WEXFORD V LEITRIM – 2 ALL AT THIS STAGE.

Wexford lost to Laois in the last round in Portlaoise on a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-8. Laois are everybody’s favourites to get promoted so the Wexford performance was a good one away from home. At home they will be very difficult to beat. Wexford consider themselves to be a Division 3 team.

Wexford v Leitrim is never easy. It is seven years (2016) since Leitrim last played Wexford in Wexford.

Leitrim v Wexford 20th March 2022- Final Score -Leitrim 3-9 Wexford 1-11.

The last few meetings between both counties have been ding dong affairs. Last year in Carrick on Shannon substitute Conor Cullen fired to the visitor’s net just before the death. A goal by Darragh Rooney  in the first  half put Leitrim in the driving seat and they lead by 1 –04 to O-04 at the break. Leitrim maintained a slight edge in the early second half proceedings but Wexford levelled twice and edged ahead with points by Byrne and Shanley. However, a 48th minute Ryan O’Rourke goal for Leitrim and Cullen’s goal near the end gave Leitrim a bigger win than looked likely to happen for long periods in the game.

Due to covid in 2021 Wexford and Leitrim did not play each other as Leitrim played in a group of Antrim Sligo and Louth, and in 2020 Leitrim played in Division 3 and they did not meet.

In 2019 Leitrim beat Wexford in Carrick on Shannon by 3-15 to 0-11 and got promoted under Terry Hyland’s management.

In 2018 it was Wexford’s turn to play in Division 3 and we did not play each other.

In 2017 Wexford beat Leitrim in Carrick on Shannon on a scoreline of 0-16 to 0-14 and Wexford got promoted that year.

It is seven years ago (2016) since Wexford had home advantage against Leitrim and Wexford came out on top on a scoreline of 0-14 to 1-10 against a Shane Ward managed Leitrim team. The sides were deadlocked as the game entered the closing minutes, but Donal Shanley (Wexford) pointed a controversial game-winning free in additional time.

Four  players from 2016 are still on the Leitrim panel, Donal Wrynn, Shane Quinn, Nevin O Donnell and Emlyn Mulligan. In  the 2016  game Nevin O Donnell scored 0-03 , Nevin is sub goalie on the current panel and Shane Quinn scored 1-01 from the left half back position.

Since 2016 Leitrim have played Wexford four times ( 2016,2017,2019 and 2022) winning two and losing two. Who will win next Sunday, that is the question?.

It won’t be easy and will be close but with a bit of luck on our side we will bring home a victory.

Leitrim Versus London Match Report

Match Report – Leitrim v London 05/02/2023

London is a special place for me. In 1982  (41 years ago)  I was on the first Leitrim team to play London in London in the Connacht Championship. We won 1-13 to 0-4. In the intervening years London have improved dramatically and yesterday in London I was hugely impressed with London’s performance. Make no mistake about it this game went right to the wire and had the huge crowd on the edge of their seats in what was a championship atmosphere.

In the first half London were finding it easier to get into scoring positions and kicked a number of bad wides. Leitrim were struggling to break down the London defence and were more economical and the first half ended 0-6 to 0-3 in Leitrim’s favour undeservedly so.

The second half went one way then the other  and when Keith Beirne scored a goal it looked comfortable at 1-7 to 0-5. Another goal from Donal Wrynn followed and at 2-9 to 0-7 it looked done and dusted with fifteen minutes of normal time to go. When London had Henry Walsh red carded in the 56th minute it appeared Leitrim’s job was done. With London really piling on the pressure and scoring five points in a row the game exploded in the 65th minute when London scored a goal from a loose ball to bring the score to 2-10 to 1-13.  Three points in it as we approached the last five minutes it was squeaky bum time. Leitrim worked the ball up the field past the London defence line  and within the minute Tom Prior got the goal that would make the game safe notwithstanding a few anxious moments before the final whistle.

The match was a serious test for the Leitrim team. Travelling by bus, going through airports, getting buses when you arrive and trying to ensure it does not affect performance is really hard to do. That Leitrim won against a serious London team and will do wonders for the players confidence. Certainly London scoring five points  in a row with a man down at a crucial time in the match needs examination. London will win a few matches at home in London and could impact on the final league placings for a few teams.  The Leitrim team are a unit and their preparation is very professional under Andy and his management team. In all the circumstances it was a great victory.

