Connacht SFC Leitrim v London – Match Ticket Details

The 2022 Connacht SFC commences on Sunday, April 17, in Ruislip as Leitrim and London battle go head to head for a place in the Connacht SFC semi-final. The match ticket details have been published and are as follows:

Stand Tickets €30

Terrace Tickets €25

Student/OAP rates are the same as for Adults 

Juveniles Under 16 are free of charge on the terrace only. Juveniles in the stand must have a ticket and pay the adult rate.

“To those attending tomorrow’s Allianz League match vs. Leitrim please note that there will be parking restrictions on all of the roads in the immediate vicinity of the ground as Markievicz Park is in a residential area and along a road with cycle paths.

Please have respect for our neighbours and other road users when parking.
Do not park up on footpaths, across driveways or obstructing cycle lanes. Please cooperate with stewards and Gardai at all times.
Parking is available in the Sligo Development Centre car park behind Londis on Cleveragh Rd, off Pearse Rd (F91 W2KH) – about 5 mins walk to the ground or near the roundabout off the N4 at Summerhill College (F91 D5YF) about 20 mins walk from the ground – see details on the graphic below.”

Memorial Mass for Packie McGarty & Cathal Flynn

Packie McGarty RIP  & Cathal Flynn RIP

Last year during Covid, Leitrim lost two of its greatest footballers; Packie McGarty, RIP and Cathal Flynn, RIP.  It was so sad that two people who were so admired in Leitrim and indeed loved by all who knew them were not permitted a proper funeral due to lockdown restrictions.

We have decided  to have a Memorial Mass for Packie  and Cathal, RIP on Saturday, 9th April at 11.00am in St Patrick’s Parish Church, Mohill, Co. Leitrim.

It will be a GAA gathering in every sense and  everyone is welcome to attend

Gaeltacht Grants Draw 2022

Is deas a fheiceáil go bhfuil an méid sin daoine óga ag dul go dtí an Ghaeltacht chun a gcuid Ghaeilge a fheabhsú. Buíochas do na buachaillí agus na cailíní go léir a chuir isteach ar na scoláireachtaí agus comhghairdeas do na buaiteoirí.

There was a large number of applicants for the Gaeltacht grants offered by Coiste Contae Liatroma. Leitrim County Board GAA was pleased to receive support from Leitrim County Council for this project. Grants of between €200 will be awarded to the twelve winners below on return from their chosen Gaeltacht course.

Supporters Club Bus to Carlow

Leitrim GAA Supporters Club will charter a bus to next Sunday’s Allianz League Division 4 League encounter with Carlow in Netwatch Cullen Park, Carlow if there are sufficient numbers interested. Anybody who wishes to book a seat on the bus is advised to contact Jerome McWeeney ASAP at 0876370051. Bookings need to be confirmed by Thursday evening latest.

Additional Gaeltacht Grants

Cumann na bhFiann are offering discount vouchers for up to €300 to students who make new bookings on some of their courses before 21st March. There are €200 vouchers for their two-week courses and €300 for their three-week courses. Parents who are interested, should email immediately to administrator.leitrim@gaa.ie giving your name and phone number and you will be contacted. Vouchers will be given on a first come basis, based on receipt of email. See attached list of dates and colleges with relevant offers.

These vouchers are separate from the grant applications already announced, and will be dealt with as additional offers.

 

 

The Late James (Jimmy) O’Donnell

The death has occurred of James (Jimmy) O’Donnell

Oldfield, Knocknacarra, Galway and formerly Manorhamilton, Leitrim, Ballinrobe, Mayo and Ballyjamesduff, Cavan and retired Ulster Bank. Pre-deceased by his parents Anthony and Nancy and his sister Bríd. Sadly missed by his loving family, his sisters Mary Kerrane, Catherine Brogan, and Ann de Paor, his brother Anthony, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, extended family, former colleagues and friends.

Funeral took place at  St. John the Apostle Church, Knocknacarra, Galway for Requiem Mass on Thursday, 3rd March, at 10.15am and afterwards to The New Cemetery, Bohermore.

 

Another star of the great Leitrim team of the 50’s Jimmy O Donnell  passed away this week.

While McGarty & Flynn stole the headlines Jimmy was a very accomplished midfielder who could play with  the best of them.

When Leitrim played Galway in the famous Connaught Final in 1958 Jimmy made the headlines. No less a sportswriter than Peadar O Brien of the Irish Press stated in his match report ‘ A word of praise for the wonderful find in Leitrim football, former minor Jim O Donnell. At midfield with Mick Mullen he gave McDonagh & Evers a trying time’. Said McDonagh afterwards ‘ O Donell gave me a tough hour. This lad will go places’. Some praise from the great Galway midfielder Mattie McDonagh.

Jimmy was never too far away from the headlines. In the National Football League game v Meath in 1958 which Leitrim won 4-9 to 3-5, the match report said ‘ devastating at midfield, Mick Mullen and Jimmy O Donnell  went into their work with demoniacal fury’.  An interesting fact from this game was all Leitrim scores came from play.

Another brilliant display from Jimmy in the National  Football League  game v Longford which Leitrim won 0-11 to 2-3 in 1958 was reported in the Irish  Independent as follows, ‘the towering midfielder Jimmy O Donnell won control of the vital midfield exchanges’. On that same match a match report by Liathdroim Abu   Jimmy got a special headline ‘O Donnell Shows Up’  and went on to say ,’ O Donnell fielded a long kickout, held the leather firmly, and landed a point from fifty yards – a glorious effort’.

Reading through all the paper cuttings there is no doubt Jimmy O Donnell played a huge part on the team in lifting the spirits of the Leitrim people throughout the  50’s and could hold his place amongst the best footballers in the country.

He was a good one and the paper cuttings are there to back it up.

The Late Hugh McCartin RIP – Drumreilly, County Leitrim.

Leitrim GAA are saddened to learn of the death of Hugh Mc Cartin, Drumreilly, Co Leitrim. The Late Hugh is brother of Martin, current Leitrim GAA Treasurer. Leitrim GAA are saddened to learn of the death of Joe Mc Cartin, Lisanover, Ballyconnell, Cavan and Drumreilly, Co Leitrim. The Late Joe is brother of Martin, current Leitrim GAA Treasurer.
