Last week was a very busy week for the Leitrim representitives in the Connacht Táin league.  In division 2A Carrick and Cluainin Iomaint were drawn to play in Kiltubrid last Wednesday in a play off.  Carrick were vicorious winning on a score line of 0.17 to 0.07.  This win meant they had to play Belmullet on Saturday.  Carrick again had an impressive win over Belmullet on a Scórline of 5.07 to 3.06.  Carrick now have to play Castlebar Mitchels at the Connacht GAA 3G pitch Tuesday 16th at 8.30pm.  This will be Carricks fourth game in 12 days.  With quite a young team they will be hoping youth will be on their side as they take on the Mayo club and make history in the first year of the Connacht Táin hurling league.

Sligo hurling league –
Cluainin Iomaint under 16s recorded their second win last Wednesday evening when they beat Coolera/Strandhill on a scoreline of  4.10 to 6.08. Andrew Loughlin was man of the match for Cluainin as he comanded the defence.  In the forwards Damon Beattie continued his Scóring form by Scóring 2.03 while Martin Feeney scored 2.04. Feeney showed some lovely touches and scored some fine points. Ferghal Rooney first game back for the club also impressed and scored a great point on the run.  Michael Loughlin and Joe McGriskin netted the all important goals towards the end of the game to seal victory for the Manorhamilton men.  They play Naomh Eoin this wednesday at 7pm.

Lory Meagher cup –

Connacht 40×20 Juvenile B Championship
The 2013 Connacht 40×20 Juvenile B Championship came to its conclusion on Saturday with the finals played in Ballaghadereen and Charlestowm. Cormac Scollan was the only Leitrim competitor to reach the finals and he came away with the Boys u11 title defeating Niall Flemming of Mayo on a scoreline of 15-6, 15-10. In a very entertaining match with some great rallies and kill shots Scollan eased to victory to take the first game. The second game was much tighter early on with both players swapping scores, but once Scollan took the lead he never relinquished it. Flemming put up a real battle but midway through the game Scollan took control and put enough daylight between them to secure a great victory. On his route to the final he defeated Conor Finn of Sligo 15-10, 15-12 in the quarter final and Colm Cunningham Galway 15-6, 15-2 in the semi-final.

Leitrim had a total of 11 competitors taking part in the championship including: Fergal McLoughlin and James Wrynn u11 Doubles, Eoin McLoughlin u12, Robert Maguire u13, David Wrynn u14, Aaron McLoughlin u15, James Maguire and Conor McKeon u15 Doubles Tony Simms u16 and  Mark Leddy u17. All players reached the semi-finals against a stronger Galway selection with Mark Leddy losing out to Eamon OMaoilchianain in the u17 Final.

The annual Williamstown One-Wall Tournament takes place this year on May 24th – 26th in Williamstown HC, Galway.

Last Saturday evening in Ballyhaunis a very strong Mayo team dominated from the beginning and Leitrim struggled for long periods in the game.

Mayo got off to a flying start and had scored 8 points in the first 22 minutes, Liam Irwin for Mayo scored a goal and a point in this period while Padraig Pendergast hit over twice with Liam Noone (free) and Michael Plunkett adding a point each.

It was in the 24th minute before Leitrim eventually got their first score with a point from Michael Clancy but Mayo went on to increase their lead with points from Plunkett, Ronan Carolan and Irwin (free) to put the home-side ahead by 1-8 to 0-1 at half time.

Three minutes into the second half Mayo increased their lead with a point from Ronan Carolan which was soon followed by a free scored by Conor Gaffney giving Leitrim their 2nd point in the game. Leitrim were unfortunate not to have scored a goal by sub Daire Farrell who drove a 38th minute goal chance wide. Two minutes later Leitrim scored their third point in the game by Shane McGowan and after that Mayo took complete control for the last 20 minutes of the game when hitting four points without reply. Pendergast added two points, sub Cian Hanley getting one and a free scored by Liam Irwin in the 58th minute.

Next Saturday Leitrim will face table leaders Galway in Pairc Sean MacDiarmad in their last game in the Connacht Minor League Campaign. This will be a tough game for them as I am sure confidence is low after the game last Saturday so it would be great and very much appreciated if you would come out and get behind the team so we can put it up to Galway.

