It is with deep sadness that Coiste Chontae Liatroma report the death of former Leitrim great Mick Kilkenny.  Mick was one of the last surviving members of the 1938 Leitrim All Ireland winning Junior team which he captained.  The Aughavas man was the recipient of the Jim Lynch Hall of Fame award at the Coiste Chontae Liatroma awards in 2005.  He was a talented player who represented the Green and Gold with great distinction. He had a great love for his native county and was a loyal supporter of Leitrim GAA throughout his life. Coiste Chontae Liatroma take this opportunity to extend our deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

James Glancy from the Glencar Manorhamilton Club has been named senior team captain for the year.  James helped Glencar Manorhamilton to a third successive Leitrim Senior Football Championship in September.  Barry Prior (Aughawillan)  and Tomas Beirne (Eslin) were named vice-captains.  Both players were pivotal in their club successes in winning the Leitrim Intermediate and Junior Championships respectively.  Well done to all three.
The Allianz League (Division 4) kicks off for Leitrim on Sunday week – February 6th with Clare the visitors.

Connacht FBD League Roundup

Leitrim were scheduled to kick-start their FBD campaign with a home game against the 2010 FBD Connacht League holders Mayo on Sunday 9th January in Ballinamore. The game was transferred to Ballyhaunis on the Saturday due to a frozen pitch in Ballinamore but despite the Leitrim team and supporters travelling to the Mayo venue on the Sunday the game was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

This was desperately disappointing for all concerned. So eventually on the following Sunday (16th January) Leitrim got their FBD campaign underway with an away fixture in Elphin against Connacht Champions Roscommon. Leitrim fell short on the day in a low Scóring game which ended 0-7 to 0-5. Both sides were rusty but this was no real surprise taking into account the long winter break and limited collective training opportunities in January due to weather conditions.

Last Sunday (23rd January) the fixture between Leitrim and GMIT scheduled for Cloone again fell victim to inclement weather but the game was quickly re-fixed for Tuesday evening last (25th January) in Kiltubrid and Leitrim scored their first win in the 2011 FBD competition by a convincing margin. The home side were full value for their victory as they dominated proceedings for long periods. The final score was Leitrim 3-14 to the students 0-7 with all bar three of Leitrims scores coming from play.

To-date in the FBD League the Leitrim management team have had the opportunity to get a look at a number of club players who got their first taste of senior inter-county football namely – Gavin Reynolds (Cloone)Paul Brennan and Conor Sheridan (Melvin Gaels) Conor Kelly (Dromahair) Fergal Clancy (Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher) Brian McDonald and Anthony McDonald (Glencar Manorhamilton)Brian ODonnell and Robert Lowe (St Marys).

James Glancy from the Glencar Manorhamilton Club has been named team captain for the year while Tomas Beirne and Barry Prior are vice-captains. Well done to all three.

Next up for Leitrim is the re-fixture against Mayo which is scheduled to take place this Sunday at 2pm in Ballinamore. We urge Leitrim supporters to turn up in large numbers to support the team as a win could see them top Group 2 (on Scóring average) and contest the home final against the table toppers from Group 1. Its all to play for!

For the first time since 1994, Leitrim left the Connacht Scór na nÓg Finals last
Saturday evening without winning anything.

On the night it was no surprise as the Leitrim entries just seemed that little
bit behind. The closest Leitrim got was in the Trath na gCeist where
Bornacoola were in second place just 6 marks behind the Sligo champions.
Fenagh Set Dancers could not have been far behind either. However,
Leitrims level of participation was as high as ever this year and no doubt
Leitrim will be back.

Now it is on to Scór Sinsear and preparations are underway in most clubs.

Bearna/Na Forbacha (Galway) 1-12
St Marys (Leitrim) 1-9

An experienced Bearna/Na Forbacha side just edged out a
gallant St Marys side by a single goal in the AIB Connacht
Club Junior Hurling Final played today on the astroturf in the
Breffni Park complex Cavan.

The sides were level on 26 minutes but crucially the Galway
champions scored 3 points before half time and extended their
lead to 6 points early in the 2nd half. To St Marys credit they
battled tremendously and reduced that lead to 3 points by the
52nd minute but diaster struck when they conceeded a soft goal 2
minutes later to leave themselves an up-hill battle. Leitrim”s
standard bearers reduced the deficit to 3 points again with a
late goal but time ran out and they were left rueing a number
of earlier missed chances. Credit must go to our Leitrim
representatives who just fell short of winning a Connacht title.
They more than equited themselves against a team from a
County accepted as being a hurling stronghold. This should
provide great motivation to the Leitrim Club and other clubs
in Leitrim and their mentors who continue to foster our hurling.

Hard luck but well done St Marys.
