This weekend sees the start of league competition for Division 1 & 2 teams.  This year, Gallogly Catering sponsor the All County Leagues (Divisions 1-5).  Below we take a brief look at the games.

In Division 1, Glencar Manorhamilton take the first step in their quest to retain their league title with a re-match of last years league final against Kiltubrid.  This match is a home game for Manor and last years league encounter resulted in a draw so expect a tight game here.

Melvin Gaels host Ballinamore SOH in Kinlough and the loss of some key players to Melvin Gaels and the progress of Ballinamore in the Senior ranks could see a tight encounter here.  Melvin Gaels are extremely difficult to beat at home but Ballinamore SOH will test them.

Allen Gaels and St Marys (both under new local management teams) will be hoping to gain bragging rights in a local derby match to be played in Drumshanbo – youd be wise to make a prediction on this one!

Dromahair (the oldest club in Leitrim) make their debut in the Senior ranks against Aughawillan who just survived in Division 1 on the last day of the season last year.  If Dromahair show the same pride as they did in gaining promotion and in the Celebrity Bainisteoir competition – they will not be found wanting in Division 1.

Annaduff and Carrigallen are both under new management.  Michael Moyles (Former Mayo Player and Sligo Minor Manager) and Dominic Corrigan (Former Sligo and Fermanagh Manager)  are at the helm in both clubs respectively and big things are expected in both camps.  Although Carrigallen are newly promoted – if their performance in the County Final last year is anything to go by – they will be tough opposition for all Division 1 sides this year.  However, Annaduff are extremely difficult to get the better off on home soil so an interesting game in store by all accounts!

Drumreilly host Mohill in the last Division 1 game and perhaps the loss of Declan Maxwell to Drumreilly and the return of Shane Canning to Mohill may be the difference in this one.

In Division 2 Bornacoola and Aughnasheelin will be hoping to make a quick return to Division 1 and while Bornacoola should account for Eslin in their game, Aughnasheelin will have to be at their best to match Aughavas who have home advantage and will still be on a high after winning the Junior A Championship.  2009 Intermediate Champions Cloone host promoted Ballinaglera who were Division 3 League Finalists last year – this game should be a cracker.  Newly promoted Glencar Manor make the short trip to Drumkeerin while Glenfarne Kiltyclogher make the long journey to Gortletteragh and as all 4 sides are evenly matched – tight games should be on the cards in both.

AGM of Leitrim Hurling Board

At a well attended AGM of the Hurling Board held recently in The Bush Hotel, the new Cathaoirleach Joe Flynn and Rúnai Diarmuid Sweeney attended and pledged their support for Hurling within the County in the coming years

The three Officers Cathaoirleach Paddy Phelan, Rúnai Michael Doorigan and Cisteoir Martin Cunniffe were all re elected unanimously.

The meeting undertook to have more hurling games throughout the year and hoped that the inclusion of Michael Doorigan on the Fixtures committee will aid the smooth running of all competitions. The inclusion of hurling on the Master fixtures Plan will facilitate this also.

New Cavan Manager Brendan Nelligan enjoyed a winning debut at Breffni Park, helped by profligate Leitrim recording 15 wides.
With former London star Kevin Downes to the fore , Cavan opened up a 0-3 to 0-2 lead in the opening quarter.
Clement Cunniffe gave Leitrim a foothold but their limitations up front soon became all too obvious.
Cavans frontmen laboured initially before enjoying a 13-minute purple patch in which they notched 1-5 without reply.
However, four minutes after Mark McEntees 28th-minute goal for Cavan, Dave McGovern raised a green flag to give Leitrim hope.
But Cavan regained control and with Bernard Gaffney shining, hit five points without reply. Leitrim refused to cave in and got a late consolation through Shane Kiernans goal.  Final score Cavan 1.17, Leitrim 3.4.

There followed two rounds of tie-breakers and Ballinameen answered all of their questions again.

The winners were

Amhranaíocht Aonair: Shamrocks Uíbh Fháilí
Ceol Uirlise: Millstreet, Corcaí

Following a one-point defeat by Clare last week, Wicklow got their League show on the road at Aughrim yesterday with a seven-point win over Leitrim.

Centre-forward Tony Hannon led the Wicklow charge, Scóring an impressive 1-4, with his opportunist second-half goal proving crucial.

Up to then Mick ODwyers men had laboured to shake off a Leitrim side that always controlled the vital midfield play through the work of Tomas Beirne and David OConnor.

The goal stretched Wicklows lead to 1-7 to 0-5 and inspired them to play their best football of the game over the next 10 minutes as they increased their lead to 1-12 to 0-6 with further points by Seanie Furlong, Paddy Dalton, centre-back Brian McGrath and a lovely brace from LeightonÓglynn, who had moved to corner-forward in the second half.

Although Hannon scored first for Wicklow with a point from a free, the westerners had the better of the exchanges in the first quarter, leading their opponents twice with points by midfielder OConnor and free-taking centre-forward Michael Foley.

They were ahead 0-3 to 0-2 after 15 minutes.

Minutes later Glynn picked out Dalton with a great cross-field pass. Dalton fired in a sizzling shot from 30 metres, but Leitrims Dermot Reynolds got down at the near post to make a super save, but at the expense of a 45. Wicklow lead 0-6 to 0-4 at the break before Hannon hit the back of the net in the second half to secure the win for ODwyers side.

Leitrim scorers: M Foley 0-3 (0-3f), D OConnor, D ODonnell, D Gilhooly, E Mulligan, C Regan, B Prior 0-1 each.

Leitrim  E Lyons, D Reynolds, J McKeon, B Prior, D Beck, G Reynolds, J Glancy (St Marys), T Beirne, D OConnor, P McGuinness, M Foley, C Regan, D ODonnell, J Glancy (Glencar Manor), D Gilhooly. Subs: W McKeon for Beck, E Mulligan for Glancy (Glencar Manor), D Sweeney for Gilhooly, S Foley for M Foley, Maguire for ODonnell.

The Leitrim Ladies had an impressive win over a strong Antrim side at the weekend which puts them sitting nicely on top of the league table.

Leitrim Ladies started off well but Antrim soon had the advantage and kept it up to half time where they led by 3 points. Antrim 2-07, Leitrim 10 points. Less than 5 minutes into the second half, Aine Tighe had put a point and 2 goals on the board and our 3rd goal came from Sharon Kerrigan who sustained an injury while taking her shot.  An unstopable Teresa Mylott shone through on the day where she came from the half back line to put 2 points of the board for Leitrim.

Next Outing for the Ladies is next Sunday 21st February away to Kilkenny!