London Calling

As Leitrim play London this coming Sunday the 5th of February, there will be a large gathering of supporters from both home and away in Ruislip.   Over the last month over a thousand Leitrim people have been taking part in the  #50mileschallenge  to raise much needed funds for both Leitrim GAA and Leitrim LGFA. There has been plenty of activity on social media with loads of shared stories and memories.   Everyone taking part is sporting a Leitrim beanie which are getting a great reaction.   We are asking fans in London who have been taking part or wish to be associated with the initiative to attend at the side of the McGovern stand on the club house side for a photo opportunity about 20 mins before the game.    Entry is free to the game & don’t forget your hat and there will be a number of beanie hats available for supporters.  If you wish to support the effort you can donate via the link below.

Coiste Chontae Liatroma Meeting – How the Motions Fared

The first meeting of Coiste Chontae Liatroma 2023 took place at Avant Money Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada last night and dealt with the competition motions that were referred forward from the Convention Clár in December. How the motions were received is outlined below:

Competition Structural Regulations (Adult) – Coiste Chontae Liatroma

Motion 1

2023 Junior A Football Championship (8 Teams)

Two groups of 4 with each team playing each other in round-robin series. Top Team in each group qualifies for the Semi-final, second and third placed teams play each other 2 v 3 and 3 v 2 across the respective groups. Semi Final Draw to ensure that the top placed teams avoid each other at this stage. Winner of Junior A Football Championship promoted to IFC 2024. The bottom-placed team in each group to play each other in the relegation final with the defeated team to be relegated.

Pot A   2022 Defeated Finalist plus 2022 IFC Relegated Team. (2 Teams)

Pot B   2022 Beaten Semi-Finalists (2 Teams)

Pot C   2022 Beaten Quarter Finalists (2 Teams)

Two groups of 4, inclusive of the three relegated teams from the JFC A 2022, and the five remaining teams that competed in JFC B 2022, with each team playing each other in round-robin series. Top two teams in each group will play semi-finals (1 v 2 and 2 v 1). Winner of Junior B Football Championship promoted to JFC A 2024. The bottom-placed team in each group to play each other in the relegation final with the defeated team to be relegated to Junior C Football Championship 2024. There shall no seeding in this draw.

Junior C Football Championship 2023 (8 Teams)

Two groups of 4, inclusive of the two relegated teams from the 2022 Junior B Championship, the 2022 Junior C Football Championship winners, plus any additional teams that are eligible and participating in 2022. Top two teams in each group will play semi-finals (1 v 2 and 2 v 1). In the event of there being six or nine teams these will be placed in groups of 3 teams each, if seven teams these are placed in groups of four and three respectively. In a three group scenario, semi-finalists will comprise the top team in each group and the best placed runner up across the three groups. No two teams from the same group to meet in semi-final. Winners of JFC C to be promoted to JFC B 2024. There shall no seeding in this draw.

Rule 6.21 TO 2022 to apply in determining final group placings in each of the above championships.

 Motion 1

That ‘Winner on Day’ regulations no longer apply to all Senior, Intermediate and Junior A Football Championship games. In the event of a drawn game, extra time will take place, and if still drawn the game shall be replayed. In the event of the game ending level at end of extra time on 2nd day, ‘Winner on Day’ scenario would then come into play. All finals shall go to replay.

In the event of knockout championship games up to the Senior or Intermediate Football Championship Final ending level at full time they will be subject to extra time. This will involve the playing of two periods of

extra-time of ten minutes each. If the teams are still level a replay will be required. The replay to be played midweek following the drawn fixture. For the replayed fixture ‘Winner on Day’ scenario will apply.

This will involve the playing of two periods of extra-time of ten minutes each. If teams are still level the tie will be decided by the taking of five penalty kicks each, and sudden death if also required. All the foregoing to be in accordance with what was approved by Árd Comhairle on January 19th 2019.

In the Senior, Intermediate and Junior A Championship; the ‘Winner on Day’ format should not apply to Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Finals.   At Quarter-Final and Semi-Final stage, a replay if required shall be fixed for a date at the discretion of the CCC before the following Wednesday with ‘Winner on Day’ format to be used.  In the event of a draw in the final of any of the three grades, a replay date to be fixed at the discretion of the CCC with finish on the day format to be used.