Connacht Táin league –
In the Connacht Tain league Carrick hurling looked like they could reach the semi final by beating Bellmullet last Friday night but unfortunately in the dying seconds of the game Belmullet were given a life line when they were awarded a dubious penalty.  The final score saw Carrick going down by a point on a scoreline of 0.11 to 1.09.  Cluainin Iomaint were waiting on this scoreline with bated breath and were more than happy with this result as a win in their game would have sealed the semi final spot for them on Scóring difference.  Unfortunately Western Gaels could not field a team last Saturday and at the time of going to print it looks like Western Gaels will be awarding Cluainin a walk over which means that Cluainin, Carrick and Belmullet will be level on points. If a walk over is given then Scóring difference will not come into play and a three way play off will determine who plays against Castlebar Mitchels in the semi final.  In the other group of the Tain league Ballinamore were unable to play Sylane.

Under 16 Sligo league –
Cluainin Iomaint under 16stravelled to Western Gaels in Sligo last wednesday and won on a scoreline of 3.13 to 1.02. Matthew Kerrigan, Andrew Loughlin, Cian Killalea and captain Kieran McPartland worked hard in defence while Christopher Ferguson and Stephen Loughlin commanded midfield Scóring 1.03 between them. Martin Feeney, Damon Beattie, Fergus Munday and Luke Sheirdan created a lot of trouble in the forwards. Damon Beattie finished the match Scóring a massive 1.07. Daithi Cummins and Ferghal Ryan made their debuts for the hurlers and showed great promise. Team and scorers – Peter Poniard, Matthew Kerrigan, Andrew Loughlin, Cian Killalea, Kiernan McPartland (Cpatain) (0.01), Christopher Ferguson (0.02), Stephen Loughlin (1.01), Martin Feeney (0.02), Damon Beattie (1.07) Luke Sheirdan (1.00), Fergus Munday (0.01), Daithi Cummins, Ferghal Rooney.

Cluainin Iomaint under 16s play Coolera/Strandhill this Wednesday at 6.30pm at Ransboro pitch in Round 2 of the Sligo League.

An incredible night for Leitrim in the Connacht Scór Finals in St Marys Hall Carrick on Shannon on Saturday. Leitrim topped the polls of titles on the night by winning 5 of the 8 events. This brings our Connacht titles to 110 in Scór since it started in 1970. Leitrim also retained the Cormac MacGilla cup which was won in recognition of our success, the cup has never been outside of Leitrim since it was introduced to the competition, it was presented to Rúnai Maura Mulvey by Ailbhe McGill.

St Marys were first to the stage in Rince Foirne and won the Figure Dance on home ground, beating the 8 ladies from Kilglass, Co Roscommon. This is the clubs 2nd trip in a row to the All-Ireland, having won it for the first time in 2012 and they will be hoping to go the extra mile and bring the title back to Leitrim.

Aisling Maxwell from Ballinamore gave a fabulous performance in solo singing but Norrie Kane of Abbeyknockmoy took the title back to Galway.

Drumkeerin represented Leitrim in Instrumental Music, they gave a flawless foot tapping performance but unfortunately St Farnans of Sligo were announced the winners.

Brendan Brennan from Sean OHeslins club went down a treat in RecitationÓgiving all in the crowd a very entertaining piece and clinched his Connacht medal on his fabulous performance.

An unfortunate loss for the St Marys Ballad group who gave yet another outstanding All-Ireland standard performance, but yet were pipped to the post by our Roscommon neighbours. Having made it to the All Ireland on 2 separate occasions in the last 5 years, disbelief was felt among the Leitrim supporters when the adjudicators results were read out and it was not to be for this exceptional group.

It wasnt the night either for our 2012 All Ireland champs Bornacoola in the Question Time as the final marks were totted up, Clann Na nGael of Roscommon were the quiz winners.

The fantastic and witty Seán OHeslins won the Novelty Act. Having last won the All-lreland in 2009 they will be hoping for success again in Derry.

Leona Reynolds from Aughnasheelin competed in Rince Sean-Os, a very well executed performance, mixing the traditional old style steps with some very nice quirky modern clicks and lifts and successfully won the title.

Set Dancing was won by the fabulous young Fenagh team, a fine performance and worthy winners.
