Water Breaks – Thursday August 11 to Monday August 15

CCC Liatroma has just confirmed a decision to introduce water breaks at matches of all levels from this evening, Thursday, August 11 through Monday, August 15. This measure has been introduced due to the exceptional circumstances brought about by the current heatwave. The water breaks, one in each half, will be called by the match referee, around the 15th minute of each half.

Scór Sinsir 2022 Information Webinars
Coiste Náisiúnta Scór will be hosting webinars next week to support clubs and counties across the country in promoting Scór Sinsir 2022. For clubs who are new to Scór, it is a celebration of our culture and heritage, showcasing our language, music, stories and dance.
As it has been two years since we last held Scór Sinsir competitions at local level, Coiste Náisiúnta Scór want to offer everyone an opportunity to attend a webinar that will provide support to clubs who wish to enter the competition.  Clubs are welcome to join our provincial webinar where we will be able to answer questions and provide any information that is needed for Scór Sinsir 2022. Where clubs are unable to attend our own provincial webinar, they may attend another one of their choice.

The late Proinnsias Redican, Fenagh St. Caillin’s GAA, Tara GAA and London GAA

Leitrim GAA would like to offer its deepest condolences to the family of Proinnsias Redican, especially his beloved wife Mary, his children Siobhan, Gráinne, Fiona, Ciara, Diarmuid and Andrais, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchild, surviving brothers Andrew and Sean, sister Maureen and all his extended family and friends, on the occasion of his sad passing.

Proinnsias played with Fenagh St Caillin’s at all levels including Senior before emigrating to London in the 1950s  to work as a taylor on Saville Row. While training as a taylor in Roscommon and Sligo towns, Proinnsias won a senior championship medal with Craobh Rua GAA in Sligo. In his formative years, he had been part of the successful Fenagh St. Caillin’s Minor team which won the Leitrim MFC titles in 1950 and 1951, his teammates including the late Leitrim GAA legends Packie McGarty and Cathal Flynn.

In London, Proinnsias was introduced to the Tara GAA club by Mohill man Willie McGarty, this would ultimately lead to many more Leitrim and Fenagh St. Caillin’s men playing for Tara GAA over the years. He played on the senior team from the time he joined and for many years afterward. Proinnsias held many positions including Chairman of the Tara GAA Club on a number of occasions and at the London GAA County Board level where he helped to found the London Minor Board at which he also was Chairman for a period.

Proinnsias, faithfully, made an annual trip to Fenagh every summer where he attended any Fenagh St. Caillin’s games that were on no matter the level. It gave him great satisfaction when his native club won the Smith Monumentals Leitrim Intermediate Football Championship title in 2018 and returned to Senior Championship ranks after a long absence.

Leitrim GAA Connacht Championship matches with London GAA have been significant occasions in the GAA life of Prionnsias over many decades now, as we have made the 5-year trip to Ruislip. His connection and contribution towards both units were recognised no later than April 17 last, on the occasion of the Connacht SFC encounter London v Leitrim as Prionnsias presented the ball to the match referee, Martin McNally, in advance of the 2022 All-Ireland Football Championship opening game. It is rather poignant that he passed to his eternal reward on the morning after the 2022 All-Ireland Football Championship Final.

He was one of the most frequent attendees at any games in Ruislip in London. He attended for the last time 2 weeks ago where he had the great pleasure of seeing his grandson Tom help Tara GAA win the U15 championship.

Aside from the actual playing or involvement in the games, there are many people over the decades who have departed these shores in search of a better future who will recall the positive and caring influence of Prionnsias, and his family, in placing their anxiety at ease far from home, whilst giving them a foothold towards a better future. Their contribution towards a footballing future was unconditional. Their testimonials give us the true nature of the heart of the person that was Prionnsias Redican. He cared.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Underage County Blitzes At Connacht GAA Centre

