Many congratulations to the Leitrim Ladies team and panel on their fantastic win in Croke Park today. It was a very entertaiing game and Leitrim never lost their composure something no doubt they gained from last years experience. A homecoming event will be held tomorrow evening as all teams are tonight in the City West hotel for the Post Match Banquet. Full details of the homecoming will be posted here tomorrow.

A tremendous display by the 34-year-old Ann Marie Cox, who scored eight points, ensured that Leitrim won only their second-ever adult Ladies football title and a first-ever Intermediate success at Croke Park this afternoon.

The final was certainly on a knife-edge throughout and although Wexford held a 0-05 to 0-01 lead after nine-and-a-half minutes play, they were certainly tested by a very committed and strong Leitrim team who turned a four-point deficit into a two-point interval lead.

Leitrims first and only point of the opening ten minutes came from half-forward Anna Conlon, but Wexford were strong and excellent points from Deirdre Fox, Caroline Murphy, Sharon Kehoe, Liz Evered and Kate Kelly gave Brendan Dardis charges the early advantage.

However, Leitrim suddenly bounced back strongly with four points in a three-minute spell, with veteran player Cox in excellent form from placed balls, while Eileen Donaghue and Sarah McLoughlin were also on target as the sides were level for the second time.

Wexford regained the lead thanks to a Josie Dwyer effort but Leitrim responded well.

Following a superb save by goalkeeper Louise Loughlin from a Kate Kelly shot, the Leitrim side bossed the tie until the interval with another Cox pointed free and two Sarah McLoughlin points from play ensuring a 0-08 to 0-06 half-time lead for them.

Caroline Murphy responded well for Wexford with the first point after the restart but Leitrim still held the lead. Yet the purple and gold-clad side quickly broke in front thanks to a well-worked goal from Kate Kelly, who shook off the challenge of two defenders to score.

But Wexfords lead was to be short-lived as the free-taking machine that is Ann Marie Cox scored her sides next four points. Coxs dead ball prowess, along with scores from Eileen Donaghue and Sarah McLoughlin, saw Leitrim build up a 0-15 to 1-08 lead.

Wexford managed to point two frees in quick succession but Leitrim continued to remain strong and an excellent point from play from Cox summed up Leitrims day.

Wexford never gave up but Leitrims defence remained resilient and they went on to lift a first adult title since 1988.

On behalf of all the Clubs and the County Board Id like to wish the Ladies Team the very best of luck on Sunday in Croke Park. Its a remarkable achievement to make it to an All Ireland Final two years in a row especially since this is a step up from last year to Intermediate. The game is at 2pm and if you cannot make it to the game you can watch it on TG4, listen to it on local radio or you can follow the scores on our Live scoreboard.

Best wishes also to Linda Tighe & Naomi Lee, who play this year for London, in their Final against Kilkenny which is at the earlier time of 12pm.

tonight (Thursday) will be the last opportunity for supporters to buy tickets in Leitrim for Sundays All Ireland Final when they go on sale in the Community Centre in Manorhamilton from 8.30pm to 10.00pm. The demand for tickets has grown steadily over the past two weeks with over 500 tickets sold in Creegans of Cloone on Tuesday night. Reports from all areas indicate a huge level of demand as confirmed by the fact that to date Leitrim have proportionately outsold tickets over all other five counties participating on the day.

Anyone who has missed the chance to get tickets in Leitrim – dont despair.. Tickets are available for sale on the day and your support would be much appreciated.

The team had their final training session in Cloone last night and the spirit in the camp is very upbeat with all looking forward to a successful conclusion to the season.

We would encourage all supporters to bring as much colour and atmosphere to Croke Park as possible on Sunday and and lift Leitrim across the line as the "16th (wo)man"

Come on Leitrim..

Leitrim supporters will have an opportunity to support two teams in the Ladies All Ireland Finals in Croke Park on 23rd September when Kiltubrids Naomi Lee and Linda Tighe line out for London in the Junior Final in the curtain raiser of the three match programme.

While Leitrim were defeating Clare on Saturday, Linda and Naomi were playing in the All Ireland junior semi final against Carlow in Swords and enjoyed a close 4-08 to 3-09 victory to qualify for the final against Kilkenny.

Both Linda and Naomi are no strangers to Leitrim ladies football and enjoyed long playing careers together with Leitrim until their move to London in recent years to study and where they are now both employed. They enjoyed considerable success with Leitrim and were part of the teams that won the Connacht Junior Championship in 1999 and the National Junior League of 2000.

The programme for the finals will be as follows:

12.00pm       Junior Final             London v Kilkenny

2.00pm        Intermediate Final    Leitrim v Wexford

4.00pm        Senior Final            Mayo v Cork

TG4 Ladies All Ireland Intermediate Semi-final

Leitrim 3 – 7

Clare 2 – 9

Leitrim battled determinedly to win Saturday evenings pulsating TG4 All Ireland Ladies intermediate championship semi-final over Clare by a point in Cavans Kingspan Breffni Park.

Second half goals by newcomers, Michelle Reynolds and Eileen Donaghue, provided Leitrims narrow victory platform and a place in the All Ireland final against Wexford in Croke Park on Sunday, September 23.

Following twenty-three minutes in the first half, it was level pegging on 0 – 4 all, with Clare getting on level terms after Leitrim had held a slight edge in the proceedings.

