Minor A Final St Marys-Kiltoghert v St Francis

In front of a large crowd of supporters in Pairc Sean St Marys-Kiltoghert added the minor A championship title to the league title they won earlier this year. In a very entertaining game St Francis opened the Scóring with a converted free by Daniel Egan in the first minute, five minutes later St Marys Colm OReilly opened Carricks account with a pointed free. In the 12th minute Egan put St Francis ahead again with a point from play which was quickly followed by a pointed free by OReilly. At this stage there was nothing between the teams. Egan scored another point from a free in the 21st minute and in the 24th minute Conor Farrell replied with a well executed point from play. Two more converted frees by Colm OReilly in the 26th and 27th minute saw St Marys take the lead but this was quickly banished when a well taken shot by St Francis Tomas Mulvey ended up in the carrick net. Now in injury time in the first half St Marys continued to win the midfield battle and scored 2 more points from play from Colm OReilly and Conor Farrell sending the teams in at half time on a scoreline of 0-7 to 1-03 in favour of St Marys. After the resumption points were exchanged at both ends but disaster struck 3 minutes in when a goalmouth error saw St Francis concede an ownÓgoal when the ball deflected off Tomas Mulvey and ended up in the net. St Francis quickly responded with a point from play by Martin Beirne. In the next 10 minutes it was all St Marys with 3 more points courtesy of Colm OReilly. 1 from play and 2 frees, but the never say die attitude of St Francis saw them get 2 more points in the 44th and 46th minute by Daniel Egan , 1 from play and 1 free. In a very intence game both sides continued to battle cheered on by their respective supporters with OReilly converting a free in the 48th minute while in injury time Joseph ORourke added his name to the Scóring list further extending the St Marys lead with a well taken point from play. Another converted free by Daniel Egan in the 63rd minute ended this contest and jubilliant scenes followed the final whistle as St Marys celebrated a well deserved victory .
Man of the match was Colm OReilly who notched up no less than 0-10 of St Marys scores and to whom we extend our sincere congratulations.

Leitrim County Finals Preview

All is ready for bumper weekend of Final action as Pairc Sheain Ui Heslin and Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada play host the deciders of the three main adult championship competitions in addition to the Blue Riband of underage football, the MFC A Final. A remarkable feature of this years finals at Senior, Intermediate and Junior A is that all finalists have already met in the competition at respective group stages. In a further coincidence, all of these games were part of the Round 3 series all teams having secured their places in the respective quarter finals by the conclusion of the Round 2 series. On a general note it is accurate to say that there was very little at stake in any of these previous encounters and as such previous results will count for little on this weekend. The law of averages would suggest that at least on of the results will be reversed this weekend. The burning question is which one is that likely to be???

Below we preview the adult games and we look forward to the sun shining on the most important weekend of Leitrim Club Football 2010 hosted by the excellent facilities of Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada and Ballinamore Sean O Heslins

Connacht Gold Leitrim Senior Football Championship Final 2010

The stage is set for the eagerly awaited showpiece of Leitrim Senior Club Football as reigning champions Glencar/Manorhamilton place their title on the line and chase a coveted 3-in-a row on Sunday next in Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada as they face down the considerable challenge of St. Marys-Kiltoghert.

The 2008 and 2009 champions have been the outstanding team in Leitrim Club Football since they captured the clubs third SFC title two years ago and are also the current ACL D1 crown holders having also contest the League decider in 2008. They have carried the mantle of favourites throughout this years competition with the calm assurance of a team that has learned and earned a winning habit that can often be very difficult to dismantle.

Challengers St. Marys have arrived at the final very much under the radar but have, nonetheless, been quite impressive on their run to the final, having taken care of the considerable challenge of neighbours Annaduff with a semi-final performance which suggests they have much greater intentions than just making up numbers on Sunday. Also chasing their fifth title, it is worth noting that they were reigning champions whenÓglencar/Manorhamilton defeated them in the 2008 semi-final with the considerable help of late goal.

As Glencar/Manorhamilton chase history on Sunday, they can be assured that their opponents will be equally determined to reclaim the county blue Riband and while Glencar/Manorhamilton may have taken a first strike by having defeated St Marys earlier in the Group stages, this will count for little at 3.30 on Sunday as the action commences and we look forward to a classic encounter in the chase for the Fenagh Perpetual Cup.

