that we would be numbered among his many, many friends across the GAA world.

The late Tom Guckian, Kiltoghert, Ck-on-Shannon and St. Mary’s Kiltoghert GAA Club.

Leitrim GAA is greatly saddened at the sudden passing of Tom Guckian, Kiltoghert, Ck-on-Shannon, who passed to his eternal reward early on Friday morning. Tom, a retired staff member of ESB, was battling with ailing health over the past couple of years but met all these challenges determinedly and refused to give in, always airing with great positivity. An avid GAA follower of all codes, Tom made it to TEG Cusack Park, Mullingar, on Sunday week last to support the Carrick Hurlers in their recent All-Ireland Junior Hurling Semi Final, such was his love for his local teams. He was due to attend the St Mary’s Kiltoghert Gala Presentation event on this Saturday night but unfortunately, this wasn’t to be.

Tom has had a lifelong association with many aspects of the GAA in Leitrim and while he never played underage football for St Mary’s Kiltoghert, he always showed a keen interest in all the club’s activities and became involved at officer level at a young age becoming Treasurer in 1983. He continued in this role for 8 years, while also playing club football at Senior and Junior level.

He captained St Mary’s to a Junior Championship final in 1988 and at this stage, his great organisational skills were becoming obvious when he became manager of the club’s second team a role he held for 10 years during which he led St Mary’s to the Intermediate title in 1995. This was the year that St Mary’s Kiltoghert took the Senior, Intermediate and Minor titles, a feat unparalleled and unlikely to be ever matched.

In 1996 he took over as Chairman of the club and held this role until 2003, during this time he spearheaded the development of the new club grounds at Castlecarra, affectionally known to all as Park Tom. This was a jewel in Tom’s Chairmanship crown and one of which he can be extremely proud. The grounds, which are a hive of GAA activity, have been of tremendous assistance to Leitrim GAA, particularly on big match day in Avantcard Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada.

Fundraising is the bane of many people’s existence and many run a mile from it. Not Tom though! He always played a big role in any fundraising for the club and took great delight when his club’s lotto team topped the sales figures. In addition to this Tom has been a long time member of the Leitrim GAA Supporters Club Committee and used his talent in this regard to great effect. Tom rarely missed the traditional annual launch of the Leitrim Supporters Club in Dublin and was an ever-present on the Leitrim Bus to Dublin for these occasions in the company of his wife Tina.

At County GAA Administration level Tom served on the county Competitions Control Committee for ten years and was its Chairman for 5 years. During this time he was always approachable and dealt with all issues fairly and in the best interest of Leitrim GAA. He left his club outside the door on all occasions when making CCC decisions and that is the very best tribute we can pay to him on his tenure in charge of that committee. In recent years he had been a member of the Connacht GAA Hearings Committee which was a great honour bestowed on him to have been chosen on the ultimate provincial disciplinary decision-making committee. Of course, Tom has had a leading role on many Connacht Council match days around the province in that most unglamorous of roles, the matchday steward which involves a time investment or erosion of time, if you look at it another way, that goes way beyond what we normally associate with attending matches.

Before the era or Fás/Tús schemes, Tom was always to be found doing voluntary work at Avantcard Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada preparing for games and became Chairperson of the Páirc Seán Committee in 2010 and oversaw many developments at the grounds over his period in charge. An abiding image of Tom on match day would have been his scurrying up and down the tunnel, keys rattling, and making sure all is in perfect working order. Post-match you would most likely see him doing a lap of the field with a fertilizer bag collecting the flags and remaining on until all had exited safely. Another example of the many unglamorous but vital GAA roles that Tom gladly took charge of, such was his enthusiasm for the association that was such a big part of his life.

As a supporter, Tom clocked up many miles supporting his club and county across many age grades and codes. He was particularly proud of the sporting achievements of his daughters Lorraine and Lisa and was the staunchest supporter of their team over the years. Despite his ailing health, he made sure to be present at all their matches, no matter where in recent years and it was a pleasure to meet him on these occasions.

