In a pioneering collaboration, the Leitrim Ladies Gaelic footballers have joined forces with Leitrim GAA in organising the next January 50 Mile Challenge, the third in the highly successful series.
The preparatory work has been underway for months, this time with the full involvement of the ladies organisation led by its Chairperson, Kathy Butler. It is believed to be the first such collaboration between the two organisations in the country and the Leitrim ladies will share in the funds raised so as to enhance their teams’ activities.
The lime green beanie hat is illustrated by Kathy Butler with the Leitrim Tourism logo on one side and the Leitrim GAA crest on the other. Last January the yellow beanie hat worn by participants was a familiar sight in the county enabling fellow participants to readily recognise each other.
All those who sign up as fundraisers will receive the new beanie hat in addition to a Leitrim GAA themed fundraising page. As before Leitrim County Council are the major sponsors of the Challenge and are working closely with the organisers to highlight county Leitrim during the campaign as a great place to live in, work in, relocate to, invest in and of course to visit and enjoy.
Last January one of the most successful promotions of the 50 mile challenge was the short Ambassador videos by personalities including Charlie McGettigan and Carole Coleman set against the county’s beautiful outdoor scenes. The 2022 collection of videos amassed almost 500,000 views. For the forthcoming challenge there will be nine Challenge Ambassadors who have recorded videos made by Brian Duignan of Carrick-on-Shannon and with the financial support of Leitrim County Council.
An exciting new initiative this year is the inclusion of a large number of prominent Companies who are getting behind the event as they encourage health & wellbeing through corporate participation. The participating companies come from all sectors and all corners of the county and surrounding areas. If you own or work for a company and would like to be involved please email 50miles@leitrimgaa.ie
Leitrim County Council are running a Recruitment and Enterprise Expo in the Landmark Hotel on 27th January to align with the last week of the 50 Miles challenge. A large number of high profile companies will be participating in this Expo.
Participation in the challenge is open to all community based organisations, government departments and local groups who are more than welcome to harness the uplifting energy that this event offers and to encourage members to get out and about for the month. All participants are encouraged to share their activity on social media and in the very engaging Facebook group – regular exercise & social participation is vital for physical and mental health.
Globally the Leitrim diaspora will be out in force with us this January and we are delighted to announce a new group in London to compliment our existing group in New York. The London group is headed up by ex Leitrim footballer David O’Connor who hails from Dromod. Last year we had participation and donations from 65 countries and for January we welcome more groups and individual participants as the Leitrim brand spreads globally.
This event aims to give our beautiful county a national & global focus for the month of January as a wonderful place to explore, experience and enjoy as you live in, work in or relocate to.
The formal launch of the Leitrim January 50 Mile Challenge is set for the Lough Rynn Castle Hotel on the evening of Thursday, December 8.
Sign up for the hat will be available here on LeitrimGAA.ie from Thursday next & a new Facebook Group similar to last year will be announced.

Living Well Free HSE Programme
Health and WellbeingThe late James McGovern, Drumcondra, Dublin and Aughavas, County Leitrim.
GeneralLeitrim GAA is very saddened to learn of the death of the late James McGovern, formerly of Aughavas, County Leitrim. The McGovern Family has been imbued in the fortunes of Leitrim GAA over a period of time that has been continuous since the glory days of the early 1990s. They first came to prominence by agreeing to become the sponsors of the Leitrim Senior Football team in the early days of sponsorship names being allowed on jerseys, as the team’s rise to prominence hit a high with the capturing of the Connacht SFC title in 1994. A multiplicity of images that continue to be reproduced over the decades since are ingrained in the consciousness, with ‘McGovern Aughavas’ forever associated with that glorious era. James was the central figure in this deal at that time.
Beyond that, the McGoverns have continued their association with Leitrim GAA, the main stand in Avant Money Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada renamed the McGovern Aughavas Stand in the late noughties and more recently, the naming rights of the Leitrim GAA McGovern Aughavas Centre of Excellence are attributed to the generosity of James’s brother, Tony McGovern, based in London.
Of course, James and Family have not forgotten their more local roots and for many of Aughavas’s most successful recent years, particularly around their Leitrim SFC success of 2000, the name McGovern found a most prominent and proud placement on the front of their native jerseys.
Leitrim GAA will always be most appreciative of the contribution of James McGovern to Leitrim GAA. We know we made him proud throughout that glorious era of the early to mid-1990s.
James McGovern is deeply regretted by his wife Peggy, children Aidan, Vera, Nuala, Andy and Eileen, daughters-in-law Christina and Louise, sons-in-law Willie, Tristan and Ciarán, grandchildren Sean, Nikita, Karla, Henry, Leo, Bill, Pete, Jodi, Séamus, Tómas, Euan, Grace, Pierce and Charlie, brothers Tom, Gerry and Tony, in-laws, extended family, friends and neighbours. He will be laid to rest in Dardistown Cemetery, following 11.30am funeral mass at St Vincent de Paul Church, Marino, on Wednesday morning.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.

The Late Dessie Kieran, Main Street, Ballinamore, Co Leitrim.
RIPDessie Kieran, Ballinamore Seán O’Heslins RIP
The death has occurred of Dessie Kieran, one of the stalwarts of Ballinamore Seán O’Heslin’s since his playing days in the late 1940s and through the 1950s. Dessie was the goalkeeper on the famous Ballinamore team which won the 1956 Senior Championship, the club’s first at the time, after what seemed an eternity from 1939. That victory was the highlight of Dessie’s generation and was spoken about with pride ever after. Pictured below is a photo of the Ballinamore team of 1956 with Dessie third from the right in the back row.
While still a player, Dessie was very involved in the administration of the club along with his brother, the late Brendan. Between them, they were central to the running of the club in the 1950s and 1960s. Dessie was club Treasurer from 1953-1955 and again in 1958. He was also Assistant Treasurer from 1964-1968. He was a mine of information on anything to do with the club, and indeed the town, and a visit to the chemist shop run by himself and his wife, Sheelah, would yield the answers to many questions.
Dessie was particularly proud to see his son Paul play a central role in Leitrim’s great Connacht Senior Championship win in 1994 and in Ballinamore’s Senior title wins in the 1980s and 1990.
The club expresses sympathy to Dessie’s wife Sheelah and sons Paul, John and Mark and the extended family. Reposing at Smith’s Funeral Home, High St. Ballinamore N41 TD62 on Wednesday evening from 6pm until 8pm. Funeral Mass in St. Patrick’s Church, Ballinamore on Thursday at 12 noon followed by burial in Oughteragh cemetery, Ballinamore.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh duine de laochra chlub Sheáin Ui Eislin. Leaba i measc na naomh agus na peileadóirí go raibh age.
