Leitrim GAA wishes to offer its deepest sympathies to the family of the last Paddy McEneaney, Lurganboy, Manorhmilton, who passed to his eternal reward on Saturday, December 17th. The late Paddy, a native of Cavanaguillagh, Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan, has been very positively associated with the Glencar/Manorhamilton GAA Club over many decades and has held a number of prominent officer positions in the club during this time.
Our sympathies are extended to his wife Julia, his children Siobhán, Gerardine, Eibhlín, Dympna, Mary, Róisín, Patrick, Terence, Cathal and the extended members of the McEneaney family at this sad time. May he rest in peace.

Leitrim GAA are delighted to announce the appointment tonight of Karl Foley as the U17 Minor team Manager for 2023. Karl who lives in and is a native of Kilmore has huge coaching and managerial experience. Karl is a very experienced coach and manager, with spells at Clan na Gael, Carrickedmond, Kilmore, Shannon Gaels and in Leitrim with Leitrim Gaels and Annaduff. Karl also bring vast experience at the Minor Inter County age-group having managed and coached Roscommon Minors for 5 years and winning a Connacht title in that period. We would like to wish Karl the very best of luck in the role and look forward to announcing the remaining members of his backroom team very soon.
In a pioneering collaboration, the Leitrim Ladies Gaelic footballers have joined forces with Leitrim GAA in organising the next January 50 Mile Challenge, the third in the highly successful series.
The preparatory work has been underway for months, this time with the full involvement of the ladies organisation led by its Chairperson, Kathy Butler. It is believed to be the first such collaboration between the two organisations in the country and the Leitrim ladies will share in the funds raised so as to enhance their teams’ activities.
The lime green beanie hat is illustrated by Kathy Butler with the Leitrim Tourism logo on one side and the Leitrim GAA crest on the other. Last January the yellow beanie hat worn by participants was a familiar sight in the county enabling fellow participants to readily recognise each other.
All those who sign up as fundraisers will receive the new beanie hat in addition to a Leitrim GAA themed fundraising page. As before Leitrim County Council are the major sponsors of the Challenge and are working closely with the organisers to highlight county Leitrim during the campaign as a great place to live in, workin, relocate to, invest in and of course to visit and enjoy.
Last January one of the most successful promotions of the 50 mile challenge was the short Ambassador videos by personalities including Charlie McGettigan and Carole Coleman set against the county’s beautiful outdoor scenes. The 2022 collection of videos amassed almost 500,000 views. For the forthcoming challenge there will be nine Challenge Ambassadors who have recorded videos made by Brian Duignan of Carrick-on-Shannon and with the financial support of Leitrim County Council.
An exciting new initiative this year is the inclusion of a large number of prominent Companies who are getting behind the event as they encourage health & wellbeing through corporate participation. The participating companies come from all sectors and all corners of the county and surrounding areas. Leitrim County Council are running a Recruitment and Enterprise Expo in the Landmark Hotel on 27th January to align with the last week of the 50 Miles challenge. A large number of high profile companies will be participating in this Expo.
Participation in the challenge is open to all community based organisations, government departments and local groups who are more than welcome to harness the uplifting energy that this event offers and to encourage members to get out and about for the month. All participants are encouraged to share their activity on social media and in the very engaging Facebook group – regular exercise & social participation is vital for physical and mental health.
Globally the Leitrim diaspora will be out in force with us this January and we are delighted to announce a new group in London to compliment our existing group in New York. The London group is headed up by ex Leitrim footballer David O’Connor who hails from Dromod. Last year we had participation and donations from 65 countries and for January we welcome more groups and individual participants as the Leitrim brand spreads globally.
This event aims to give our beautiful county a national & global focus for the month of January as a wonderful place to explore, experience and enjoy as you live in, work in or relocate to.
The formal launch of the Leitrim January 50 Mile Challenge is set for the Lough Rynn Castle Hotel on the evening of Thursday, December 8.

