Over the weekend Leitrims Ladies Connacht champions encountered tough opposition at the
all Ireland semi-final stage of the championship. Last years junior C singles all Ireland champion, Mary Shanley travelled all the way to Kilkenny city on Saturday to play Marie T ONeill. Mary had to bow out to a much more experienced player. Her Kilkenny opponent
dominated the game through out. Also on Saturday at Roscommon Ciara McLoughlin battled with great heart against a very accomplished player in Aoife McCarthy of Westmeath. The doubles pairing of Michelle Gaffney & Lenora Nellis also found the same Aoife MCarthy with doubles partner Niamh Egan a formidable duo.

Allianz NHL Div 4 – Round 5

Monaghan 2 – 11
Leitrim 1 – 12
Lady luck certainly did not smile on the Leitrim hurlers on Sunday afternoon in Ballinamore when they took on Allianz NHL Division 4 unbeaten side and table toppers Monaghan.
Monaghan came from behind to grab a Scórcely deserved victory over Leitrim with goals by Sean Leonard and Brian Phelan in the last five minutes of an entertaining tie.

Prior to that Leitrim led this encounter from the 24th minute until Phelans strike in the 70th minute, which put the Farney men, who had been facing an unexpected defeat, ahead again. After controlling the exchanges for 46 minutes it certainly was very disappointing for Leitrim to surrender the win in the closing stages of this contest.

Despite the defeat it was undoubtedly Leitrims best all round display in their five games of the league, even though only slightly better than their come from behind win over South Down a few weeks ago in Carrick.

All the Leitrim backs performed well and curtailed the Monaghan forwards to limited Scóring opportunities until the crucial final five minutes while Vinnie McDermott at fullback and young Sean McWeeney at wing back were rock solid.

Keith Connolly turned in an excellent display at midfield while his partner Michael Poniard put in a tremendous amount of good work. All the Leitrim forwards worked hard with Ian Bermingham, Clement Cunniffe and Liam Burns to the fore.
It is hoped that all our suspended, injured and unavailable players get back to training now for the Lory Meagher Cup and build on this great hearted performance.

Leitrim: Paul McKiernan, Kevin McGrath, Vincent McDermott, David Tiernan, Morgan Quinn, Sean McWeeney, Kieran Boyle 0 – 1, Keith Connolly 0 – 2, Michael Poniard, Paraic McWeeney, Clement Cunniffe, Ian Bermingham 0 – 6(2f.), Michael Burns, Liam Burns 1 – 0, Cathal McCrann 0 – 1. Sub Kevin OConnor 0 – 1 for M. Burns (12 mins).
Referee: Ashley Stapleton (Laois).

Leitrim Footballers had a hard earned but well deserved victory over Carlow in Dr Cullen Park on Satruday last (27/3/10) on a scoreline of 1-16 to 1-12.

Leitrim raced into a 1-5 lead within the opening 15 minutes before Carlow got on the scoresheet with a 17th minute free.  The visitors made excellent use of the first half wind advantage and at the interval they held a 6 point lead (1-11 to 1-5).

Carlow made every effort to claw back Leitrims lead in the second half but the closest they came was within 3 points of the visitors.  The loss of two of their players on second yellow card offences did not help their cause and Leitrim were reduced to 14 men late on when right half-back James Glancy received a second yellow card.

This was an excellent victory for the Leitrim team and next up is a local derby with neighbours Longford next Saturay 3/4/10 (Easter Saturday) in Páirc Seán.  Throw in time is 2.30 and all support would be greatly appreciated.

Allianz NHL Div 4 – Round IV

Longford 3-20
Leitrim 1 -08

Leitrim and Longford played out a very disappointing Allianz NHL Division 4 in Pearse Park, Longford on Sunday last.

scores were level on a number of occasions early on and little by little Longford began to pull clear and when Conor Burns got a red card after an altercation with his opponent, Leitrim were trailing and facing an uphill battle and went in at half time 7 points down.
On resuming, Leitrim upped their game but missed a number of chances early on. The game then turned into a very scrappy affair and Longford duly took the honours with some long range points. Leitrim badly missed Clement Cunniffe through injury.

Leitrim: Paul McKiernan, Kevin McGrath, Niall Guckian, Shane Guckian, Seán McWeeney, Michael Poniard, Kieran Boyle, Vincent McDermott, Keith Connolly, Paraic McWeeney, Ian Bermingham, Conor Burns, Michael Burns, Mark Hayes, Liam Burns, Subs Gary Coone for Mick Burns, David Tiernan for Kieran Boyle(inj), Morgan Quinn for P. 2010 Championship Draws

There was great excitement in the Bush Hotel last night as the draws for the Senior, Intermediate and Junior A Championships took place. This year, the Senior Championship is sponsored by Connacht Gold and Leitrim GAA is delighted to welcome them on board. GWP continue their association with Leitrim GAA and sponsor the Intermediate and Junior A Championships for the coming year.

The business end of the football season now commences for all clubs in the County and as ever supporters can look forward to some mouth watering encounters throughout our championship summer of 2010. The Junior A, Intermediate and Senior Championships all have 12 teams (4 groups with 3 teams in each).  The top two teams in each group will advance to the quarter final stages, while the losing team in each group will enter the relegationÓgroup.

Below we take a look at the three championship draws which can be viewed in PDF format elsewhere on this website.

