There is a great interest and nice buzz around this adult year’s competition with many clubs reviving items that they had previously entered adopting the new rules changes to suit. And lots of hopeful interest from clubs who have been dormant for some time.
The categories and order of competitions for the county final are – Figure Dancing. Solo Singing, Recitiation, Ballad group, Nuachleas, Instrumental Music and Set dancing. The top 3 teams from the quiz will compete in the final round of the quiz on stage in the 2nd half of the night, directly after the break. Questions for these rounds are individual but are written answers only. And final marks will be given after the rounds are completed.
Competitors must be over 17 effective January 1st 2020 to compete. With only one exception – one person underage in figure and set dancing only.

One Connacht title for Leitrim in this year’s Connacht Scór Sinsir Finals last Sunday in Balla. Aughnasheelin took home the only title in the Ballad Group
The first Leitrim performance to take to the stage was St Marys in the figure dance. The ladies gave a fabulous performance but St Dominic’s in Roscommon danced through to the All-Ireland.
In Solo Singing Michael Burke of Ballinderreen, Galway won the Connacht title seeing off Leitrim’s Sinead Egan of Aughnasheelin.
Achill of Mayo took the Instrumental Music in a very talented and diverse music competition, winning over Leitrim’s 5 St Mary’s ladies team who received great rapture from the audience but unfortunately not the judges choice and Achill retained the win for Mayo for a second year.
Recitation was a very entertaining competition and Mick Rock of Elphin, Roscommon, was declared the winner. Credit to St Mary’s Kathy Butler and her witty piece representing Leitrim so well.
Leiriu winner was Elphin of Roscommon, Leitrim had no entry in this competition.
Aughnasheelin made a welcome comeback in Set Dance. Despite a steady solid performance it went once again to Aughamore of Mayo.

The Senior Scór County Final took place last Saturday, February 9th in St Marys Hall, Carrick on Shannon. Declan Bohan PRO of Leitrim County board hosted as Fear an Tí for the evening’s stage competition Though disheartening not to have an entry for all 7, It was strong and very entertaining competition. Leitrim has a tradition at all Ireland level from past years and it was disappointing to see no club entry for Leiriu once again. Something for the county to work towards going forward, given the legacy of past all Irelands won in this competition. However, it was fantastic to have some familiar faces returning to Scór Liatroma aris. Maith sibh go Leir.
Leitrim County Medals were presented to the winners by Leitrim County Board Chairperson Terance Boyle. The Cormac MacGiolla Shield for Club na Bliana was chosen by the panel of judges from Westmeath. 2019 Leitrim Scór Sinsir Finals will take place on this Saturday, February 9th, in St Mary’s Hall, Ck-on-Shannon, commencing at 5pm.
Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the Tráth na gCeist Competition has been postponed until Friday, February 22nd. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. We will endeavour to be accommodating for any issues that may arise but ask that you advise a committee member in advance if it poses any obstacle for your club’s participation.
A fabulous evening for St Marys, Leitrim regaining their Ballad group title in this year’s Connacht Scór na nÓg. The finals were held last Sunday in Claremorris, Co Mayo. The newly introduced Connacht round of the quiz was held as the first event of the day in Claremorris GAA clubhouse. Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins faced the four other Connacht county teams for a provincial round with the Leitrim team finishing with an impressive 51 points. Roscommon winning the Connacht medals for 2019. All 5 county teams will participate in the 32 County All- Ireland quiz on February 16th in Castlebar at 11am. Entrance to the quiz is free of charge.
The first Leitrim competitors to take to the main stage were St Marys Carrick on Shannon in the Figure dancing. The team gave a super lively and polished performance. Having reached their first All-Ireland last year in Sligo, there was great anticipation for a 2nd qualification for the young team. With Leitrim, Roscommon and Mayo all having competed in All-Ireland in the last 3 years, it was going to be a tight finish. St Dominic’s of Roscommon were chosen as the Connacht Winners.
In Solo Singing, Amelia Pajak of Mohill made her second appearance at Connacht level. Nerves didn’t play a part on the day for her as she gave a beautiful solo. A tight competition with some beautiful singers with varying styles, Ellen Keane from Galway emerged as the winner for the singing adjudicator.
Recitation was a very entertaining competition, from witty tales to old fables and storytelling, each act giving a different slant on the variety of material available for this competition. St Marys Michael Connorton represented Leitrim for a third consecutive year in a bid to earn his title. High credit to the young man on a fantastic performance. He had great deliverance and poise on the stage and received a very positive return from the audience with cheers and applause. Evan Gunn from Elphin, Roscommon was the judges’ winner on the day.
A fabulous win for St Marys Ballad Group gave an outstanding performance. The Carrick girls clinching their 4th Connacht title were thrilled to be representing Connacht & Leitrim at the All-Ireland once again.
Kiltubrid represented Leitrim in Instrumental Music on Sunday. A first for the club reaching the Connacht final having been knocking on the door for a number of years. The musicians received fantastic rapture from the audience but unfortunately with stiff competition, not the judge’s choice. The musical arrangements they brought to the stage and the array of instruments the young people play with ease, was certainly to be admired. Corofin of Galway lifted the title in Instrumental Music.
Aughnasheelan made a comeback in this year’s Leiriu competition. A great witty performance was given by the young team, however, the winner for a third consecutive year was St Dominic’s of Roscommon.
Annaduff were first to dance and set the pace for Rince Seit. The 8 young ladies delivered a solid performance at their Provincial debut but the title went to stalwarts of Scór, Abbeyknockmoy, Galway.
The All-Ireland Finals will be held in the TF Royal Theatre, Castlebar on February 16th at 3pm. Please note it is a ticket only event, tickets are priced at: Adult: €20, U16:€10. Family pass: €60 (2adults &2 children) Tickets once ordered are non-refundable. They can be ordered through; Claire Crossan 087-6472547. Or through club Scór officers. The Leitrim Scór na nOg County Final took place on Sunday last, December 2nd in the Mayflower, Drumshanbo. Paddy McDermott former all- Ireland quiz winner from Cavan did an excellent job hosting the table quiz final. With 12 teams taking part and a tight finish to the final round, Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins managed to claim the county title for 2019. The 4 young men qualify for the All-Ireland table quiz to be held in the TF Theatre in Castlebar next February. An added bonus and a great practice round is also provided by Coiste Connacht when they host a provincial round at their finals to be held in January. The main stage competition exceeded expectations in both numbers and talent. A huge amount of effort from clubs, with numbers very much increased on previous year’s finals. It was a proud day for Leitrim to host a final with entries in all disciplines, something that was not easily achieved around Connacht. Bean an Tí for the day was Sarah McWeeney from Aughnasheelan, having lots of experience as a competitor, she settled into the role with ease. Leitrim county finalist’s hopefuls took to the stage to present their best-polished performance to the judges from Monaghan. Well done to all 12 clubs who took part – Aughavas, Annaduff, Aughnasheelan, Allen Gaels, Ballinaglera, Fenagh, Glencar-Manorhamilton, Gortletteragh, Kiltubrid, Leitrim Gaels, Mohill and St Mary’s. It was a fabulous afternoon of music, song & dance. It was great to see some familiar faces returning to Scór Liatroma aris. Maith sibh go Leir.
Medals were presented to the winners by Chairperson of Leitrim’s Cathaoirleach Coiste Scór Claire Crossan. Club na mBliana was selected by the adjudicators and awarded to St Mary’s for their huge entries (11) in this year’s competition. The Cormac MacGiolla Shield was proudly presented to Laura Crossan, Cultural officer of St Mary’s by Ailbhe McGill, Bornacoola.