In this period Ann Marie Cox shot three Leitrim points and Eileen Donaghue added a point while Clare responded with three Majella Griffin points and a point from Niamh Keane.

An Áine Kelly point before the break gave Clare a 0 – 5 to 0 – 4 interval lead but Ann Marie Cox converted a Leitrim free within two minutes of the restart, to return the game to stalemate.

Over the next fourteen minutes the lead changed hands on three occasions with Áine Kelly and Fiona Lafferty hitting Clare points while Majella Griffin added a goal, to put the Banner women ahead by a point.

Meanwhile in this spell Leitrim responded with well-taken a Michelle Reynolds goal and a point from Ann Marie Cox.

Following that Leitrim went five points up after Michelle Reynolds and Eileen Donaghue shot 48th and 49th minutes goals.

But then a Clare rally cut the Leitrim lead to the minimum before the finish with Marie Kelly firing to the net and adding a point for the Munster women while Majella Griffin also shot a point.

During this Clare onslaught Leitrim hit back with a point from Ann Marie Cox, which at the end proved just enough for the win.

Leitrim: Louise Loughlin, Catherine Holohan, Sinéad Brennan, Mary McKeon, Charlene Tyrell, Lorraine Brennan, Teresa Mylott, Maeve Quinn, Aisling Brennan, Anna Conlan, Sarah McLoughlin, Eimear McGlade, Ann Marie Cox, Eileen Donaghue, Michelle Reynolds. Subs Sinéad Quinn for McGlade (HT), Claire Plunkett for Conlan (43 mins.), McGlade for Plunkett (52 mins.).

The draw for the ladies All Ireland semi finals took place on Saturday evening following completion of the last of the quarter final games. Leitrim were the first name out of the pot and were drawn against Clare while Tipperary face Wexford in the other semi final.  While the fixtures and venues will be confirmed on Monday night, Wexford had requested that their game be played on 25th August due to the involvement of a number of players in the All Ireland Senior Camogie final. Leitrim will therefore face Clare on Saturday 1st September in a double header with Mayo v Tyrone or Cork v Laois in the Senior semi finals. All of the semi finals will be live on TG4 with a 5.30pm throw in for the Intermediate games and a 7.15pm start for the senior games.

Championship win for Leitrim Ladies:
Congratulations to the girls on a great win over Wexford in Round 4 of the All Ireland Intermediate Championship on Sunday. Played in near perfect conditions on a fine surface in Wexford Park, Leitrim were slow to start but gradually came more into the game and a super goal from sub Clare Plunkett before half time turned the tie Leitrim’s way. The team had to battle hard throughout and showed many fine qualities throughout. This great win leaves Leitrim as favourites to top Group 2 and guarantee a semi final spot if they defeat of draw with Louth on Friday evening. A special word of thanks to the Wexford Ladies County Board for their hospitality to Leitrim after the game. Thanks also in particular to the large number of Leitrim supporters who made the long journey to Wexford for the game and their vocal support throughout that lifted the girls when the going got tough.

Leitrim v Louth:
Leitrim’s final game of Group 2 in the Championship will take place on Friday evening at 7.45pm in Pairc Sean in Carrick when Louth are the visitors. The sides last met in competitive action in the quarter final of the Division 2 National League in 2004 when it took extra time to separate the sides also played in Carrick where Louth ran out two point winners. The sides have never met in Championship action but Louth took All Ireland Junior Honours in 1998. Since then they have played at senior level but following poor results in recent years were regraded to Intermediate status this year. They reached the Leinster Intermediate semi final this year but were defeated by Westmeath by 0-10 to 0-06. We would ask as many supporters as possible to come along and support the ladies in their first game in the newly developed Pairc Sean on Friday evening.

Clarkes Hotel Minor Championship:
Glencar Manor opened their campaign at the weekend with a 2-09 to 0-5 win over Sean O’Heslins. The final round of the Championships will be played on Tuesday next. AlenÓgaels host Glencar Manorhamilton and St Josephs host Sean O Heslins while Dromahair travel to Kiltubrid and St Marys to Aughawillan in the 9 a side Championship.

Pyramid Bookmakers Intermediate Club Championship:
On Sunday next Round 3 of the Championship will take place with Bornacoola entertaining Aughawillan in Dromod at 12.00pm as Cloone travel to Aughavas to play St Josephs at 11.30am. Later that afternoon Mohill travel to Annaduff to play at 4.00pm. The Kiltubrid Glencar ManorhamiltonÓgame will take place on Tuesday 14th August.

Reynolds Hardware Ballinamore Junior B Championship:
The first semi final betweenÓgortlettragh and Sean O Heslins has been provisionally fixed for 12th August.

Annaduff Credit Union Under 14 Championship:
The 7 a side final between Aughawillan and Cloone has been provisionally fixed for Saturday next. The 9 a side competition has now reached semi final stage with Aughnasheelin playing Annaduff tomorrow evening. A date has not yet been confirmed for the second semi final between Bornacoola and Fenagh.

Under 12 Championship:
St Josephs, Mohill, Glencar Manorhamilton and Drumkeerin have qualified for the semi finals of the championship which will take place later in the month.

Connacht Under 14 Blitz:
This one day competition with the five Connacht counties participating will take place on Saturday 8th September at a Mayo Venue

Potential Underdog:
Best of luck to Eimear McGlade as she hopes to make the final 24 of the Underdogs squad next weekend.