GWP Leitrim Intermediate Football Championship Final 2010

The clash of Drumkeerin and Aughawillan in the GWP Intermediate Final in Ballinamore on Saturday next at 4.45pm is eagerly awaited as the clubs which contested the 2008 and 2009 finals arrive at this stage again with the destination of the Frank Reynolds Memorial Cup as Leitrim Intermediate Football Champions and the considerable prize of a place in the 2011 Senior Football Championship Draw also on offer also.

Aughawillan would have been on a favourites shortlist from the outset of the competition with the experience of the last two seasons in ACL D1 under their belts. They have arrived at this stage on the back of an impressive run through the competition having included a defeat of their Saturday opponents at the Group stages and took care of the challenge of neighbours and 2008 champions Aughnasheelin at the semi-final stage. They will be hoping to go one better than last year but will be very wary of the Drumkeerin challenge.

Drumkeerin have improved steadily throughout the competition and are well poised to make a strong challenge for ultimate honours. With a potent mix of youth and experience they will be eager to atone for loss in the 2008 decider and avenge the earlier defeat by Aughawillan in the competition. They will probably carry the title of underdogs into the fray but that will not trouble them as they challenge earnestly for 2010 championship honours. It is worth noting that they have already disposed of the considerable challenge of another of the pre-competition favourites ACL D1 side Dromahair in the semi-final.

We look forward to rip-roaring contest on Saturday as the destination of the Intermediate crown is decided.

GWP Leitrim Junior A Football Championship Final 2010

Eslin and Leitrim Gaels, as the only first teams in the competition were favoured to arrive at the decider from the outset and so it has proved as the destination of the Dick Ellis Memorial Cup is up for decision in Ballinamore on Saturday at 3pm. A place in the Intermediate Football Championship 2011 also goes to the victors.

Eslin, having plied their trade in ACL D2 over the past two seasons, have contested the Finals of 2008 and 2009 at this level and will be very determined to make it a case of third time lucky this time. Seasoned championship campaigners at this level, they will be hoping that that the gods smile on them more favourably than in the past two seasons and that the efforts made at underage level over the past ten years will bear for them a rich harvest on Saturday. They have arrived at the final with a string of impressive victories, including the group stage scalp of their opponents this weekend.

Leitrim Gaels have made very steady progress over the past number of years and have reached their first ever Junior A Football Championship Final. Junior B Football Champions in 2007 and Junior C Football Champions of 2009 they arrive at this stage, having already had a bumper harvest this year. Although operating from ACL D4 they proved their credentials by capturing that particular title in July and added the ACL D5 title for good measure. They have surmounted all necessary hurdles in this years JFC A quietly and will be very determined to claim their biggest ever prize on Saturday.

Minor A Final St Franciss v St Marys -Kiltoghert

Next Sunday 26th of September all roads lead to Pairc Seán for County Final day. In the Senior Final its St Marys v Glencar- Manorhamilton and as the curtain raiser to this game its the Minor A Championship Final which also includes St Marys-Kiltoghert v St Francis.
St Francis topped the group on 9 points having played 5 games, winning 4 and drawing 1, St Marys-Kiltoghert were next on 7 points, winning 3, loosing 1 and drawing 1 and where was the draw……It was back on Thursday 5th of August in round 3 of the Championship when these two teams ended up level on a scoreline of 1-10 each so this should be the makings of a very tight and hard fought contest. St Francis are going for back to back Minor A Championship Titles while St Marys will be hoping to do the Double with their Senior Team something which they last achieved in 1995 when they also captured an Intermediate Title.  We wish both teams the best of luck on Sunday and also St Marys and Glencar-Manorhamilton in the Senior decider.

Ulster Senior Hurling Final

Sunday last saw the commencement of our under 17 development squad with a trial game in Leitrim Gaels GAA centre. 29 players turned up on the morning with apologies from a number of others. A second trial will take place on Saturday next at 10.00am. Subject to confirmation the venue will be Leitrim Gaels but please confirm with Attracta OReilly before Saturday. County minor Manager Damien Eams and his selectors will manÓge the squad.

Our under 14 school of excellence will commence on the first weekend in October. Full details in next weeks notes.