The team who finishes in first position of ACL Div 1, 2 & 3 and Res Div 1, 2 & 3 shall be granted home advantage in the League Final. This is subject to the club having a home venue that has an enclosed playing area with a secure perimeter fence.  In the event of a club whose pitch is currently closed, or does not have a securely enclosed playing area as outlined above, it will have the option of nominating an alternative venue as its home venue for the final within the county, subject to having gained permission from both the club to nominate the venue and ultimate CCC approval.  In the event of no pitch being made available to that Club, CCC will retain the authority to decide a venue.

The late James McGovern, Drumcondra, Dublin and Aughavas, County Leitrim.

Leitrim GAA is very saddened to learn of the death of the late James McGovern, formerly of Aughavas, County Leitrim. The McGovern Family has been imbued in the fortunes of Leitrim GAA over a period of time that has been continuous since the glory days of the early 1990s. They first came to prominence by agreeing to become the sponsors of the Leitrim Senior Football team in the early days of sponsorship names being allowed on jerseys, as the team’s rise to prominence hit a high with the capturing of the Connacht SFC title in 1994. A multiplicity of images that continue to be reproduced over the decades since are ingrained in the consciousness, with ‘McGovern Aughavas’ forever associated with that glorious era. James was the central figure in this deal at that time.

Beyond that, the McGoverns have continued their association with Leitrim GAA, the main stand in Avant Money Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada renamed the McGovern Aughavas Stand in the late noughties and more recently, the naming rights of the Leitrim GAA McGovern Aughavas Centre of Excellence are attributed to the generosity of James’s brother, Tony McGovern, based in London.

Of course, James and Family have not forgotten their more local roots and for many of Aughavas’s most successful recent years, particularly around their Leitrim SFC success of 2000, the name McGovern found a most prominent and proud placement on the front of their native jerseys.

Leitrim GAA will always be most appreciative of the contribution of James McGovern to Leitrim GAA. We know we made him proud throughout that glorious era of the early to mid-1990s.

James McGovern is deeply regretted by his wife Peggy, children Aidan, Vera, Nuala, Andy and Eileen, daughters-in-law Christina and Louise, sons-in-law Willie, Tristan and Ciarán, grandchildren Sean, Nikita, Karla, Henry, Leo, Bill, Pete, Jodi, Séamus, Tómas, Euan, Grace, Pierce and Charlie, brothers Tom, Gerry and Tony, in-laws, extended family, friends and neighbours. He will be laid to rest in Dardistown Cemetery, following 11.30am funeral mass at St Vincent de Paul Church, Marino, on Wednesday morning.

The Late Dessie Kieran, Main Street, Ballinamore, Co Leitrim.

Dessie Kieran, Ballinamore Seán O’Heslins RIP

The death has occurred of Dessie Kieran, one of the stalwarts of Ballinamore Seán O’Heslin’s since his playing days in the late 1940s and through the 1950s. Dessie was the goalkeeper on the famous Ballinamore team which won the 1956 Senior Championship, the club’s first at the time, after what seemed an eternity from 1939. That victory was the highlight of Dessie’s generation and was spoken about with pride ever after. Pictured below is a photo of the Ballinamore team of 1956 with Dessie third from the right in the back row.

While still a player, Dessie was very involved in the administration of the club along with his brother, the late Brendan. Between them, they were central to the running of the club in the 1950s and 1960s. Dessie was club Treasurer from 1953-1955 and again in 1958. He was also Assistant Treasurer from 1964-1968. He was a mine of information on anything to do with the club, and indeed the town, and a visit to the chemist shop run by himself and his wife, Sheelah, would yield the answers to many questions.

Dessie was particularly proud to see his son Paul play a central role in Leitrim’s great Connacht Senior Championship win in 1994 and in Ballinamore’s Senior title wins in the 1980s and 1990.

The club expresses sympathy to Dessie’s wife Sheelah and sons Paul, John and Mark and the extended family. Reposing at Smith’s Funeral Home, High St. Ballinamore N41 TD62 on Wednesday evening from 6pm until 8pm. Funeral Mass in St. Patrick’s Church, Ballinamore on Thursday at 12 noon followed by burial in Oughteragh cemetery, Ballinamore.
