Going for a Double

It all starts early Saturday morning on Carrick on Shannon Golf Course, when the Leitrim Supporters tee off in the fund-raising Golf Classic. Well, Friday evening really, as golfers descend on the town and the county to swing and to support the green and gold. Mike Carty is travelling from New York and has former DublinÓgreats like Tony Hanahoe and Brian Mullins lined up for his team, while Barry Donnellan, Joe Leydon and Mike Feeney will have rounded up every swinger around Dublin to play for the Leitrim cause. They will be joined by a plethora of home based golfers, with some teams even featuring a few from the enemy camp across the bridge.

The Classic will Scórcely decide either of the games on Sunday as we go for a double, but it will certainly show both teams and their mentors that we are fully behind them. It’s nice for the players to know that there is great good will towards them. Of course it is also important that supporters flock to the Hyde in big numbers — as the sloganÓgoes “Nothing beats being there”.

The Junior team has qualified for the Connacht Final, almost unnoticed by the wider GAA world. But defeating Galway in the semi-final was no mean feat, especially when we realise the Leitrim has come out top against the Tribesmen this year in Senior, Under 21, Minor and Junior — surely the makings of a six marker at some future GAA Quiz.

Manager Martin McGowan and selectors Jimmy Holohan and Thomas Keenan have blended together quite a formidable side, with some players who would not be one bit out of place in the senior clash against Roscommon. Opponents Sligo have done well at this grade in recent years and will be tough opposition, but it is expected that Leitrim will be just too strong for them and get the green and gold roar going early in Hyde Park. Throw in is at 1pm, so get there on time.

Our seniors are quoted as 1000 to 1 to win the All Ireland, the Rossies are priced a bit better. But neither side will be thinking about Paddy Power or his odds when they tear from the dressing room in the corner to the welcoming cheers from all sections of the ground. One thing is certain, Leitrim have no fears of Roscommon, nor have they any fears of playing in Hyde Park, it is almost considered a home ground. Many minds will be thinking back almost twenty years on Sunday to the day that Declan Darcy and 1927 Captain Tom Gannon were presented with the Nestor Cup in front of the stand and in front of proud hearts and tear filled eyes, with victory over Mayo, after already defeating Galway and Roscommon on the way. Others will be reminiscing about the turn of the Millennium, when there was a green and gold pitch invasion and the Rossies stood there, dumbfounded.

Time brings changes and we have to look at the cold hard facts. Going on form in the Allianz League, Roscommon have to be acknowledged as favourites. But then they were the red hot tip in the FBD Connacht League and we can remember what happened. So it is all to play for. Our last championship game in this venue is one we have to banish from our thoughts. That was last year when we bowed out in the replay against London — though Leitrim did stage one of the greatest fight-backs of the 2013 championship in the second half,

That’s the sort of performance we have to produce on Sunday and Sean Hagan, his backroom team and the players have done everything possible in preparation for this eagerly-awaited clash.

The build-up to Sunday among supporters will contain the usual “Will ye have fifteen?”, especially along the run of the Shannon from Dowra to Rooskey; the Hens and Stags in Carrick on Saturday night will wonder what all the hulabaloo is about; some houses will fly both the Leitrim and Roscommon colours (at least we inter-marry) and any sensible publican will do likewise, to pull in the punters.

Going back to 1994, when Leitrim reached Croke Park, we had no better supporters than the Rossies; likewise in the last few weeks all of Leitrim were hoping for an Under 21 title for Roscommon. But Sunday is different —- and this is one of the things that makes the GAA what it is.

So let the green and gold army be on the march early and staying till the fat lady sings. The double would really give us something to shout about.

