Leitrim appearances are all too rare in Croke Park. So the return of the launch of the GAA Supporters Club draw to the famous ground this January 30th offers a welcome excuse for Leitrim GAA fans to visit the Association’s headquarters.
Last year’s launch in Croke Park, also organised by the Dublin Branch of the Leitrim’s Supporters Club, drew the largest crowd to the event in years with over 140 in attendance. It was a great social occasion with many Leitrim natives travelling from Meath, Louth, Wicklow, Kildare, and all over Dublin to catch up and enjoy the unique entertainment of Carrigallen playwright and actor Seamus O’Rourke.
This year’s entertainment is also of the highest order. Leitrim Person of the Year, Eleanor Shanley, will officially launch the 2014 Supporters Club draw on the night while also treating those present to a few songs, while captain of the Connacht winning team of 1994, Declan Darcy, will also be in attendance. Declan will discuss his experience as a selector with the 2013 All Ireland football champions Dublin in conversation with former Leitrim footballer and sports columnist with the Leitrim Observer, Colin Regan, who will act as MC on the night. The pair will be joined by one of the current senior football panellists for a discussion offering a great insight into what inter-county football is all about in the modern era.
The new Leitrim senior football Manager, Sean Hagan, will also outline his plans for the year ahead while County Chairperson, Joe Flynn, will provide an update on all Leitrim GAA activities.
Last year a large crowd also travelled from the Leitrim to be there and as usual the County Board will be putting on a bus for those wishing to make the journey this year (see www.leitrimgaa.ie and The Leitrim Observer for details in the coming weeks).
This will be another great Leitrim gathering and we hope you can join us. Please also spread the word to anyone from Leitrim you may know that would be interested in attending – the more the merrier.
The night kick-starts a fundraising campaign without which the Leitrim County Board simply couldn’t continue its high level of work and investment in Leitrim teams on and off the field. Every ticket sold makes a real difference. A special draw on the night will take place for those who buy a Supporters Club ticket or take a booklet of tickets to sell subsequently.
The event will take place on Thursday, January 30, at 7.30pm in the Celtic Suite of Croke Park with parking available in the Cusack Stand car park (accessed through the GAA museum entrance off Clonliffe Road. (Doors will open at 7.30pm with the addresses and entertainment starting at 8pm sharp.) Please contact Mike Feeney, Chairperson Dublin Branch, for more details. Off the Booze, On the Ball
Clubs interested inÓgetting ‘Off the Booze & On the Ball’ are reminded that registration for this fun health challenge is ongoing and will remain open until February 1st.
The fundraising element remains an incentive for participating clubs, with individuals and/or teams and panels choosing to abstain from alcohol for a period of four weeks to kick start their New Year on a health footing. Everyone who registers receives an information pack with practical tips on how to implement a healthier lifestyle as well as a sponsorship card.
Traditionally focused on GAA clubs and members during the month of January, the Challenge, as it is also known, invites participants to abstain from alcohol for four weeks in order to give their New Year a healthy kick-start.
Driven by the GAA’s Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) programme, a partnership with the HSE, ‘The Challenge’ offers participants the opportunity to press pause following the hectic social calendar of the holiday season. For some clubs, The Challenge is also used as an opportunity to fundraise in a fun and healthy way – everyone who registers receives an information pack with practical tips on how to implement a healthier lifestyle as well as a sponsorship card.
“This is a novel way of addressing an issue that is of importance to every one of us – our health and wellbeing,” explains Uachtarán CLG, Liam O’Neill, who launched the 2014 Off the Booze & On the Ball challenge in Croke Park in November. “Engaging with your local GAA club is one of the best things you can do for your physical, mental, social, and emotional health. How we engage with alcohol has an impact on all of those aspects of our health. We are delighted to have this events as part of our annual calendar, and I hope our club members continue to take up the challenge as they have done over the past two years.”
The GAA will be promoting The Challenge through their Facebook and Twitter accounts and will be offering participants support and incentives throughout the campaign period.
Visit www.gaa.ie/thechallenge for more details and to register for ‘Off the Booze and On the Ball’.
Alternatively, email asap@gaa.ie should you need any information not available on our website.
