Leitrim Ladies Vs Westmeath Replay

The first thing noticed by the Leitrim players upon taking to the pitch last Saturday evening was the amount of Leitrim support that had travelled to Emmet Park on Saturday evening. There was a wonderful array of Leitrim Flags, Banners and Jerseys surrounding the grounds and the team would like to sincerely thank all the supporters and we hope to see you all again when the Championship begins in June.

We were on the losing end of the game down by 4 points at the final whistle after going in at half time leading by a point. The second half did just not go our way marred by stoppages and injuries to both teams. Its onwards and upwards though as things will go back to normal and training starts in earnest for the championship. We had a wonderful League campaign which will truely stand to us in the Intermediate Championship.

Well done to the Westmeath Team and Management on the win and the best of luck to them next year in Division 2 and in their Championship campaign. Some photographs from the final are available here.

Leitrim Ladies News

On another note our wonderful Full Forward Ms Aine Tighe jets off to Toronto on Wednesday morning – she is travelling to play with the All Star team – we wish her a safe journey and dont forget to come home to us!

All was not lost though last weekend as we found out that five of our team were selected on the Division 3 Team of the League. The team is voted on by the team Managers of all teams in the league. Starting at the back receiveing an award tonight at a Gala Dinner in Croke Park is Goalie Michelle Guckian (St Marys), Full Back Enya McWeeney (St Marys), Wing Back Kirby Gilgunn (Sean OHeslins), Midfielder Sinead Fowley (Dromahair) and Full Forward Aine Tighe (Kiltubrid). A fanastic achievement for the five Ladies and all the team. As always you do your families, team mates, Clubs, County and parishes proud!

U14 Leitrim Ladies

Leitrim U14 Ladies claimed the Connacht B title in fine style with a comprehensive victory over Galway in Charlestown on Sunday last. It was an outstanding team performance where so many Leitrim players were in contention for Player of the Match.  Leitrim lined out without regular goalkeeper Kiara Masterson who got injured in a club game during the week.  From the first whistle Leitrim attacked with pace and intelligence, and the back line worked liked demons to deny Galway any Scóring opportunities.  The forwards used the wide-open spaces of Charlestown pitch to great effect with captain Dearbhaile Beirne and Carla LeGuen leading the way. Leitrim had most of the possession early on but a number of Scóring chances went a begging but Carla LeGuenÓgot the first point of the game, thenÓgalway scored from the penalty spot. But that did not deter the Leitrim girls and the midfield duo of Emma Quinn and Eilish O’Dowd were controlling midfield and gave good quality ball into the forwards where the woodwork denied them on 3 occasions but Leitrim transferred their dominance onto the scoreboard and by half time lead by 5-05 to 1-02

A resurgent Galway took the game to Leitrim early in the second half but the defence led by Eimhin Quinn and Megan O’Rourke battened down the hatches. Galway came back to within 11 points with excellent play form Leanne Coen and RoisinÓgodwin. But goals from Dearbhaile Beirne, Carla LeGuen and Emma Quinn finished of the tie. Carla LeGuen struck a brilliant 35m free from the left to cap off a brilliant performance.

Captain Dearbhaile Beirne collected the trophy for the Champions and Eilish O’Dowd was Player of the Match. Leitrim now play the Ulster Champions on June 9th in the All Ireland semi final.

Team:
Aisling Gill, Kathy McLoughlin, Cathy Forde, Eimhin Quinn, Elise Bruen, Megan O’Rourke, Caroline Doherty, Emma Quinn, Eilish O’Dowd, Dara Morahan, Emma McGovern, Dearbhaile Beirne, Nicole McGarry, Carla LeGuen, Aine Flood.
Subs
Rebecca Rooney, Aoife Byrne, Cait Connaughton, Niamh Geogheghan and Sinead O’Neill.

U16 Leitrim Ladies

It has been agreed that Leitrim U16 Ladies will play Mayo at 3pm on Saturday in Leitrim Village. Best of luck to the team and Management . It will be a busy day in Leitrim Ladies football.

Leitrim Titles For Martin and Aaron

The Leitrim Mens 40×20 Singles Senior and Junior  Finals were played in Drumshanbo on Sunday with Martin Raftery taking the senior title and Aaron Scollan winning the Junior Final.
Drumshanbos  Martin Raftery saw off the challenge of Fenaghs Danny Reilly on a score line of 21-9, 21-10 with the in-form Raftery giving a master class in serving and killing the ball keeping Reilly under immense pressure and unable to take control of either game.
The Junior Final was a different encounter between Drumshanbos Declan Lynch and Fenaghs Aaron Scollan with excellent serving and returning from both players. The first game had Declan Lynch in control with some brilliant power serves that Scollan simply couldnt counter. With some great rallies a very entertaining first game was taken by Declan Lynch 21-14. Aaron Scollan had serve for the second game which he made great use of racing into a 6-0 lead and went on to take the game 21-2. With the match gone to the tie-breaker Scollan again had serve having scored more aces and started  where he left off going 10 aces ahead before going on to take the game and match 21-5.