Child Welfare & Protection Courses

As promised to those who completed the Foundation coaching course earlier in the year we will conduct child welfare and protection workshops in October as follows. Places are limited on each course so those wishing to attend must register for the course one week in advance by contacting your club coaching officer. Courses are as follows.

Award 1
We will conduct an award 1 course in Pairc Sean in November. This course will take place over two weekends, Friday 12th & Saturday 13th and Friday 19th & Saturday 20th. All those wishing to attend must have foundation level completed and will be required to register for the course by Friday November 5th at the latest as places will be limited. Subsequent award 1 courses will be scheduled depending on demand.

Foundation award courses will commence in February 2011.

U-13 Regional competition

Cloone and Dromahair – County Champions 2010

Cloone and Dromahair – County Champions 2010

Cloone Ladies won the Senior County Championship on Sunday afternoon last in
Ballinamore, defeating a spirited St. Josephs side 3-06 to 1-09. The Cloone girls
registered their 3 goals in the first half and although St. Josephs battled right to the
final whistle, they couldnt quite narrow the margin. This was a great senior final
with both sides playing some great football. Congratulations to the Cloone girls and
management who thoroughly deserve this Senior title.

Dromahair captured the Intermediate Championship title after a hard fought victory
over St. Marys in the double header in Ballinamore on Sunday. A goal separated
the sides at half time but St. Marys equalised with a goal of their own at the
beginning of the second half. But Dromahair pulled away in the second quarter
of the second half and deservedly won the game on a score line of 2-14 to 2-5.

Minor B Championship Dromahair v Drumkerrin

Dromahair were crowned champions of the Minor B Dolan Cup Championship on friday evening last in front of a large crowd in Pairc Sean Mc Diarmada with a scoreline of 1-14 to 1-11 over their near neighbours Drumkeerin..
A minutes silence was observed by everyone prior to start of game as a mark of respect to the Grandfather of Drumkeerin players Felim and Patrick Mc Hugh who died earlier that morning RIP.
Drumkeerin were first to put their name on the score board with points from Jamie Langan, Cathal Mc Cauley and Seamus Mc Nama respectively before Dromahair chalked their first point from Mark Kelly. Dromahair then registered three more unanswered points from Jamie Conlon and two from Niall Hopper.
With brilliant displays of football displayed by both teams there was some wasteful shooting with the ball going the wrong side of the uprights as both teams were evenly matched.
Both teams added another point each from Cathal Mc Cauley Drumkeerin and Jamie Conlon Dromahair.. Fergal Mc Morrow got the ball on the 45m line and sent in a brilliant high ball towards goalmouth and landed in the back of the net through the hands of the keeper. Dromahair added two more points from Rory Kelly and Jamie Conlon and Drumkeerin added three from Glen KavanÓgh and two from Patrick Mc Partlin which left the sides going in at half time with a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-7 in favour of Dromahair.
In the second half Cian ClintonÓgot his first point and Martin Clancy got two all from play before Drumkeerins gifted Jamie Langan and Patrick Mc Partlin scored a point each form play. Martin Clancy was fouled around midfield, then took a quick free to Jamie Conlon who sent a tremendous ball sailing over the bar. Marin Clancy scored another from play. Drumkeerin added two more points from James Gallagher and Cathal Mc Cauley while Dromahairs Killian Torsney and Cian Clinton added one each to keep them on top. JohnÓgallagher with about four minutes to go got a pass to put the ball in the back of the net for his side but it was not enough as the final scoreline of 1-14 to 1-11 left Dromahair worthy winners. The cup was presented to the winning caption Jamie Conlon by Greta O”Neill daughter of the Late Ned Dolan in whose honor the cup is named after.

Leitrim GAA Championship Finals – venues times and officials announced

Ballinamore will host the Junior A and Intermediate Championship Finals on Saturday 25th September.  Throw in time for the Junior A Final is 3.00 pm with the Intermediate Final directly afterwards at 4.45.  Vincent McMorrow from the Glencar Manorhamilton GAA club will referee the Junior A Final between Eslin and Leitrim Gaels while Seamus Mulhern from the St Marys club will referee the Intermediate Final between Drumkeerin and Aughawillan.