On February 3rd, 2018, Tom Guckian was inducted into the Jim Lynch Leitrim GAA Hall of Fame at the County’s Annual GAA Awards Ceremony. This was a fitting tribute to all of the work that Tom had got through in a lifetime’s association with GAA and a recognition of the fact that the mountains of work that goes on behind the scenes are greatly appreciated by all. Tom was, in this regard, a hero of many and for all! Tom gloriously captained many great teams whose work goes on off the field.

We are greatly saddened by his passing, which leaves yet another large void around St. Mary’s Kiltoghert, Avantcard Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada and Leitrim GAA. However, it is his family who will feel  the greatest loss and we express our sympathies to his wife Tina, daughters Lorraine and Lisa, grandson James, brothers Joe and Patsy, sister Mary B Mulvey (Butlersbridge, Co.Cavan), brothers-in-law Michael, Johnny, Charlie, Seamus, Martin, Sean and P.J, sisters-in-law Mary, Maggie, Phil, Margaret, Clare, Maura and Bernadette, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends.

Reposing at his home tomorrow, Saturday, from 2 o’clock until 6 o’clock and on Sunday from 2 o’clock until 6 o’clock. Removal to St.Patrick’s Church, Gowel on Monday morning to arrive for Mass of Christian Burial at 12 o’clock with funeral afterwards to Kiltoghert Cemetery. Family flowers only please, donations, if so desired, to Irish Motor Neuron Association (imnda.ie). House private outside of reposing times and private on Monday morning please.

Martin McCartin elected Treasurer Connacht Council GAA 2019-2021

Our heartiest congratulations to Drumreilly’s Martin McCartin, currently Leitrim GAA Treasurer, on his election as Treasurer of Connacht Council GAA for the three year period 2019-2021. Martin’s election took place at Connacht GAA Convention on Thursday night last at Áras Connacht. It is indeed a singular honour for Martin, his family and his club to be elected to this position. It also means that Leitrim will join current Council President Gerry McGovern at the top table of Connacht GAA decision making. The last time Leitrim held both positions simultaneously, they were filled by Ballinamore’s Tommy Moran as Uachtarán 2003-2005 and the late Jim Meehan, Dromahair, Treasurer, 2004-2006. We are delighted for Martin and wish him the very best of luck with what is bound to be a very bust dual portfolio.

2019 Leitrim GAA Supporters Club launched in Croke Park last night

There was a terrific turn out of Leitrim GAA Supporters at the Celtic Suite, Croke Park, last night as the Dublin Branch of the Leitrim GAA Supporters Club hosted its annual event. A gathering of approximately 170 people had two hours of informative talks and great entertainment under the direction of the Dublin committee led by Chairperson Mike Feeney who introduced proceedings. MC for the night, the excellent Colin Regan, interviewed Leitrim GAA Chairman Terence Boyle on ongoing developments at Leitrim GAA and also Leitrim GAA Senior Team Manager Terry Hyland as he looked forward to the season ahead. Eamonn Duignan gave a detailed presentation on the ‘Buy a Brick’ fundraising venture to complete the Centre of Excellence at Annaduff. He revealed that this campaign has raised €70,000 to date as we look forward to concluding this project by June of this year.

The second part of the show belonged to 2019 Leitrim Guardian Person of the Year Seamus O Rourke who brought the house down with his inimitable style of humour which sent the punters home smiling. Our thanks to all who attended the event and indeed to all who joined us via Facebook Live from around the world. We look forward to a great year for Leitrim GAA and you can help us greatly by getting your ticket for the 2019 Supporters Club Draw and indeed if you could help us complete the wall in Annaduff that would be the icing on the cake!

Ciorcail Comhrá – Irish Conversation Classes Ballinamore Library

 

Ballinamore Library’s Irish classes are regarded as being some of the most successful in the country with big numbers attending and a most entertaining atmosphere. The Conversation classes, or Ciorcail Comhrá, are now in their thirteenth year and are hugely popular every year.

