GAA Football Gold DVD featuring All-Ireland highlights from 1947-1959 is launched by the IFI Irish Film Archive at Croke Park by former champion footballer Minister Jimmy Deenihan, Dublin Manager Pat Gilroy, and current and former Dublin champion footballers including Bernard Brogan and Kevin Heffernan.
The IFI Irish Film Archive launch GAA Football Gold DVD at Croke Park today with a gathering of footballers of different generations who will toast a different era in the history of Gaelic Football. The GAA Football Gold DVDis the first time that the All- Ireland Football highlights from the National Film Institute (now the IFI) has been available to own at home. It follows the hugely successful GAA Hurling Gold DVD which was one of last Christmas’ must have stocking-fillers. The beautifully presented DVD is priced €19.99 and is available from www.ifi.ie, the IFI Film Shop and all good retailers, with profits going to the newly launched IFI Irish Film Archive Preservation Fund.
The films capture a different era of gameplay and some of the greatest football players in GAA history such as Galway’s Frankie Stockwell and Seán Purcell, Cork’s Denis “Toots” Kelleher, Dublin’s Kevin Heffernen, Kerry’s Mick O’Connell and Seán Murphy; and Cavan’s Peter Donohoe, P.J Duke and John Joe O’Reilly. The DVD includes wins for Kerry, Meath, Dublin, Mayo and Galway as well as a golden era for Cavan football with three wins and a rare All-Ireland victory for Louth.
The extraordinary atmosphere at Croke Park is well documented with capacity crowds being swelled by fence-jumpers, roof-walkers, canine pitch invaders, Bishops, Presidents and Taoisigh. The finals were occasions of huge national significance, the political and religious pageantry of the era are prominently highlighted while the footage of supporters arriving in Dublin and families gathered around the wireless back home provide priceless records of the social history of the time. Much of the commentary is provided by the legendary Michael O’Hehir who’s infectious passion for the game and humourous style more than cover any hiccups in the emerging technology.
Five time Kerry All-Ireland winner Jimmy Deenihan TD., Minister for Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht welcomed the release of the DVD saying, ‘GAA is a key part of our Irish identity, it is important for us to be able to see and enjoy this interesting stage in the evolution and development of our Gaelic Games. Without the work of the IFI Irish Film Archive in collecting and preserving important parts of our past such as this, we wouldn’t have this valuable record of our past achievements. I am pleased that funding from my Department was provided through the Arts Council, to support the IFI Irish Film Archive to ensure the important work of making accessible our moving image heritage continues”.
Kasandra O’Connell of the IFI Irish Film Archive said ‘We are delighted to follow up the success of last year’sGAA Hurling Gold DVD with this fascinating collection for Gaelic Football Fans also taken from the vaults of the IFI Irish Film Archive. The fact that this amazing footage survives serves as a reminder of the importance of the work of the IFI Irish Film Archive, and that our moving image heritage is an invaluable part of our cultural identity that needs to be actively protected.’
The films have been painstakingly remastered and digitised by the staff of the IFI Irish Film Archive, who preserve the original film reels in their climate-controlled vaults. The Archive holds thousands of reels of commercial and amateur footage, a moving image record of Ireland’s history from 1897 to the present. The IFI ensures that this rich resource is shared with the public in as many ways as possible including research access, public screenings, and events in Dublin, nationally and internationally. The release of key titles on DVD is another way to make this rich material available to audiences.
GAA Football Gold is the sixth in a series of DVD releases from the IFI Irish Film Archive which also includes the feature film Irish Destiny (1926) and Seoda, a collection of short Irish films from 1948-1970, The O’Kalem Colletion, and the hugely successful GAA Hurling Gold DVD. GAA Health Challenge – Off the Booze On the Ball
GeneralThe GAA issued an exciting new health challenge to its members at the launch of ‘Off the Booze and On the Ball’ in Croke Park today (Tuesday, November 22). This fun challenge with a healthy twist invites participants to abstain from alcohol for the month of January and in doing so seek sponsorship to go towards their local GAA club. Participants are also encouraged to engage in some new exercises that help them reach their recommended weekly activity levels during the month, and hopefully throughout 2012. The challenge was extended personally by Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, Criostóir Ó Cuana, who launched the event with Minister of State at the Department of Health, RóisÃn Shortall. The initiative is being driven by the Association’s Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) Programme ‘ a joint initiative with the HSE that aims to reduce the harm caused by the misuse of alcohol and other substances. ‘January is a month of the year when the commencement of good habits comes into sharp focus and twinning a reduction in alcohol intake with increased physical activity makes perfect sense after the possible excesses of the festive season,’ said the President of the GAA. ‘This scheme also offers members the chance to generate funds for their local clubs through sponsorship so the benefits for those involved are plain for all to see.’ Minister Shortall added ‘The history of the GAA, from a small organisation which grew from a meeting in a hotel in 1884 to the huge Association it now is with a presence in every community can be a metaphor for what we are launching here today. Everything begins with small steps and I am confident that this programme will find its way into every club, every community and every county in Ireland. Alcohol abuse presents one of the greatest challenges our country faces and I am delighted to see an organisation as renowned and respected as the GAA take a lead on this issue and I hope other sporting associations will adopt similar schemes’ Crossmaglen’s OisÃn McConville and Mayo’s Aidan O’Shea and Alan Freeman were on-hand to support the launch, as were members of the Melvin Gaels club, Leitrim Intermediate champions 2010. Their senior panel is going ‘Off the Booze and On the Ball’ come January. ‘It’s a good way to kick start the New Year and it gives the lads a challenge to engage in together,’ explains their Manager Billy Gavigan. ‘We’re back in senior championship in 2011 and for the first time the squad is engaging in a strength and conditioning programme in January to complete the activity side of the challenge.’ Club Treasurer Joe McCarron added that any money raised by the players would be a welcome boost to the club. ‘Fundraising is becoming more and more challenging and new, interesting ideas are always welcome.’ Individuals and panel members can sign up at www.gaa.ie/asap where they will receive a sponsorship card and an information pack containing details on health, exercise and diet. All participating clubs will be in with a chance to win a training session with one of Ireland’s leading high performance coaches or one of the country’s leading sports nutritionists in 2012.
Off the Booze & On the Ball, which is endorsed and supported by the GPA, fully supports the RSA’s road safety message and the Ulster Council’s ‘Live to Play’ programme and participants are encouraged to make themselves available as a designated driver for friends or family during their month of abstinence.
All County ASAP Officers are organising a local launch. If clubs could work with their ASAP Officer on this that would be great to spread the word re this initiative. If you have any queries please contact Colin Regan ASAP Officer 087-2945705. Email: colin.regan GAA.ie.
