Hastings Cup Shield Final
Longford 1 – 14
Leitrim 0 – 15
Despite putting in a massive effort Leitrim U21s came up short at the end of the recent hard fought Hastings Cup Shield final under lights in a rain soaked Drumlish where Longfords more clinical approached and killer instinct carried them to victory at the end.
Leitrim enjoyed a huge amount of dominance in this game but was never able to get sufficiently far ahead of Longford to put the game out of their opponents reach and retain the Hastings Cup Shield that they claimed with an extra time win over the Longford men twelve months ago in Ballymahon.
At different spells in the first half Leitrim opened up gaps of three and five points on Longford. Meanwhile in the second half after coming from behind Leitrim edged into a two points with ten minutes to but thenÓgot piped at the post by a more ruthless Longford at the end.
The Longford men drew first blood when Ronan McGoldrick fired over a 4th minute point. After that Leitrim seized the initiative over the next six minutes to claim a three points lead when Shane Moran hit the target twice with Eoin Ward and Conor Beirne adding a point each. James Noonan tapped over a 12th minute Longford free and Pádraig McCormack shot a point from play two minutes later to reduce Leitrims lead to the minimum. James Carroll received a yellow card in the 17th minute and over the next four minutes Leitrim upped their game again to go five points clear. In this period Kevin Conlan, after being fouled by James Carroll, shot over from a free and then pointed from play while Conor Beirne also converted a free and Philip McGourty found the range from play. In response Longford staged a rally in the final eight minutes of the half that reduced Leitrims advantage to two points by the interval. In this spell James Noonan tapped over two Longford frees and Pauric Gill added a point from play that gave a halftime score line of Leitrim 0 – 8 Longford 0 – 6.
Within 90 seconds of the throw-in Longford had a dream second half start when sub Marty Mulvey finished to the Leitrim net from close range after J. J. Mathews sent a ball across from the left wing into the goalmouth. Longford stretched their lead in the following minute after Diarmuid Cooney hit over a point from play. But the gap between the sides was down to a single point shortly afterwards when Conor Beirne replied with a Leitrim point after getting a pass from Aaron Hickey. Beirne was yellowed carded in the 36th minute and two minutes later J. J. Mathews shot a Longford point while Diarmuid Cooney was the recipient of another yellow card in the 40th minute. Three minutes later Leitrim ‘keeper Philip Farrelly denied a goal bound Longford effort that was shot by the lively J. J. Mathews. Leitrim regained the initiative and got back on level terms by the 46th minute after Kevin Conlan and Sean McNabola whipped over a point apiece during a period when Longfords Fergal Reilly saw yellow. Converted frees by Conor Beirne and Kevin Conlan edged Leitrim into a two points lead by the 49th minute. But after that Longford took the game by the scruff of the neck to level matters in the space of three more minutes and thenÓgrab a three points lead with five minutes remaining.
In this spell Pauric Gill initiated the Longford revival with three well-hit points on the trot while Colm P. Smyth also shot over from play and James Noonan tapped over a free. But Leitrim then came back to reduce Longfords lead to the minimum when Sean McNabola and Aaron Hickey hit over a point each in the 57th and 58th minutes. However Pauric Gill then made Longfords victory secure when he shot a point just before the game entered injury time, which lasted an extra two minutes.

Smyth 0 – 1, Shane Mahon, Fergal Reilly, Conor Quaine, DarrenÓgallagher, Pádraig McCormack 0 – 1, Pauric Gill 0 – 5, Diarmuid Cooney, 0 – 1, Ronan McGoldrick 0 – 1, J. Noonan 0 – 4(4f.), J. J. Seamus Dillon RIP
GeneralIt is with deep sadness that Coiste Chontae Liatroma report the passing of former Leitrim Footballer Seamus Dillon.
Seamus was one of lifes true gentlemen. He had a great love for his club Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher and always took great pride in togging out for them. He had the distinction of captaining their senior team on a number of occasions and he also won an U21 County medal with GlenManor Gaels in 1998. In recent years he was also involved in managing underage teams for his club.
He was an extremely talented player who represented the Green and Gold with distinction. Seamus played for the Leitrim senior team in the 1998/1999 season and made his senior championship debut against Roscommon in 1999 and made his league debut against Dublin in 1999.
Despite his recent injury Seamus remained a loyal supporter of both his Club and County. Chontae Liatroma take this opportunity to extend our deepest sympathy to his family, the Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher GAA Club and his many, many friends.
Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
_____________________________________________________________________
Please be advised that due to the sad passing of Seamus the following weekend games have been postponed as a mark of respect:
ACL D1 Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher v Glencar/Manorhamilton
ACL D5 Mohill v Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher
Funeral Arrangements;

Coaching News
CoachingFollowing a meeting of the coaching and games development committee, it was proposed that as part of developing coaching in clubs, a pilot programme would be rolled out where members of our coach education team would attend a number of training sessions at U-12/U-10 /U-8 grades in four clubs.
The coach tutors would attend in an advisory capacity and offer advice and assistance to the coaches. The club coaches would still control the training session, with the tutors offering advice on best practice and appropriateness of the activities in the session for the age group concerned. The tutors would also provide information on where to source appropriate material for inclusion in the training session and answer any questions the club coaches may have. Coaches participating in this programme will be deemed to have completed the practical section of the foundation award course.
Once the scheme is piloted in the initial four clubs and we are happy that it is giving clubs the appropriate assistance, it will be rolled out on a phased basis to all clubs.
If your club would like to be considered for inclusion in the initial pilot programme please contact Padraig McGourty via email or on 086-8106431. If more than 4 clubs express an interest inÓgetting involved in the pilot programme it is proposed to conduct a draw at the March meeting of Coiste na nÓg to select the clubs to take part.