Full range of classes will start in Ballinamore Library on Tuesday, 8 January 2019 at 8.00pm. There are separate groups for relative beginners, for those who have some Irish and for those who are fluent. These classes are a great opportunity to practice the Irish you know and to improve it. Also, Leaving Cert or transitional year students will find it useful for practice for their Irish orals. Classes are free of charge and will run for 10 weeks to mid March. The late Brian Mulvey, Kiltoghert, County Leitrim and St. Mary’s GAA Club.

Leitrim GAA wishes to express its deepest sympathies to the family of the late Brian Mulvey, Kiltoghert, Ck-on-Shannon, and formerly of St Mary’s Kiltoghert GAA Club. Brian passed away yesterday after a long illness bravely borne.

Brian Mulvey spent the entirety of his adult life in voluntary service to his beloved St Mary’s Kiltoghert GAA club. As a player, he was the essence of what a club player should be, selfless, dedicated and above all loyal to the club cause. At underage level he won Under 14 and Under 16 County Championship medals. As a senior player over many years he was a St Mary’s stalwart. He played in three SFC Finals, 1977 as goalkeeper, 1983 as wingback and finally as goalkeeper in 1993 but ended up on the losing side on each occasion. When his playing career finished at the club’s highest level, he continued to lineout at the lower levels for many years, such was his love for the game. He played with and won an IFC medal in St. Mary’s glory year of 1995, the year the club captured a glorious treble of SFC, IFC and MFC titles. He went on to add JFC A, B and C medals as his playing career continued to a conclusion.  Beyond his playing days, he moved seamlessly into the mentor’s role and was present on the sideline for many of club’s teams across all levels from underage right through to senior level, managing the St Mary’s Senior team in 2000. He would have been an almost ever present mentor to various successful club teams at Intermediate and Junior level over the years.

Brian was a ‘go-to man’ for St Mary’s Kiltoghert GAA Club and if there was a job to do he would always be willing to help out or take charge of a task at hand.  His presence at all St Mary’s Kiltoghert GAA events was a certainty, whether leading from the front or helping selflessly in the background. His dedication to the club’s cause was mirrored by his volunteerism at Avantcard Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada. On any match day, big or small, Brian was always there. His role as chief steward on big match occasions could not be understated and he worked away in the background ensuring that all occasions were handled with extreme efficiency. His illness didn’t faze him in the slightest over recent times and Brian just got on with the job in hand. His presence was a certainty and that included the recent Connacht Club Championship matches played at Leitrim HQ last month.

Brian Mulvey will be sorely missed by all who knew him across GAA circles at all levels and indeed the many with whom he came in contact with during his long years of service with the ESB.  It will be his family who will miss him the most and in this regard, we send our deepest sympathies to his daughter Bronagh, her husband Warren, Brian’s partner Geraldine, his brothers Michael and Joe, sisters Kay, Bridie, Peggy and Rosemary, his extended family and a very wide circle of colleagues and friends. Brian is predeceased by his late wife Breege, his son Barry and brother Cyril.

This system to be trialled during 2019 by monitoring the occasions and situations where such a system could be availed of. This committee to produce its recommendations with regard to its implementation at the end of the Championship season.

At the conclusion of the 2019 League playing season, Leagues to be restructured to into 6 divisions based on the following model:

Division 1        8 Teams

Division 2        8 Teams

Division 3        7 Teams

Reserve 1        8 Teams

Reserve 2        8 Teams

Reserve 3        7 Teams

Divisions 1-3 to contain only club first teams based on the respective finishing positions at the end of the 2019 playing season.

Reserve 1-3 to contain second and third teams based on the respective finishing positions at the end of the 2019 playing season.

Promotion and relegation would take place annually on a two up two down basis between Divisions 1 and 2 and 2 and 3. No relegation from Division 3.

Promotion and relegation would take place annually on a two up two down basis between Reserve 1-3. No promotion from Reserve 1.

