Leitrim 1-04        Roscommon 0-15Â
Leitrim minors were outclassed by a very strong Roscommon team in Pairc Sean MacDirarmada last Saturday evening. Leitrim got the first point of the game by StephenÓgilheaney who took the point well after good work from Niall Brady on nine minutes, but unfortunately we did not see Leitrim score again until 15 minutes into the second half but by then Roscommon had taken control of the game and had scored ten points. At half time Roscommon had a seven point lead but it could have been more but for Brendan Flynn, Leitrim’s keeper you had a very strong game and pulled of some great saves.
In the second half Leitrim scored a lovely goal by Felim McHugh after a long ball by Nicholas Moore and Niall Brady who had a good game scored three points but the game was very one sided as Roscommon scored a futher seven points in the second half. Roscommon had an impressive win and the final score was Leitrim 1-04, Roscommon 0-15.
It’s going to be hard for Manager Mark Heslin and his team to dust them down and get them ready for next Saturdays game against Longford but this is a young team with very good players and if they start believing in themselves we will have every chance of winning next Saturday.                  Â

Leitrim Minor Championship
LadiesLeitrim Minor Championship:
The John Miller Minor Connacht Championship began last Saturday evening with the meeting of Leitrim and Galway in Leitrim village. The game began positive with Leitrim making use of a great pass from Ciara Mcweeney to Niamh Tighe and onto Shauna Clancy but Clancy unfortunately putting the ball wide in the opening few minutes. Galway were quick to respond and Galway Captain ShaunÓgh Jaskson scored a point from play. Shortly after that Leitrim were awarded a free which was taken by Ann Marie Gallagher again this went just short of the post. Leitrim just missed a goal shortly after that Shauna Clancy just missing after a great pass for Ciara McWeeney and Niamh Tighe. Then followed another Leitrim wide and thankfully Ann Marie Gallagher got another score from a free. Galway were soon to dominate but not before Leitrim defence put serious pressure on the Galway forward line. Galway had three wides thanks to great pressure from Leitrim’s Patricia Forde, Grainne O’Malley and Ciara Gaffney. Goalkeeper Shauna McLoughlin who is also an excellent player out the field made several excellent saves but unfortunately despite the best efforts of all the players on the field Galway managed a scoreline of 8-17 with Leitrim Scóring 0-6.
The Leitrim team was as follows:
Shauna McLoughlin, Patricia Forde, Grainne O’Malley, Ciara Gaffney, Emer Feely, Orlaith Heslin, Shauna McGrath, Ann Marie Gallagher, Ciara McWeeney, Niamh Feely (Captain), Niamh Tighe, Michaelaigh Nolan, Aoibheann Curran, Shauna Clancy and Claire Rowley subs: Kate Byrne, Grainne Donogan, Aisling Maguire, Cliodhna Reynolds (for N Feely), Sinead Sorohan (for O Heslin), Shauna Bohan, Tara Fitzpatrick (for A Curran), Sorcha Flanagan, Meabh Gleeson (for M Nolan), Caoimhe Quinn (for E Feehily), Shannon O’Grady, Michelle McNama and Ciara Maguire.

Boylan to hot for Murtagh in Ocean FM Handball final
HandballBoylan to hot for Murtagh in Ocean FM Handball final by Michael McGee
Leitrim’s Francis Boylan created a little piece of handball history when he became the inaugural Ocean FM Handball champion for 2012. The final was played in the Collooney handball court last Thursday evening. Leitrim’s Jamie Murray was the referee and he explained the rules to the two gladiators before the duo went into battle in the Collooney coliseum. Boylan the favourite made the early running and went into a big opening 8-1 lead. Murtagh found the going tough early on and his accuracy inÓgood positions let him down at crucial times. Boylan was the more economical when it came to score getting and he kept the scoreboard moving upwards. Murtagh as the opening game wore on came more into the contest but Boylan had a good cushion of a lead built up to let it slip. In an exciting finish BoylanÓgot three scores in a row to take the opening game by 15-9
Into the second game Boylan again went out in front. Murtagh adapted to the play much better in the second and certainly made the champion fight all the way. Mid way through the second game Murtagh hit a purple patch with 4 points in a row and Boylan looked decidedly shaky for the first time in the contest. Even his colleagues Michelle Gildea & Darragh Cox lent their support to the boy wonder Murtagh. Boylan looked rattled for the first time. The massive support in the Collooney cauldron erupted with a crescendo of noise Sligo, Sligo reverberating all over the handball court. This gave Murtagh great encouragement and he played his best handball in the final.
With the likes of Peter Heaney, Jamie Murray and Pat Wrynn Father of Donal Wrynn Leitrim’s Minor Singles All-Ireland championÓgiving their county hero Boylan every encouragement. The final was played like it was a World handball title at stake. Boylan’s determination was etched all over his face while Murtagh with the boyish good looks boosted by the huge Sligo support made in roads to the Leitrim’s man’s lead. Boylan managed to weather the Murtagh storm and like a bolt of lightning asserted control again. This time Boylan took a firm grip. In an exciting conclusion BoylanÓgot the all important winning scores to seal a thrilling victory by 15-12. Connacht Handball President Peter Heaney congratulated both players for an excellent exhibition of handball. The gallant David Murtagh was presented with the runners-up trophy by Peter Heaney. Leitrim’s Francis Boylan made it an historic double for Leitrim in the handball courts this week when he was presented with the Ocean FM Handball 2012 champion trophy. The event looks certain to become an annual event in the Sligo handball calendar.