Junior Championship

Of the 12 teams in the Junior A Championship, two of them are first string teams, eight are second string teams and two are third string teams. Groups 1 and 4 are made up of all 2nd string teams and with the standard so evenly matched we can expect evenly contested matches in these two groups. InÓgroup 3 Annaduffs 3rd string will compete against the 2nd string teams of Drumkerrin and Allen Gaels – a group that looks on paper too close to call. Certainly the group which generated the most excitement was Group 2 which consists of 1st string teams Leitrim Gaels and Eslin who of course were last years Junior A Championship beaten finalists. Add to the mix their neighbours St Marys and this group is sure to generate a lot of interest and excitement during the summer.

Intermediate Championship

The Intermediate Championship threw up some interesting ties also. It consists of nine first teams and three second string teams. You would have to strongly fancy a 1st team club to claim the Intermediate Championship since they can draw on all their player resources. The last 2nd string team to win the Intermediate Championship was Glencar Manorhamilton back in 2005.
Group 1 includes last years beaten finalists Aughawillan and the 2008 beaten finalists, Drumkeerin. Both teams have the potential to deliver but will face stiff opposition from a proud Annaduff outfit.
Group 2 sees a much fancied Gortletteragh paired against St Marys who always produce a strong second team and North Leitrims Ballinaglera who have real potential. This group looks too close to call.
Group 3 is made up of all 1st teams in Fenagh-St Caillins, Aughnasheelin and Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher. This group is sure to produce some fantastic games and the two teams to advance will have certainly earned it.
Group 4 sees newly promoted Junior A Champions Aughavas battle against North Leitrim neightbours Glencar Manorhamilton and last years beaten semi-finalists Dromahair. This group could go down to the wire.

Senior Championship

In the Senior Championship, all teams will be hoping to put a stop to Glencar Manorhamiltons hopes of doing 3 in a row and the County Champions will have it all to do in the group stages as they were drawn with South Leitrim neighbours and rivals Allen Gaels and St Marys in Group 4 which was dubbed the Group of Death!

InÓgroup 1 Annaduff and Bornacoola will renew local rivalries as they were pitted against each other.  However, the neighbours wouldnt want to take their eye of the ball as Drumreilly could upset the odds by waiting in the long grass!

Group 2 will be an intensely contested group with Mohill, Melvin Gaels and Sean OHeslins. On past form all three teams will have realistic hopes of becoming 2010 County Champions so expect titanic battles in this group and call the two to advance if you dare!

Group 3 sees last years beaten Senior finalists Carrigallen paired against the 2009 Intermediate Champions Cloone and Championship specalists Kiltubrid. If Cloone can re-produce their 2009 form – they are sure to cause trouble for both Kiltubrid and Carrigallen.

While none of the teams will be looking past the group stages that doesnt stop you making your own predications on who you think will qualify from each of the groups! ThenÓgo a few steps further and check out the quarter and semi final pairings and make your predications on who will be crowned Senior, Intermediate and Junior A Champions for 2010.

Looking forward to the 2010 Leitrim Championships and the very best of luck to all our teams.

Leitrim registered their second win of the NFL Division 4 when they proved too strong for London in their home fixture with the exiles yesterday (Sunday 21/3/10).  Leitrim excelled in all sectors of the field and recorded an impressive 15 point victory (25 points to Londons 0-10)

The home side started impressively and raced into a 0-5 to no score lead in the first 10 minutes thanks to scores from James Glancy (Glencar/Manor), Shane Canning, James Glancy (St. Marys) and Wayne McKeon.  The Exiles responded with fine scores from Johnny Niblock, Kevin McMenamin and Derek Hayden but Leitrim responded assertively by Scóring nine unanswered points to take a commanding 0-15 to 0-4 lead at the half time whistle.

An incredible night for Leitrim in the Connacht Scór Finals in Loughrea, Co Galway on Saturday. Leitrim topped last years record of 5 titles by winning 6 of the 8 events. This is Leitrims best representation ever in an All Ireland Scór Sinsear finals since 1984 when Leitrim won no less than seven of the eight events. The 6 titles won seen the County top a record 100 Connaught titles in the 40th year of Scór. Leitrim was also the only county to be represented in all 8 categorys and in turn was awarded with the award of Connaught County of 2010. The Cormac MacGiolla Cup was presented to Rúnaí Maura Mulvey and Cathaoirleach Séan O Suilleabháin by Ailbhe McGill.

Glencar-Manorhamilton first to the stage won the Figure Dance beating the 8 ladies from Kilglass, Co Roscommon. This is the clubs 8th trip in a row to Killarney and they will be hoping to go the extra mile and bring the title back once more having last won it in 2002.
Elaine Duignan from Ballinamore gave a fabulous rendition of the Rocks of Bawn but Claire Igoe of Corofin took the Solo Singing title back to Galway.
Leitrim Gaels had every foot in the hall tapping with their quirky and modern take of arrangements for Instrumental Music sailing through to the All-Ireland finals. They last featured in the finals in 2008.
Louise Staunton from Bornacoola won Recitation, she also went through in Question Time and has doubled her chances of bringing a medal home from the All-Irelands.
Ballad Group was one of the tightest competitions of the night with 4 of the 5 counties taking part. St Marys clinched the title with their superb harmonies and contrast of songs.
Question Time went to the knowledgable Bornacoola club after a nail biting 4 rounds head to head with Claremorris Co. Mayo to break the equal marks throughout.
The fantastic and witty Seán OHeslins won the Novelty Act. Having won the All-lreland in 2009 the club will be hoping to repeat their sucess again in 2010.
Set Dancing was won by Abbeyknockmoy, Co Galway, a narrow call by judges between our ownÓglenar-Manor and Mayo, all giving fine performances.
