The Fenagh Cup nestles in Kinlough
Melvin Gaels have taken up the mantle of Leitrim Senior Champions after a comprehensive victory in the Connacht Gold County Final on Sunday last in Páirc Seán MacDiarmada. Their neighbours, Glencar/Manorhamilton, the four in a row title holders, went into the game as slight favourites, but almost from the throw-in, there was a sense of inevitability about the result.
The Gaels found the form they have been showing all year – indeed from their capturing of the GWP Intermediate title last October – right from the start and had the champions back-pedalling for most of the game. The extra pressure of going for a Leitrim record of five Senior Championships in a row probably did have an effect on the Glencar/Manor performance, as their team never really showed the form that had made the club the kingpins of Leitrim over the past four years.
There is no doubt that Melvin Gaels were worthy winners, worthy champions, playing an attractive brand of fast-flowing football from veteranÓgoalkeeper Gareth Phelan, right through a strong spine of full back Fabian McMorrow; Man of the Match, centre half back, Paul Brennan; midfielders Stephen McGurrin and Brendan Brennan; Emlyn Mulligan on the forty and full forward James Phelan and also down both wings, to corner forward and team captain David McSharry. The bench was strong too, as was proven when the captain had to be replaced, having suffered a severe leg injury and when others were called into the fray, including another team veteran, Colin Regan, who, no doubt, was given the task of steadying the ship for the last few tense minutes.
It was very much a team effort for the Gaels and the full panel, team Manager Billy Gavigan, selectors Liam Gilmartin and Aiden McGurran, the club officials and their army of blue and white supporters all shared in the victory.
In honouring Melvin Gaels on their seventh Senior Championship success, we should also acknowledge Glencar/Manorhamilton, very worthy county champions for the past four years and very dignified ambassadors for Leitrim.
Now the whole county will get behind the Gaels as they take on the Roscommon champions in the Connacht Club Championship on Sunday October 28th, in the first step on the road to capturing the Shane McGettigan Cup.
While the senior final did have plenty of untidy play and even a lack of tension at times, not so the minor final, where Fenagh Gortletteragh and St. Manchan’s played out a real thriller. St. Manchan’s clawed their way back into the game after being nine points behind and every single player that saw action deserves our thanks for keeping the spectators on tenterhooks all the way to the dying seconds of injury time.
The replay will be eagerly awaited. Well done to both teams and their management and officials.

Junior A Championship Final
Club FootballThe eagerly awaited Junior A Championship Final takes place this Sunday at 3pm in Cloone with Leitrim Gaels and Gortletteragh meeting in the decider.
Both teams will be hoping to take the honours and move up to the Intermediate ranks in 2013. A huge crowd is expected at the Cloone venue and we wish both teams the best of luck on the day.
Both teams were undefeated in the group stages and had comprehensive wins in their quarter and semi final games. Gortletteragh will be hoping to add to their 2012 Intermediate Championship success and win the Junior A title for the second time in their history having last won it in 2000 while for Leitrim Gaels they will be hoping to win the title for the first time since their club was formed in 1997.

Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training Event
DevelopmentClubs are invited to send two representatives to a Drug and Alcohol Awareness training event taking place in Pairc Sean MacDiarmada on this Monday, October 15th, at 7.30pm.
This training will provide information about awareness and education, developing a policy for your club, and guidelines on how to manÓge alcohol or drug related incidents in line with best practise.
The GAA’s Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) programme has been up and running for six years. Under the GAA’s Strategic Vision and Action Plan, 2009-2015, every club in the country has been charged with having an active ASAP officer in place, and with adopting a club Drug and Alcohol Policy. (A copy of the GAA’s Sample Club Drug and Alcohol policy will be available on the night.)
The evening will be of particular benefit to your club ASAP officer but will also be very useful to anyone working with juvenile teams, and in particular your club’s Coaching Officer. If your club does not have an ASAP officer in place please make sure someone interested in taking on the role attends. You will leave with a wide understanding of what the role of a club ASAP officer entails, how to address issues relating to drug and alcohol misuse in a GAA club, and the support networks that are in place locally in Leitrim.
Colin Regan will facilitate this training with Leitrim’s ASAP Officers Marie McGovern and Kevin McGill, in conjunction with Grainne Duignan of the local Leitrim Foróige office. Please email Marie McGovern at mmcgovern@eircom.ie by Friday, October 12th, to book your place on the night and to indicate how many from your club will attend.

GAA Football Provincial Championship Draws 2013
County FootballThe draw has taken play for the four GAA Football provincial championship draws for 2013. The four draws took place at Croke Park on Thursday evening, and was broadcast live on RTÉ 2 television.
All-Ireland champions Donegal have been handed a very difficult draw in Ulster. They will face Tyrone in the quarter-final, and if they come through that game, either Down or Derry will await in the semi-final.

In Munster, heavyweights Cork and Kerry are on opposite sides of the draw, while the Leinster draw has produced a few very interesting ties. Dublin will play the winners of Westmeath and Carlow in the quarter-finals, while Meath will take on either Wicklow or Longford in the last eight. See below for full details of Connacht draw.