Leitrim Players are Local Heroes

Nothing beats being there has been the GAA’s promotional slogan to encourage supporters to attend the Provincial and All Ireland Championships. Truth to tell, there is little to compare to the excitement of the football and hurling championships in the build up to September.
The high regard in which inter-county players are held was emphasised on Sunday last in Páirc Mac Diarmada, when Leitrim GAA hosted an Open Day for supporters, but particularly for children. The inter-action between the players, their managements and backroom teams and the youngsters was quite a promotional exercise and thoroughly enjoyed by all present.
Coiste na nÓg had the Allen Gaels, Carrigallen, Melvin Gaels and Ballinamore Sean O’Heslin Juvenile teams in attendance to play a series of blitzes, with county players acting as coaches, selectors, referees and water boys, much to the delight of the four teams. For once, the results of the games didn’t matter, a fun day was what it was all about.
But better was to come when every child in Páirc Seán had the opportunity to join a team that played a challenge against the Leitrim Senior footballers — hundreds against fifteen! The referee was none other than football Manager Sean Hagan, who certainly let the game flow and kept the black cards in his pocket. Doing the commentary on the game was current centre half back Gary Reynolds, who was the unanimous choice of the players for the task. Correction – he was actually second choice, but Gerry Hickey had baulked at the proposition — he would rather face the wild tackles from the Juveniles than do a commentary on a game his team mates were certain to lose. And lose they did, with the kids Scóring at will, due to some dodgy refereeing and umpiring decisions.
Then it was time for piggy back races and all kinds of hilarity, with the footballers and hurlers intermingling with their young fans. James Molloy had everyone lined up for the customary “High Fives”, but sudden incessant rain put paid to that.
However, all was not lost, as everyone retreated to the shelter of the stand, where the main organiser, County Board PRO Collette Fox, had goodies and promotional material ready for distribution to all the kids and the players were besieged for autographs. You see, these players are the local sporting heroes for our young generation.
Thanks is due to everyone involved – Terence Boyle and Barbara Byrne from Coiste na nÓg, Thomas Keenan, Games Promotion Manager, the Leitrim County Board, James Molloy, Brian Blake and all those who helped out on the day. But special gratitude must go to the team managements and particularly all the players who made the Championship Open Day one to remember.

Some photographs from the day are available on our Facebook page

LINKING THE AGES IN LEITRIM

Leitrim GAA Open Day

On Sunday next 11th May at 12 noon Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada in Carrick on Shannon will be buzzing with activity as the Leitrim senior football and hurling teams, team managements, County Board officers, coaches and GPOs, supporters of all ages, team and championship sponsors, the local media and a virtual army of young stars of the future will converge on the county grounds for the Leitrim launch of the Connacht and All Ireland Football Championship.

The day will see our young boys and girls get to meet their county players up close, to get their autographs and to dream of the day when they too might wear the Leitrim jersey with the same pride and enthusiasm as the current county squads.

The emphasis will be on a fun day and an ideal chance to meet the players one to one and to extend our good wishes to them for the forthcoming campaign.

Young and old are welcome to come along to Páirc Seán on Sunday (11th May) at 12 noon.

29-Apr-14 by Leitrim Ladies

No joy for Leitrim participants at this years All-Ireland. The cold shoulder was felt among all Connacht competitors as the Province were to all come home empty handed. The standard of this years finalists was as high as ever seen in previous years but Leitrim were still eagerly tipped winners amongst the hustle and rumours of the audience.

The new Question time quiz took place separately than the main event early on Saturday morning inÓgMIT, Castlebar. Leitrim were represented by Melvin Gaels, Cork emerged the All-Ireland winners.
St Marys Figure dancers gave a fine performance. The 8 ladies had nothing left to give when they emerged down from the stage, all the energy they possessed was left on the floor of the TF. However they were admirably beaten by Glenflesk of Kerry.
Aiden Dockery of Bornacoola gave a very moving rendition in recitation accompanied elegantly by Irene Guckian on fiddle, Sharon Walsh of Kildare with a very witty piece of drama was declared the All-Ireland champ.
St Marys took to the stage a second time in Ballad Group. A very diligent group with plenty of experience of what was expected to win this title and they certainly delivered. Dismay and disbelief when Omaghs five men swooped it up for Ulster.
Fenagh Set Dancers, despite the long wait to the end of the day put out an excellent performance. Rapturous cheers and applause for this fine young team, it was not to be their year as Kerry took their second dancing title.
Despite no All-Ireland titles, a fine days entertainment was provided and each act and group truly earned their place in the final. Sincere thanks to all who travelled to Castlebar, the support from the crowd certainly added to the atmosphere and eased the competitors nerves.

All-Ireland winners:
Rince Foirne: Glenflesk, Kerry
Solo Singing: Hannah Ferguson, Derry
Recitation: Sharon Walsh, Kildare
Ceol Uirlise: Mountmellick, Laois
Trath Na gCeisteanna: Cork
Léiriú: St Josephs Westmeath
Ballad Group: St Endas, Omagh Tyrone
Set Dancing: Kilcumman, Kerry