Leitrim GAA would like to be associated with messages of sympathy, following the passing of the late Michael O Rourke, Riverdale, New York and formerly of Carrigallen, County Leitrim.
Michael Ó Rourke loved the hills of Druminchin, the fields, the whins, the buchalláns and the neighbours that his nephew Séamus wrote about so emotionally in his STANDING in GAPS memoir.
Michael walked every inch of these fields before emigrating to the United States, but in reality, he never left home. Like so many other Irish in New York he became immersed in his new surroundings and a committed member of his community, while at the same time keeping up to date with events back in Drumshangore, Drumeela, Carrigallen and Leitrim. After emigrating in 1958 the news came to the Big Apple through family letters and the weekly Leitrim Observer, but Michael in recent years became a whiz kid on mobiles, WhatsApp and various social media sites that others his age did simply not explore, but he wanted to be the first with the news from Leitrim.
The GAA was always part of Michael’s life, from his playing days with Drumeela Harps, Drumreilly, Carrigallen and Aughawillan, as a Leitrim referee to lining out in Gaelic Park or being a regular along the sideline every Sunday with his life long friends Mike Dillon and Larry Dolan.
His generous heart saw him financially support the Leitrim Club in New York, but also the Leitrim County Board and Leitrim teams back home. as well as Carrigallen GAA and its club grounds and also the Carrigallen/Aughavas St Joseph’s Ladies teams. As well as being a fan of football and hurling Michael had a special interest in Athletics and Cycling and enjoyed both well into his later years. He also had a keen interest in amateur Drama, nurtured through being on stage with people like Mickey O’Brien and Con Reilly in the Drumeela Drama Troupe in venues like Fargie’s Shed or in Doogra Hall. He would have found his years in the Fordham Dramatic Club a bit more up-market.
Michael served in various official positions with the Leitrim Society New York, including President and was always at the forefront of promoting Leitrim and its people. He was honoured on various occasions for his contribution to Irish culture, but the greatest satisfaction he got was from simply doing his bit to help others.
Now his passing will evoke many memories of a great New York and a great Leitrim man. Sincere sympathy to his family and to all the O’Rourke family in Drumshangore and in Manorhamilton.

The Leitrim GAA Review Committee, under the Chairmanship of Iar-Uachtarán Liam Ó Neill are currently conducting an in-depth review of various aspects of our activities, to help the county better plan for the years ahead and help us face the many challenges that are likely to arise. The review is now entering its concluding stages and having spoken with many groups and clubs in the county the review group is now conducting a public survey to seek the opinions of any supporters or interested parties who may not already have had an opportunity to feed into the process. You may have attended an event earlier this year in Dublin regarding the proposed Cancer Centre of Excellence for the West and Northwest of Ireland and the fact that it has been included in the National Development Plan 2021 – 2030.
We are delighted to share with you that the Strategic Assessment Report (SAR) for the Cancer Centre on the UHG Galway hospital campus has now been completed. This is an essential part of the process for this pivotal health project; and the next step is for the HSE, Department of Health and Government to review and approve this submission and fully commit to the project. Once this happens a design team can be appointed and the Cancer Care Centre for the people of the West of Ireland will become a welcome reality.
An architectural model of potential infrastructural options for the Cancer Centre and associated facilities will also be presented.
Join us for an evening event on the 17th November 2022 at 7.30pm at the Salthill hotel, Galway to learn more about this welcome development to Fight and Cure Cancer.

Bricks were bought by people remembering family or friends who had passed, or acknowledging and celebrating family and friends both at home and abroad. Some people just wanted to express their pride of the home place, their townland or their home clubs..
People buying a brick in the wall are not only supporting Leitrim GAA but according to Siobhan Doyle, a cultural historian who works in the National Museum the Leitrimwall is one of 100 objects which acts as a signpost to significant moments in GAA history.