Division 1-3

Two competitions to be played annually as follows:

Premier Competition which would involve 7 games in Divisions 1 and 2 and 6 games in Division 3. Promotion and relegation to be decided in this competition and all club’s players to be available for these rounds. Regular League titles to be awarded for these competitions with top 2 teams in each division contesting the respective finals.

Secondary Competition which would involve 7 games in Divisions 1 and 2 and 6 games in Division 3. These games to be played as reverse fixtures to the main competition with separate trophies, possibly to be named after significant former greats who have passed on, with top two teams contesting league finals. These games to be played while inter county season is in flow.

Reserve 1-3

One Competition to be played annually as follows:

This would involve 7 games in Divisions 4 and 5 and 6 games in Division 6. Promotion and relegation would be decided in this competition. Top 2 teams contest respective finals.

In all of the above League series Rule 6.21 TO 2018 shall be used to determine the places in the event of ties.

Current Competition Regulations to be amended accordingly.

Leitrim GAA proposes to commence the restructuring of the County Championships from the end of the 2019 season as follows with the stated intention of reviewing this model at the end of the 2021 season with a clear view towards proposing a further reduction of teams at each championship grades at the higher levels depending on standards of play and competitiveness:

Two Groups of 5 with each team playing each other in round robin series. Top placed team in each group to qualify for the semi-finals. The second and third-placed teams will play each other in quarterfinals (2 v 3, 3 v 2). Open draw in semi finals with top placed teams after group stages kept apart in this draw. Bottom placed team in each group to play each other in the relegation final with the defeated team to be relegated.

Bottom placed team in each group to play each other in relegation final with losing team to be relegated. Seeding to be maintained as suggested for 2019 with modifications.

A round robin series to be played and concluded as normal, with top team in each of the 2 groups of 4 qualifying for the semi finals. First and second placed teams in the group of 3 plays a second placed team in the groups of 4 (open draw) in quarter finals. Junior B Football Championship Winners 2019 will not be promoted to Junior A for 2020 only.

2020 Junior A Football Championship

Two Groups of 5 with each team playing each other in round robin series. Top placed team in each group to qualify for the semi finals. The second and third placed teams will play each other in quarter finals (2 v 3, 3 v 2). Open draw in semi finals with top placed teams after group stages kept apart in this draw. Bottom placed team in each group to play each other in relegation final with losing team to be relegated.

Seeding to be introduced into the 2020 Junior A Championship draw.

Junior B Football Championship 2019 (9 Teams)

Three Groups of 3 teams and to be played as in 2018. The first placed team in each group plus the best second placed team across the three groups will constitute the semi finalists. Semi final draws to ensure that teams from the same group will not meet at this stage. Beaten semi finalists play relegation play off with defeated team relegated along with the remaining five teams. No promotion of 2019 Championship winners and with the arrival of 5 additional teams in 2020 there is a probability of there being teams 14 to play here in 2020. With the uncertainty that arises at this level with teams affiliating/not affiliating on any given year, the following format to take place for 2020:

Junior B Football Championship 2020

5 relegated teams from Junior A 2019 plus Junior B Championship Finalists 2019 and Junior B 2019 relegation play off winner to form 2 groups of 4. Top two teams in each group play each other (1 v 2, 2 v 1) in championship semi finals. Bottom teams of each respective group play relegation final.

Junior C Football Championship 2020

6 relegated teams from the 2019 Junior B Championship (numbers based on 2018 affiliated teams) to be played off in respective groups of 3. The top 2 teams in each group will play championship semi finals. Winner of JFC C in 2020 to be promoted to JFC B 2021.

In all of the above Championship series Rule 6.21 TO 2018 shall be used to determine ties at the concluding stages of Round Robin Championship formats.

Motion 3 Not Discussed as no longer relevant with the passing of Competition Motion 1

That in order to provide games for senior club players when the county panel are tied up with county team, a cup competition (To be named after a prominent Leitrim personality of the past) be organised for Div I teams on the following basis. Twelve teams to be divided into two groups of six (random selection) Each team play five games with top two contesting final. All Div I teams must take part with normal rules in regard to walk-overs applying. To be completed by end of June.

