Work placements available for Members of the GAA
Begin Again career initiative helps 240 return to workforce
Members of the GAA who are eager to rejoin the workforce have the opportunity to take up some 300 work placements provided by Begin Again(www.beginÓgain.ie), a career advancement programme developed by the Irish Centre for Business Excellence (ICBE).
The programme which was launched in 2010 has already placed over 400 unemployed people in work placements throughout Ireland. Over 240 of these have now returned to employment, providing the exchequer with an additional estimated €4.8m on an annualised basis.
The ICBE Begin Again programme provides participants with the opportunity to partake in a highly targeted twelve week work placement within a suitable company. The Programme is a mix of certified training, internship and mentoring, with four central themes; employment and employability, resilience and well being, innovation and enterprise and lifelong learning and training.
Over 300 Companies have taken part in the programme to date with established companies such as Supermacs, Boston Scientific and Bewleys all providing work placements and full time employment opportunities.
Funded by the Labour Market Activation Fund, the Begin Again programme has enabled people who were experiencing both short term and long term unemployment gain that crucial foothold back into the workforce. To date 41% of participants have obtained employment, 19% have gained self employment or contracts with a further 5% re-entering the education system. A further 21% are currently in workplaces with real job prospects.
Reflecting on the programme, Trevor Quinn a recent participant said, "Begin Again offered me an ideal platform to secure work in a difficult economic climate. Following three months with The Mayo News on the Begin Again programme the newspaper has now offered me a new contract. The group dynamic on our training days was supportive, positive and practical throughout. I couldnt recommend the programme highly enough, a fantastic initiative which enables unemployed professionals to source employment and thrive again in a working environment."
Mike Gaffney, spokesperson for Begin Again is urging more people to take a proactive first step and contact Begin Again by logging onto www.beginÓgain.ie. "We currently have work placements available right across the country including Dublin, Galway, Cork, Limerick and Waterford. These positions include roles in Sales, Marketing, Office Administration, IT, Accounting and Research."
The Begin Again programme is primarily aimed at experienced and professional individuals who, once given the opportunity are bringing real value to a company or business. All participants taking part in the Begin Again programme must have availed of unemployment assistance from the Social Welfare for the period of three months. Begin Again participants retain all of their social welfare benefits during the work placement programme.
Explaining the impact of Begin Again, Pat OConnor, CEO of the ICBE said, "We have seen participants come from a broad range of backgrounds and educational levels including engineers, accountants, quantity surveyors, sales and administration professionals and operational level people. Having had a successful outcome for over three quarters of our 400 participants, 49% of whom were long term unemployed, we believe we are providing a valuable service for the Irish public and the Irish State. We estimate that Begin Again is costing less than 50% of any previous government sponsored labour market activation programme."
The strength of the programme is its ability to successfully match individuals skills and expertise with industry gaps and opportunities. Participants meet with a number of possible companies to discuss the mutual benefits of a work placement. As a result of the work placements; applicants gain additional experience as well as mentoring support and training whilst the companies gain an additional member of staff for a focused project to be delivered at no extra cost. The overall benefit for both is the prospect of full time employment and in securing an up-skilled focused employee.

Leitrim GAA are pleased to announce that County Senior team member Adrian Croal will be our Vhi GAA cul camp ambassador for 2011. Adrian has both attended and coached at Vhi GAA cul camps over the years and will be able to offer lots of advise to all attendees at this years Vhi GAA cul camps.
Free Places competition
This week sees the launch of our Vhi GAA Cul Camp free places competition in conjunction with the Leitrim Observer. This competition offers children the chance to win a free place on any of our twelve Vhi GAA Cul camps. The competition will run for the next four weeks.
Application Forms
Application forms have been distributed through the clubs and schools over the past few weeks. The on-line booking has commenced and we would encourage as many parents as possible to use this booking format. Camp type means, activities in Football, Hurling & Camogie will take place at the camp.

