GAA stars and sports experts offer insights
into modern health and life challenges
All-Ireland winning Armagh footballer Oisin McConville will be amongst the guest speakers at a unique event in The Sligo Park Hotel on Monday, September 5, at 7pm. President of the GAA, Mr Christy Cooney, will give the closing address on the night.
Entitled ‘A Sporting Chance: Tackling life’s challenges with the GAA’, the free event aims to offer inspiration and information to the GAA’s young players, and their coaches, mentors, and administrators, on some of the challenges they may face during their sporting careers on and off the field.
The event has been organised by Sligo GAA’s Games Promotion Officer, Charlie Harrison, who is also the Sligo senior football captain, and Colin Regan, National Coordinator of the Association’s Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) programme, who represented Leitrim on the playing fields for over 13 years. Other noted contributors on the evening include sports psychologist Caroline Currid, a native of Sligo, who has worked with some of the top teams and individuals in the country across an array of sports, Sligo GAA legend Eamonn O’Hara, and leading Irish sports nutritionist Richelle FlanÓghan.
The event concludes the GAA’s National Urban Project in Sligo town, which aims to raise the profile of and participation levels in gaelic Games in urban bases across the island. Harrison is the coordinator of the project in Sligo.
‘The GAA is working hard to offer all members of our communities the opportunity to participate in gaelic games, and as a result experience the benefits that involvement in sport brings,’ explains Charlie. ‘However, our young people in particular face challenges and tests in all walks of their lives that can impact negatively on their sporting involvement and their health in general. That’s why we wanted to put on an event that addressed some of these issues and provide information and inspiration through the likes of Oisin, Eamonn and the rest of the speakers that helps people realise that making the right choices in your life can make all the difference.
Oisin McConville has won an All-Ireland senior football championship medal, seven Ulster championships and a National League title with Armagh. He has also been awarded two All Stars. However, as he revealed in his recent autobiography, his addiction to gambling proved the biggest challenge he has faced in life. Now working as a counselor in the area, Oisin will offer a unique personal insight into the road too and from addiction and the challenges associated with both.
Other topics covered during the informal open panel discussion ‘ which will be chaired by TG4’s sports presenter Micheál Ó Domhnaill ‘ include the pressures facing young people both in terms of their personal development and their sporting lives, healthy eating and the impact of alcohol on sports performance, and the GAA’s onÓgoing work in reducing the potential harm of alcohol and drugs misuse amongst its members.
‘This event highlights the GAA’s commitment to assist our members in enjoying a full and healthy life both on and off the field,’ explained Mr. Cooney.
The evening, which runs from 7pm-9pm, will feature a mix of fascinating personal experiences combined with expert advice from some of the top professionals in their fields. It will conclude with a Q&A session from the audience and promises to be of value to anyone interested in sport, juvenile development and life’s challenges in general.
For further information contact Colin Regan, National Coordinator of the GAA’s ASAP Programme, on 087-2945705, or Charlie Harrison, Sligo GPO, on 086-7930652.

Weekend Championship Previews
Club FootballThe GWP Junior A Football Championship Quarter Finals are down for decision this weekend and the much anticipated quarter final replay in the Connacht Gold Senior Championship between Mohill and Annaduff.
SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP Quarter Final Replay – Mohill v Annaduff
Mohill got one hell of a score last weekend when they secured a draw in literally the last kick of the game. This is the second year in a row that Mohill have been brought to a replay at quarter final stage. Mohill will be buoyed by their late comeback last weekend but concerned about how they drifted in and out of the game. Annaduff on the other hand will take a lot of confidence from their overall performance even though they lost their 4 point lead in injury time. Last weekends game was a real humdinger and the replay is sure to be no different. May the best team win and remember – extra time if necessary!
SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP Relegation Semi Final Replay
Drumreilly and Cloone couldn’t be separated last weekend and we expect another tight encounter this weekend. Allen Gaels await the losers in the Relegation Final – I doubt either team will want to be in that Final!
INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP Relegation Semi Final Replay
Fenagh and Ballinaglera have one more chance to save their intermediate championship status. Another titanic battle is on the cards and St Mary’s await the losers in the Relegation Final.
JUNIOR A FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP Quarter Finals
Ballinamore SOH v Allen Gaels
Melvin Gaels v Gortletteragh
Leitrim Gaels v Annaduff
Mohill v Bornacoola
The Junior A Football Championship enters knock out stage this weekend with the quarter finals down for decision over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Leitrim Gaels are the favourites for the competition but will face a very tricky assignment against a strong Annaduff side. An equally strong Melvin Gaels side are hotly tipped to advance against Gortletteragh while the meeting of Ballinamore and Allen Gaels is expected to be a tight game and Bornacoola are likely to advance against Mohill.
JUNIOR A FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP Relegation Semi Finals
Kiltubrid v Drumkeerin
St Mary’s v Carrigallen
The battle for survival will ensure these two ties go down to the wire.
JUNIOR B FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP – Round 2
Ballinamore SOH v Glencar Manorhamilton
Fenagh v St Osnats Glencar
Ballinamore SOH and Glencar Manor are both unbeaten entering Round 2 so this game should be close. St Osnat’s were beaten in their first game and simply have to win against Fenagh to stay in contention.

TG4 All Ireland Ladies Intermediate Football Championship Semi Final
Club FootballNeighbours Cavan and Leitrim will go head-to-head this Saturday in a bid to reach the TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Intermediate Football Championship final.
Cavan start the game as favourites but face a Leitrim team who have crushed all before them in their group to advance to this stage of the competition. A win would see Niall Kilcranns team pull off a major coup.
Cavan play Leitrim in this All-Ireland IFC semi-final this Saturday, August 27, in Cashel, Co Tipperary, where throw-in is scheduled for 4.15pm.
We wish the team and management the very best of luck.

The Lucky Seven
Club FootballSeven teams qualified for the Semi Finals of the Senior and Intermediate Championships at the weekend with only Mohill and Annaduff having another bite at the cherry this weekend to decide the last senior semi final spot.Â
Connacht Gold Senior Championship
In Pairc Sean, St Mary’s booked their place in the semi finals with a comfortable win over Bornacoola while Glencar Manorhamilton justified their favourites tag with their win over a battling Kiltubrid side. In Cloone, Ballinamore Sean O’Heslin’s were impressive winners over neighbours Aughawillan while Mohill staged an injury time comeback to score 1-1 to bring their tie with Annaduff to a replay.Â
GWP Intermediate Championship
In Drumshanbo, Drumkeerin showed that there is no substitute for experience when they recorded a hard earned two point win over a hotly fancied Eslin side. Glenfarne Kiltyclogher put in a solid and impressive hours football to ruthlessly dispose of neighbours Glencar Manorhamilton. In Pairc Sean, Melvin Gaels as expected accounted for Aughavas while the surprise result of the day was Gortletteragh’s win over Dromahair. Incidentally, in the Intermediate Championship the semi final pairings have all emerged from groups 1 & 3 with representations from Groups 2 and 4 all falling at the quarter final stage.Â
In the Senior Relegation Playoffs Carrigallen retained their senior status with a one point win over Allen Gaels while Cloone and Drumreilly were deadlocked at the final whistle and must meet again. It was a similar story in the Intermediate Relegation Playoffs with Aughnasheelin retaining their status with a comfortable win over St Mary’s and Fenagh and Ballinaglera drew and will have to meet again.
Well done to all the winning teams and we now look forward to the following semi final meetings:-
Senior Championship Semi Finals
Glencar Manorhamilton v Ballinamore Sean O’Heslin’s
St Mary’s v Annaduff or Mohill
Intermediate Championship Semi Finals