SUCCESSFUL DAY AT CONNACHT BLITZES FOR COUNTY’S UNDERAGE SQUADS
 
Leitrim’s County’s U15 and U16 squads had a successful outing at Day 2 of the  Connacht GAA Blitzes in Bekan on Saturday last.   The U15 squad continued their winning ways with 2 victories over Sligo and Roscommon which leaves them with 3 wins from 3 in the Dermot Earley competition. The U16s, on the other hand, got their Ted Webb campaign back on track with wins over Mayo and Roscommon.
U15: LEITRIM 2-10  SLIGO 0-10
Leitrim U15s got off to a winning start on Saturday when they accounted for a game Sligo outfit.   Leitrim came out of the blocks early with points from Gavin Gallagher and Ruairi O’Rourke. Sligo responded with 2 points of their own before Joey McBrien found the net for Leitrim. This was followed by another Ruairi O’Rourke point sandwiched between 2 Sligo points to leave Leitrim 2 points to the good.   The first half ended with Leitrim points from Tadhg Regan and Gavin Gallagher in response to 3 Sligo efforts to leave the minimum between the sides at the break.   The 2nd half was just as competitive as the 1st but Leitrim maintained their advantage throughout.   Jack Kelly, Gavin Gallagher and Ruairi O’Rourke added early points for Leitrim as Sligo added 2 of their own.   Leitrim took control of the game in the final quarter as an Oisin Conlon goal and points from Ruairi O’Rourke and Gavin Gallagher were enough to see off the final effort from Sligo.   Team and Scorers: Josh Sheridan; Kevin Faughnan; Killian Mulvey; James Hughes; Niall Torsney; Niall Stenson; Luke Farrell; Gavin Gallagher (0-3); Bailey McBride; Tadhg Regan (0-2); Sean Carolan Morris; Mark Ahearne; Jack Kelly (0-1); Joey McBrien (1-0); Ruairi O’Rourke (0-4). Subs: Daire Shannon; Luke Fitzsimons; Peter Moran, Oisin Conlon (1-0); Senan Bohan; Cillian Downes.

Leitrim’s 2nd outing on Saturday was a very one-sided affair as they made short work of one of the 2 Roscommon teams participating in the Dermot Earley competition.   All aspects of Leitrim’s play in this game were firing on all cylinders as they put in a complete performance.   Defensively Leitrim were solid, turning Roscommon over time and again with some stout tackling from Luke Farrell and Killian Mulvey in particular.   Niall Torsney and Peter Moran drove forward from the half back line with both players contributing to the scoreline.   In midfield Sean Carolan Morris and Luke Fitzsimons gave their forward line a platform from which they reaped the benefits of fast attacking football.  Up front the Leitrim forwards played some great free flowing football and all players played their part as Oisin Conlon, Jack Kelly, Joey McBrien and sub Ruairi O’Rourke finding their range on a regular basis.   Leitrim led 3-8 to 1-0 at half time and the introduction of all the Leitrim subs didn’t make a dent in their dominance in the 2nd half as they added a further 4-6 to their tally.  Roscommon will know that better days are to come when their 2 regional teams amalgamate for the Ted Webb competition in 2023 but that shouldn’t diminish a fine effort by the Leitrim youngsters.

Leitrim U16s got back to winning ways with a convincing 9 point victory over a dogged Mayo selection. An early Senan Mooney goal followed by an Evan Kilrane point gave Leitrim the perfect start. Mayo responded with a goal of their own and their next score came courtesy of a pointed free. This score was sandwiched between points from Dara Greenan and Cathal McCarthy. David Liu Doyle made a telling interception that ended up in the hands of a marauding Cian Reynolds who calmly finished to the net to give Leitrim a healthy advantage. 3 Mayo points were matched by Leitrim, the points coming courtesy of Cian Reynolds, Adam Reynolds and Josh Maye. Leitrim initially failed to build on their 5 point advantage in the 2nd half as Mayo added 1-3 to their score to grab the lead for the first and only time in the game. The Leitrim response was swift and sure as Eanna McNamara and Josh Maye started the Leitrim onslaught with well taken points. Senan Mooney added his 2nd goal to restore Leitrim’s 5 point lead. Mayo’s final 2 points were breakaway efforts as Leitrim added 4 points of their own through Evan Kilrane, Senan Mooney, Brian Keaney and Josh Maye. If ever a game could be described as a game of 2 halves, this was surely it. Roscommon made a whirlwind start scoring 2-1 inside the first 5 minutes of the game. Leitrim started to get a grip on the game with a point from Josh Maye. Noah McNulty added another point before a collision with one his own players took Eanna McNamara out of the game with an injury. While he was incapacitated on the ground Roscommon seized on the numerical advantage to score their 3rd goal of the game. Their final point of the half was sandwiched between 2 Leitrim efforts from Noah McNulty and Brian Keaney to leave the half time score Leirim 0-4 Roscommon 3-2. Leitrim set about reducing the deficit immediately in the 2nd half as they rattled off 8 consecutive points without reply courtesy of Josh Maye(3), Cian Reynolds(2), Brian Keaney, Darragh Gardiner and Dara Greenan. Roscommon’s next point levelled the tie before Senan Mooney stole in behind the Roscommon defence and expertly finished to the net. Brian Keaney completed Leitrim’s scoring for the day with a wonderful long range point. Leitrim GAA Senior Football Team Management Announcement

Leitrim GAA Management Committee at its meeting tonight decided that it would be recommending to its July County Committee meeting that Andy Moran’s current two-year term as Leitrim GAA Senior Football Team Manager would be extended to include the next two seasons that is 2023 and 2024.

