Leitrim Minors were defeated by Roscommon in their second game of the 2013 Connacht Minor Football League in Kiltoom last Saturday. The final score was Leitrim 1-08, Roscommon 1-14.
The defeat is disappointing for the Leitrim panel who secured a draw with Sligo after a dramatic ending to the game and hopes were high that Leitrim would be able to come out and do the same against Roscommon. Even though the score line shows a difference of six points Leitrim did put it up to Roscommon as they only trailed by a point with 12 minutes of the game remaining.
Roscommon were quick of the blocks in the first half with the first point by JohnÓgannon 10 seconds after throw-in. Leitrim scored their first point shortly afterwards by a free converted by Luke Murphy but it was Roscommon who were looking the stronger of the two teams and within 11 minutes played Roscommon were up another point by a free converted by Diarmuid Murphy and a goal scored by Henry Walsh. With 10 minutes remaining in the first half Leitrim brought the score back to leave just two points between the sides after Murphy converted a free and a point from Conor Gaffney. But it was Roscommon that finished the first half stronger with three points from Diarmuid Murtagh (one free). Leitrims Cathal McCauley converted a free but Roscommon ended the half by a free converted by Walsh to give his side a 1-7 to 0-4 lead at half time.
The second half showed that Leitrim were much brighter after the restart despite the fact Roscommon extended their lead by two points by Murtagh. The Leitrim comeback began with a free converted by Cathal McCauley and after the introduction of both Aaron McLoughlin and Dean Brolly the team looked dangerous every time they attacked. Points from Mark Plunkett and a McCauley free brought them to five points between the teams. Half way through the second half Leitrim scored a goal by Cathal McCauley who had been awarded a free. The free was from a tight angle to the right of the RoscommonÓgoal and to every ones amazement the ball ended up in the back on the net. Leitrims Conor Gaffney reduced the lead to one point three minutes later after getting a point. However Roscommon dominated the last 10 minutes to secure victory. Points from Walsh (free), Shane Pettit, JohnÓgannon (free), Diarmuid Murtagh and Ronan Daly putting the final score as Leitrim 1-08, Roscommon (1-14).

Connacht Scór Final Report
ScórAn incredible night for Leitrim in the Connacht Scór Finals in St Marys Hall Carrick on Shannon on Saturday. Leitrim topped the polls of titles on the night by winning 5 of the 8 events. This brings our Connacht titles to 110 in Scór since it started in 1970. Leitrim also retained the Cormac MacGilla cup which was won in recognition of our success, the cup has never been outside of Leitrim since it was introduced to the competition, it was presented to Rúnai Maura Mulvey by Ailbhe McGill.
St Marys were first to the stage in Rince Foirne and won the Figure Dance on home ground, beating the 8 ladies from Kilglass, Co Roscommon. This is the clubs 2nd trip in a row to the All-Ireland, having won it for the first time in 2012 and they will be hoping to go the extra mile and bring the title back to Leitrim.
Aisling Maxwell from Ballinamore gave a fabulous performance in solo singing but Norrie Kane of Abbeyknockmoy took the title back to Galway.
Drumkeerin represented Leitrim in Instrumental Music, they gave a flawless foot tapping performance but unfortunately St Farnans of Sligo were announced the winners.
Brendan Brennan from Sean OHeslins club went down a treat in RecitationÓgiving all in the crowd a very entertaining piece and clinched his Connacht medal on his fabulous performance.
An unfortunate loss for the St Marys Ballad group who gave yet another outstanding All-Ireland standard performance, but yet were pipped to the post by our Roscommon neighbours. Having made it to the All Ireland on 2 separate occasions in the last 5 years, disbelief was felt among the Leitrim supporters when the adjudicators results were read out and it was not to be for this exceptional group.
It wasnt the night either for our 2012 All Ireland champs Bornacoola in the Question Time as the final marks were totted up, Clann Na nGael of Roscommon were the quiz winners.
The fantastic and witty Seán OHeslins won the Novelty Act. Having last won the All-lreland in 2009 they will be hoping for success again in Derry.
Leona Reynolds from Aughnasheelin competed in Rince Sean-Os, a very well executed performance, mixing the traditional old style steps with some very nice quirky modern clicks and lifts and successfully won the title.
Set Dancing was won by the fabulous young Fenagh team, a fine performance and worthy winners.

Leitrim 0-6 Longford 3-07
Coiste na nÓgIn the opening 10 minutes Leitrim showed promise as they started off the game well with good movement and they opened the Scóring with a Cathal McCauley free and a fine Conor Gaffney point in the first four minutes but Leitrim were dealt a blow when Longford’€’s Martin Cassidy scored Longford’€’s first goal.
Leitrim hit back with a point from Daire Farrell who soloed through for a fine point but it was clear to see at this stage that Longford was dominating most of the game but for terrible shooting the score line would have shown a bigger lead by Longford. Longford went four points ahead with Patrick Kiernan, Larry Moran (2) and a free from Cassidy and with four minutes of the half left Eoin Sorohan hammered the ball into the back of Leitrim’€’s net and unfortunately they weren’€’t finished there as less than one minute later Longford scored their third goal again by Eoin Sorohan. Just before half time Plunkett for Leitrim and Cassidy for Longford scored points giving a half time score Leitrim 0-4, Longford 3-05.
Both teams only managed to score two points each in the second half , the first one was a fine point scored by Conor Dolan but Longford replied with two points from Cassidy and Shane Kelly. With ten minutes to go sub Cathal KeeganÓgot a great point with a long range effort bringing the full time score to Leitrim 0-6, Longford 3-7.