As it gurgles out from deep underground on the Cuilcagh Mountains, the Shannon River has no idea of the effect it has on life in Ireland. It is written of in song and story, it drains and floods in turn, it is the powerhouse for hundreds of boats and cruisers, it entertains many a hopeful angler, its route is mapped on countless brochures, it has attracted thousands of visitors to its banks and it has been photographed and painted for generations. Like the river itself, its story could go on and on.
But all of this pales into insignificance compared to the effect it has on what colour of jersey we will be wearing on our way to Páirc Seán on Sunday June 12th. Will we be decked out in green and gold or will we be sporting the primrose and blue?
It depends on which side of the Shannon we first saw light of day. Was it in Cootehall or Leitrim Village, Cortober or Bridge Street, MahanÓgh or Mount Allen, Bornacoola or across the bridge in Rooskey, Drumsna or Kilmore; you could throw a stone from one into the other, but there is a very distinct dotted line somewhere on a map that makes all the difference. Were either Leitrim or Roscommon and no one will ever change that.
The Shannon shouldnt have to take all the blame, for the border in places is just a laneway or a gripe. Sean and Charlie Flynn could run out their front door at Cartron Beg on the Drumkeerin road and jump into Roscommon, but two more committed Leitrim supporters you couldnt find. When the Connacht Champions of 1994 toured the county with the Nestor Cup, hadnt the Flynns the biggest bonfire in Leitrim burning especially brightly just to tease the Roscommon neighbours!
There will be lots of cross-border teasing in the run up to the big game in Carrick.
Wait till we get ye in Carrick – Look what we did to Sligo.
What did we do to Sligo last year? Ye havent a hope!
So the banter will go on at the mart, in the pubs, in the Observer, on Shannonside, everywhere. A sort of civil war will break out in families that inter-married across the great divide, in some gardens both flags will fly side by side.
There will be plenty of hype and great expectation. Roscommon will repeat and repeat how they always fear coming to Páirc Seán, but deep down they will presume they will win again, noting that records show they have always left with a victory; Leitrim will say its time to draw a line in the sand – no point in putting up a good show but being on the wrong end of the scoreboard.
Roscommon will be buoyed by the thoughts of the St. Brigids backbone in their team, but James Glancy will be reminding Leitrim that the Glencar Manorhamilton contingent provides one equally strong, as the Connacht Club Championship game showed last Autumn man for man the fifteen on each side have very little between them, so it all to play for.
Páirc Seán will be a mass of colour as Dessie Foley steers the Kiltubrid Pipe Band around the pitch in the pre-match parade, past the Lurganboys on Tour banner behind the lower goals, in those tense moments before Amhrán na bhFiann and the throw-in. We will even have colour television!
But whose cheeks will be the rosiest with pride at about half three on Sunday 12th, as they head home to gloat at their neighbours a few yards away on the other bank of the Shannon?

Our County U14 Ladies are in the All Ireland ‘A’ Championship Shield Final in BanÓgher this Saturday, Co. Offaly. Throw-in is at 2pm. This is a fantastic achievement for this bunch of ladies and their management team led by Pat McWeeney. Please come and support these ladies as All Irelands do not come around every day.

Coca-Cola 125 Years Thank You Fund
GeneralCoca-Cola has established the Coca-Cola 125 Years Thank You Fund, in partnership with The Wheel and the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action NICVA). Coca-Cola are donating €125,000 to the fund which will be granted to non-profit community, voluntary and charitable organisations throughout the island of Ireland to help support initiatives focused on the following areas; Social and Education Programmes aimed at Youth, Healthy and Active Lifestyles, and Environmental Leadership. Ten organisations will receive €10,000 each and five organisations will receive €5000 each.

VHI GAA Cul Camps

Leitrim GAA will host 12 regional based Vhi GAA Cul camps during the months of July and August at the following venues: Ck-on – Shannon, Manorhamilton, Drumshanbo, Dromod, Kinlough, Gortletteragh, Aughavas, Dromahair, Fenagh, Leitrim, Drumkeerin and Ballinamore. Vhi GAA Cul camps cater for children from age 6 to 12 years, and all activities are graded to cater for children of all abilities.
This year all participants will receive a specially designed Vhi GAA cul camp kit ie. Jersey, togs & socks complete with back pack and with no increase on last years prices Vhi GAA cul camps remainÓgreat value. All equipment including Hurleys and Helmets will be provided by Leitrim GAA.
