Annaduff captured the Senior League title on Saturday last in Pairc Sean when they defeated Melvin Gaels on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-11. We take this opportunity to congratulate them on a wonderful victory. Annaduff have been a team in the ascendency over the last number of years. For the last two seasons they contested the senior championship semi finals and last season they lost the League Final so the weekends victory was just reward for this group of players.

The Melvin Gaels club will be disappointed by the defeat but can certainly take a lot of pride in their performances and development over the entire season. They won the Intermediate and Junior A Championships and next weekend they will contest the Division 4 League Final. As already mentioned, this time last year Annaduff were defeated in the League final so maybe Melvin Gaels can look to that for motivation.

Well done again to Annaduff.

The Pitch by Shane Connaughton

Philly lived and played for his team, the jersey, the parish, his friends – the very pitch his enemies are now trying to take from him to turn into a housing estate. Like Philoctetes abandoned by his comrades as they go off to fight the Trojan War, Philly is tormented by painful memories and the unjust fate that holds him prisoner as he replays the events of that day when his club won the county championship for the one and only time and he wasn’t allowed to play. Accused of fathering an illegitimate child, and now threatened with retirement to a nursing home, he holds tight to the memory of the Herculean feats of his youth ‘ and to the land on which these dramas unfolded. For him, the old pitch is sacred ground, and it is here that he will make his last stand.

The 2 nights of Scór na mBunscoileanna took place in Carrick-on-Shannon on Thursday 27th and Ballinamore on Friday 28th last.
The entries from the schools were up on last year and both nights had huge crowds in attendance. The standard of performances were a credit to the schools, parents and teachers, the children really promoted the culture and talent of the schools and showed true team spirit cheering on their classmates and waving their banners and posters.

The best performance on each night in each event got medals and the Cormac MacGiolla shield for the best school overall was won by Aughawillan National School.

An epic encounter last weekend and we expect more of the same in the replay this Saturday at 3.45pm in Ballinamore.

Both teams will feel they left it behind them last Sunday and this is sure to spur them both on in the replay. Another full-blooded contest is on the cards and don’t be surprised if extra time is required.

May the best team win.

Melvin Gaels welcome the Mayo Intermediate Football Champions – Davitts this Sunday at 2.30pm in Pairc Sean. Hopes are high in the County that they can reach this years provincial decider and no doubt they will if they display the same appetite and self-belief as they did against the Sligo Intermediate Football Champions Coolaney Mullinabreena in the pre-lim game.

Coiste Chontae Liatroma take this opportunity to wish them the very best of luck on Sunday and we hope there is a large Leitrim following in Pairc Sean to support them.

Extra Time if necessary

Gortletteragh captured the Leitrim Senior Hurling Championship title on Saturday in Pairc Sean when they defeated a gallant Cluainín side in the Final replay after another extra time thriller. Gortletteragh had the better of exchanges in the opening half and they lead 2-3 to 0-4 at the interval. Cluainín battled back tremendously in the second half and a late free forced extra-time with a 1-8 to 2-5 scoreline. Cluainín took the lead at the start of extra-time but an Eanna MaddenÓgoal for Gortletteragh six minutes from time proved the winning score. Final score read Gortletteragh 3-7. Cluainín 1-11 (after extra-time).

Gortletteragh bridged a 13 year gap to win this years Senior Hurling Championship and we take this opportunity to congratulate them on their success and wish them well on the road in Connacht.

Finally, well done to both teams on producing two absorbing contests and their officials and mentors for promoting hurling in the county. The attendances at both fixtures were very impressive and hopefully that reflects a growing interest in hurling in the county. Again, well done to all concerned.
