You are probably aware that Kilglass Gaels G.A.A. Club in Roscommon are the Connacht “Field of Dreams” Champions and the overall national winner will be announced on 29th October.

This is only a little over two weeks away so to help Kilglass Gaels win this magnificent prize they would appreciate and encourage people in Leitrim to get behind Kilglass Gaels and give them one final push to get them over the line.

Voting can be done on line at www.kelloggs.ie or by text to 53799, or simply buy a Box of Kelloggs Cornflakes with the coupons on it and post them off.

The remaining four fixtures in Division 2 are scheduled for this weekend all with throw in times of 5pm on Saturday evening.  The fixtures are as follows with home teams named first.

Gortletteragh v Eslin

Cloone v Aughavas

Drumkeerin v Ballinaglera

Glencar/Manorhamilton v Bornacoola

Gortletteragh and Eslin are already safe as regards relegation.  In the other 3 games all teams are in the relegation zone with the exception of Bornacoola who were crowned Division 2 League Winners earlier in the year

Cloone (5 points) simply have to win at home to neighbours Aughavas or they will be relegated with Ballinaglera (2 points) who are already relegated.  Aughavas, Drumkeerin and Glencar Manorhamilton face a nervous evening as all three are locked on 6 points.  If teams are level on points at the conclusion of games relegation will be decided as follows:

Head to head result if two teams tied

score Difference if 3 or more tied.

Meanwhile in Division 1 it is still all to play for at the top with a number of teams still in with a chance of a top two place for the League Final. At the bottom Kiltubrid are already relegated with no points from 9 outings and the big question is who will join them with a number of teams in danger as we approach Round 10 this weekend. We anticipate great excitement going into the last round of games the following weekend where relegation and top two placings will be finally decided.  A nail biting end to a great league season is in store!

Leitrim SHC Final

St. Mary’s 2 – 9
Gortletteragh 0 – 11

Despite a stout hearted effort by Gortletteragh on Saturday in Carrick-on-Shannon, St. Mary’s still claimed their twelfth Leitrim senior hurling crown in succession and even though St. Mary’s had four points to spare at the end, the outcome was always in the balance.
Full-forward Fergal Carroll got the decisive score for St. Mary’s when hammering to the net and edging his side in front by 2 – 6 to 0 – 5 within 20 seconds of the restart.
Following that Gortletteragh closed the gap with St. Mary’s to a goal by the 42nd minute after Morgan Quinn tapped over three frees and pointed from play. Try as they might, Gortletteragh just could not get the goal they craved. Gary Coone in the St. Mary’s goal made three outstanding saves and this along with Clement Cunniffe coming into his own when he was needed with vital scores, ensured that St. Mary’s captured the title.
In the unique presentations afterwards, Paddy Phelan, Hurling Board Chairman showed off a new Cup presented by the Cardiff/Kennedy families from the Kiltubrid Club and Paddy said the Cup was to be named the ‘Stephen Dorrigan Memorial Cup’ for the Leitrim Senior Hurling Championship. He gave a glowing account of the exploits of Stephen on the Hurling fields throughout the country in the Leitrim and Gortletteragh Jerseys and it was with great pride that Pauric McWeeney accepted the Cup on behalf of this great St. Mary’s team.
The Man of the Match Trophy was then presented by Paddy to Conor Beirne, the Gortletteragh full back. This trophy was to be known as the Philly McGuinness Man of the Match Trophy
