Congratulations to Leitrim Gaels who were crowned GWP Leitrim Junior A Football Champions for 2012 in Cloone today when they defeated Gortletteragh in a hugely entertaining final on a scoreline of 1-14 to 1-11.

The success of one of our long established clubs, Gortletteragh, in capturing the Intermediate Championship this year and moving on to Senior status left a vacancy to be filled in next years Intermediate Championship.  Remarkably, Gortletteragh themselves were hoping to fill the void but that was not to be as one of our youngest clubs, Leitrim Gaels will now fill the void.  Judging on todays performance they will not be found wanting in next years Intermediate Championship.

Leitrim Gaels now represent Leitrim in the AIB Connacht Club Junior Football Championship where they meet the Galway champions next weekend (venue TBC).

We take this opportunity to again congratulate them on winning their first major trophy since they were formed in 1997 and wish them the very best of luck on the road in Connacht.

The eagerly awaited Junior A Championship Final takes place this Sunday at 3pm in Cloone with Leitrim Gaels and Gortletteragh meeting in the decider.

Both teams will be hoping to take the honours and move up to the Intermediate ranks in 2013.  A huge crowd is expected at the Cloone venue and we wish both teams the best of luck on the day.

Both teams were undefeated in the group stages and had comprehensive wins in their quarter and semi final games.  Gortletteragh will be hoping to add to their 2012 Intermediate Championship success and win the Junior A title for the second time in their history having last won it in 2000 while for Leitrim Gaels they will be hoping to win the title for the first time since their club was formed in 1997.

Clubs are invited to send two representatives to a Drug and Alcohol Awareness training event taking place in Pairc Sean MacDiarmada on this Monday, October 15th, at 7.30pm.

This training will provide information about awareness and education, developing a policy for your club, and guidelines on how to manÓge alcohol or drug related incidents in line with best practise.

The GAA’s Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) programme has been up and running for six years. Under the GAA’s Strategic Vision and Action Plan, 2009-2015, every club in the country has been charged with having an active ASAP officer in place, and with adopting a club Drug and Alcohol Policy. (A copy of the GAA’s Sample Club Drug and Alcohol policy will be available on the night.)

The evening will be of particular benefit to your club ASAP officer but will also be very useful to anyone working with juvenile teams, and in particular your club’s Coaching Officer. If your club does not have an ASAP officer in place please make sure someone interested in taking on the role attends. You will leave with a wide understanding of what the role of a club ASAP officer entails, how to address issues relating to drug and alcohol misuse in a GAA club, and the support networks that are in place locally in Leitrim.

Colin Regan will facilitate this training with Leitrim’s ASAP Officers Marie McGovern and Kevin McGill, in conjunction with Grainne Duignan of the local Leitrim Foróige office. Please email Marie McGovern at mmcgovern@eircom.ie by Friday, October 12th, to book your place on the night and to indicate how many from your club will attend.