CCC to be given the authority include in its regulations the scheduling of two rounds of the All County Leagues that are to be exclusively played without members of the Leitrim Senior Football Panel in 2019 and the years beyond, while the current format of 12 Team leagues continues. Failure to adhere to this regulation will lead to a loss of points, with award to the other team for the said fixtures on a proven objection in accordance with Rule 7.10 TO 2018 by a club concerned.

The following motion was submitted by the CCC and published Coiste Chontae Liatrioma Comhdhail Bhliantuil 2018 and was passed at the first meeting of the Coiste Chontae Liatroma following convention

“CCC be given the authority to include in its regulations the scheduling of two round of the All County Leagues that are to be exclusively played without members  of the Leitrim Senior Panel in 2018 and the years beyond while the current format of the 12 team leagues continues”

It is our current motion to repeal this motion and remove this provision

That underage football in Leitrim would revert back to even ages e.g. U12, U14 etc. in unison with our neighbouring counties and the majority of the country.

Gaeltacht Grants Draw 2018

There was a large number of applicants for the Gaeltacht grants offered by Coiste Contae Liatroma. Leitrim County Board GAA was pleased to receive support from Leitrim County Council for this project. Grants of between €200 and €400 were awarded to the winners.

Convention Motions

The following are the various Convention Motions. Motions will be dealt with at Convention on Sunday, December 16th and the Meeting of Coiste Chontae Liatroma that will take place immediately following Convention.

That Árd Comhairle appoints a committee to consider the implementation of a TMO (Television Match Official) at major games where adequate television coverage is available. This system to be trialled during 2019 by monitoring the occasions and situations where such a system could be availed of. This committee to produce its recommendations with regard to its implementation at the end of the Championship season.

All County Leagues

At the conclusion of the 2019 League playing season, Leagues to be restructured to into 6 divisions based on the following model:

Division 1        8 Teams

Division 2        8 Teams

Division 3        7 Teams

Reserve 1        8 Teams

Reserve 2        8 Teams

Reserve 3        7 Teams

Divisions 1-3 to contain only club first teams based on the respective finishing positions at the end of the 2019 playing season.

Reserve 1-3 to contain second and third teams based on the respective finishing positions at the end of the 2019 playing season.

Promotion and relegation would take place annually on a two up two down basis between Divisions 1 and 2 and 2 and 3. No relegation from Division 3.

Promotion and relegation would take place annually on a two up two down basis between Reserve 1-3. No promotion from Reserve 1.

Division 1-3

Two competitions to be played annually as follows:

Premier Competition which would involve 7 games in Divisions 1 and 2 and 6 games in Division 3. Promotion and relegation to be decided in this competition and all club’s players to be available for these rounds. Regular League titles to be awarded for these competitions with top 2 teams in each division contesting the respective finals.

Secondary Competition which would involve 7 games in Divisions 1 and 2 and 6 games in Division 3. These games to be played as reverse fixtures to the main competition with separate trophies, possibly to be named after significant former greats who have passed on, with top two teams contesting league finals. These games to be played while inter county season is in flow.

Reserve 1-3

One Competition to be played annually as follows:

This would involve 7 games in Divisions 4 and 5 and 6 games in Division 6. Promotion and relegation would be decided in this competition. Top 2 teams contest respective finals.

In all of the above League series Rule 6.21 TO 2018 shall be used to determine the places in the event of ties.

Current Competition Regulations to be amended accordingly.

Leitrim GAA proposes to commence the restructuring of the County Championships from the end of the 2019 season as follows with the stated intention of reviewing this model at the end of the 2021 season with a clear view towards proposing a further reduction of teams at each championship grades at the higher levels depending on standards of play and competitiveness:

Bottom placed team in each group to play each other in the relegation final with the defeated team to be relegated.