We are delighted to announce that Andy Moran has accepted the terms of this recommendation, subject to its acceptance at the County Committee meeting, and we look forward to the continued progress of the Leitrim Senior Footballers over the next two years.

The late Pat Conefrey, Corrawallen, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim.

Leitrim GAA is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Pat Conefrey, late of Corrawllen, Carrigallen, County Leitrim. Pat was a former Principal Teacher of Drumlea NS, having previously taught in Gortahoose NS, before its closure. Throughout his time teaching pupils from the club area of Drumreilly, he imbued in them a love of Gaelic Games, which has borne much fruit in his club and indeed onwards towards the production of many players who excelled at inter-county level over the decades.

Pat himself was a former Senior player with Leitrim and featured regularly on the famous team of the late 1950s which contested a number of Connacht Finals of that era, and continued to play for the county into the 1960s. In his early playing days, he was also a member of the 1956 Erin’s Hope team which featured the St Patrick’s Drumcondra Trainee teachers who won a Dublin Senior Championship at that time. At the local level, he played his club football with Fenagh.

On the GAA administration front, Pat was a former officer of Bord na nÓg Liatroma and was the first Cathaoirleach of Cumann na mBunscol Liatroma. In 2007 he was inducted into the Leitrim GAA Hall of Fame and was presented with the Jim  Lynch Hall of Fame Award in recognition of his lifetime contribution to the GAA in the county. Pat had many strings to his bow and his weekly column as Drumreilly local correspondent in the Leitrim Observer was widely read and his careful and encyclopedic recall of what was then current and indeed many GAA past glories in his local area is a permanent record of events of those times.

Pat will be sadly missed by his beloved wife, Rose; their children: Jacinta, Jarlath, Damien, Fergal and Edel (McCartin); his sister, Mary Heeran; brother Willie; son-in-law John; daughters-in-law: Louise, Martina and Marianne and his adored grandchildren: Lee, Ben, Elle, Faye, Oisín, Olwyn, Éabha, Doireann, John (McCartin Jr), Tiarnan, John Conefrey, Ciaran and Grace.

We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and wide circle of friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.

Leitrim GAA are saddened to learn of the death of Pat Egan, Corrabeagh, Foxfield, Fenagh, Co Leitrim. Pat, a former referee with Leitrim GAA for many years and and father of current referee Enda Egan. Pat was more recently a long standing member and former Chairman of the Leitrim GAA Hearings Committee and Match Day steward and friend to many.

We offer our deepest sympathies to his loving wife Phil, children Marian (Crinnigan), Enda and Edel (Canning). His sons in law Ciarán and Gary, Linda, his adored grandchildren (Caiden, Ella, Kayla, Darragh, Leah, Laoise, Aobha and Róisín), brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends.

Leitrim Minor Manager Adrian Dockery Steps Down

Leitrim GAA is very disappointed to announce that Minor Football Manager Adrian Dockery has decided to step away from the role, following the conclusion of this year’s Connacht Minor Football Championship. The Roscommon native has been in charge of the county’s fortunes at this level over the past two seasons but has decided to relinquish the role, primarily due to an increased workload in his professional capacity.

Taking on the role of County Minor Manager in January 2021, in the midst of a nationwide Covid Lockdown was an arduous task for Adrian and his Management team and it wasn’t until late April that they could meet their prospective charges in person. Despite this, he and his coaching staff successfully moulded a team together to be very competitive in the 2021 Connacht MFC v Sligo in late July, which was played on a knock-out basis. Ultimately, Sligo went on to claim the title.

This season in which, thankfully, normality resumed, Adrian and his backroom team put together a squad of players that was one of the more competitive Minor Squads in recent times, resulting in performances that yielded a late draw with Roscommon and a first Connacht MFC victory over current All-Ireland Minor Semi-Finalists Galway, the first victory at this level over the Tribesmen since 1998. The campaign ended with a Shield Final loss to Roscommon on June 3.

Adrian has been a model of professionalism in his role as Leitrim Minor Manager and we thank him for taking on the role, first and foremost, and also for the attention to detail and marked improvement in performance level that he has been responsible for bringing to this group of players. He assembled an excellent backroom team to assist him in his role and Leitrim GAA wishes to acknowledge the significant contributions made by the following over the past two seasons:

It was an absolute privilege & a fantastic experience. I would like to thank our backroom team, Coaching & Games Staff, and Leitrim GAA County Board. Their work and support, often unseen, were enormously appreciated. Above all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players & their families for their commitment & efforts this past two years. I hope this outstanding group of young men enjoyed the experience and will continue to represent themselves, their families, clubs & county with distinction in the future. Thank you all.”

Leitrim GAA wishes Adrian and the members of his backroom team the very best of luck in his future endeavours.