Preview of Gallogy Catering ACL
Club FootballThe evenings are getting long, the weather is improving (dont hold your breath) and YES at last we had the start of the GAA football calendar last weekend. In advance of the league – debate within clubs as usual centres around:-
– Who is showing well at training
– What the starting 15 will be
– Where will certain players line out
– What new talent will emerge during the year
After this weekend more victories will be savoured, defeats will be well scrutinised and I suspect there will be MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS.
Last weekend the 2011 adult fixtures programme got into full swing with the Gallogly Catering ACL Division 5 commencing. This year 13 teams will do battle in this Division and at the weekend 5 games took place. Cloone had a home win over Glencar Manorhamilton who have entered a 4th team this year. Bornacoola also recorded a home win over Sean OHeslins and Fenagh did likewise over Drumreilly while Gortletteragh and Kiltubrid and St Osnats and Eslin served up draws.
This weekend Divisions 1, 2 and 4 get underway (full details of fixtures in our fixtures section).
DIVISION 1
2010 Division 1 league winners Glencar/Manorhamilton start the defence of their title with an away fixture against newly promoted Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher. Contests between the neighbouring clubs are always entertaining and close. Players on both teams are friends off the field but these friendships will be put to one side on Saturday as bragging rights take centre stage. Supporters of both sides are sure to turn up in large numbers to the Glenfarne venue. GAME POSTPONED AS A MARK OF RESPECT TO SEAMUS DILLON (RIP)
Bornacoola had a short stay in Division 2 and will be anxious to prove themselves in the top flight again this year. They welcome Melvin Gaels who had a disappointing run in the 2010 Senior championship which saw them relegated to Intermediate championship for 2011. Bornacoola would be wise to ignore their oppositions 2011 championship status as the North Leitrim men are consistent league performers.
2010 Intermediate Football champions Aughawillan welcome North Leitrim rivals Dromahair in their opening fixture. Both sides are brimming with talented players and this is possibly one of the games of the weekend. Both teams finished mid-table on 12 points last year and in the corresponding 2010 fixture only a goal separated the sides with Aughawillan recording an away victory. Another close game is possibly on the cards here.
Carrigallen host Annaduff who were desperately unlucky to lose the Division 1 league final last year. Both sides had impressive runs in the championship and league last year. Carrigallen will be hoping to start their season in whirl-wind fashion as they did last year when they defeated Annaduff 0-5 to 3-9. If Annaduff can start the league as they finished their 2010 league campaign this will be a much closer encounter.
Mohill take on Drumreilly in the excellent facilities of Eslin GAA Club. In 2010 Mohill recorded an impressive win over Drumreilly in the league and at the end of the league campaign Mohill were placed 3rd in the table with Drumreilly only surviving in Division 1 on the last day of the season. Drumreilly will not want to be in a similar position this year and this should be motivation in itself but they do face a tough opening assignment.
Last years Senior championship finalists St Marys will host rivals Allen Gaels in a local derby in Pairc Sean. In the 2010 senior league and championship St Marys recorded victories over Allen Gaels. St Marys will be boosted by their Minor Championship success last year and an appearance in the U21 A Final. Allen Gaels have a lot of underage talent coming through and this year they will be hoping to blood some exciting new players.
DIVISION 2
Division 2 consists of ten teams of which 8 are first teams. Ballinamore Sean OHeslins and Kiltubrid will be hoping to make a quick return to Division 1 and all eyes will be on this fixture to see who prevails. Aughnasheelin will have to be at their best to account for Cloone while Gortletteragh who had an impressive run in the league last year welcome newly promoted Fenagh to their grounds. Drumkeerin host a much fancied Eslin side who were crowned Junior A Champions in 2010. The fixture between the two second string teams (Bornacoola and Glencar Manorhamilton) will take place at a later date. Please note Round 4 fixtures take place this weekend and not Round 1.
DIVISION 4
Division 4 consists of 12 teams and all 6 games will take place this weekend. As always this is a very closely contested division. Drumkeerin who were relegated from Division 3 last year will be firm favourites to make a return upwards while St Marys are sure to set the pace again this year (they finished in the top two last year but could not be promoted as they already had a team competing in Div 3). Leitrim Gaels were promoted from Division 5 and will set their sights on maintaining Div 4 status this year along with the 11 other clubs. DIVISION 3 is due to commence next weekend.
ENJOY THE SEASON!