Pairc Sean will host the Minor Final between St Marys and St Francis on Sunday 26th September.  Throw in at 1.45 and Ray McBrien from the Aughavas Club is the appointed referee.  St Marys and Glencar Manorhamilton will contest the Senior Final (Throw in 3.30) and Brendan Sammon From the Aughnasheelin Club has the honour of refereeing the big match.

GAA Respect Initiative

The GAA Respect Initiative Booklet was launched to clubs at a Coaching and Games Development meeting in the Bush Hotel on Wednesday September 1st.

It was explained at the meeting, for the purpose of beginning our implementation of this Initiative in 2010, that at all games in this years Under 12 Football Championship the following protocall from the Initiative will be observed:

Players and Mentors of each team will line up in the centre of the field and exchange handshakes with the opposition players and Mentors and the Match Official(s) respectively immediately in advance of the fixture and at its conclusion.  Supporters will be kept off the playing area for the duration of the game.
Mentors will wear specific bibs (distributed at the meeting) to advertise the initiative.  Posters (also distributed) should be displayed in a prominant position to advise the spectators of what is expected.
Clubs were asked to identify one person who will take reponsibility for implementation of the above in all Under 12 Championship Games.

It should be pointed out that are many other features in this publication that are worth reading and implementing at club and indeed county level beyond 2010 and all are advised to consider strongly taking the suggestions on board into the future.

It is hoped that we will sow seeds among our Under 12 players, mentors and officials throughout September 2010 which will bear a rich harvest into the future!!

Roundup of Championship Action and Weekend Fixtures

Senior Championship Finalists

St Marys qualified for the Senior Football Championship Final by defeating neighbours Annaduff on a score-line of 0-12 to 0-5 on Saturday evening last in Pairc Sean. They will be in search of a Minor and Senior Double on Sunday 26th September. Glencar Manorhamilton will be their opponents on the day after they defeated Mohill in the other semi-final with a hard fought 0-11 to 0-7 win. Glencar Manorhamilton are on course for an historic 3 in-a-row – something which has only ever been achieved by Gorvagh (1924/25/26/27), Cloone (1946/47/48), Melvin Gaels (1959/60/61/62), Ballinamore Sean OHeslins (1967/68/69) and Aughawillan (1992/93/94). Incidentally, the county finalists have emerged out of what can now be considered the “lucky” – Senior Championship Group 4 – with Manor topping the group and Marys group runners up.

Credit must be paid to the defeated semi-finalists Mohill and Annaduff who were both magnanimous in defeat. They can be justifiably proud of their performances in the championship and in reaching the semi final stages. They are certainly 2 teams to watch for in the future.

Intermediate Championship Finalists

Drumkeerin and Aughawillan make a welcome return to the Intermediate Championship Final. Drumkeerins first half performance laid the foundation for their victory over Dromahair (1-7 to 1-5) while Aughawillan were made fight all the way by a battling Aughnasheelin side (0-11 to 1-6). Aughawillan lost out in the Intermediate County Final last year to Cloone while Drumkeerin lost to Aughnasheelin in 2008.

Hard luck to Dromahair and Aughnasheelin who just fell short on the day.

Relegation Finals

Allen Gaels retained their senior status for next year by defeating Melvin Gaels on a 2-8 to 1-13 scoreline. Melvin Gaels make the drop to Intermediate next year when they can hopefully welcome back some influential players from injury. Meanwhile in the Intermediate relegation Final Annaduff made the drop to the Junior grade when Fenagh beat them 1-11 to 0-7

Junior A Football Championship Semi Finals

This weekend the finalists for the Junior A Championship should be known with Carrigallen taking on Leitrim Gaels and Eslin facing Drumkeerin. Eslin and Leitrim Gaels are considered hot favourites but Carrigallen and Drumkeerin are more than capable of causing upsets. Junior B Football Championship Quarter Finals

Glencar Manorhamilton and Aughavas will be interesting observers at this weekends quarter final games as both teams have qualified for the semi-finals. Glencar Manorhamilton await the winners of the St Marys versus Dromahair game while Aughavas play the winners of the quarter final between St. Osnatts and Kiltubrid. Both games this Saturday in Drumshanbo – St Marys V Dromahair at 4.30 and St Osnatts V Kiltubrid at 6.00

Junior C Championship

This competition commenced last weekend and Mohill, Sean OHeslins, Drumreilly and Glenfarne Kiltyclogher got off to winning ways.
