Leitrim hosted neighbours Sligo in the last game of the FBD Group stages in Pairc Sean on Sunday last 31/1/10.  The game was very competitive and entertaining throughout with Sligo deserving of their victory at the end.

There was very little between both sides in the first half and Leitrim went in at the break trailing by 2 points (0-8 to 0-6).  The home side got on level terms by the 46th minute but unfortunately this was to be their last score as they just faded towards the end of the game.  Sligo tagged on 3 late points and an added-time goal put more daylight between the sides at the final whistle.  Final score Leitrim 0-9, Sligo 1-12.

Well done to Adrian Croal from the Glencar Manorhamilton Club who made his Senior debut as a second half sub bringing to 5 the total number of Leitrim debutants in the FBD League. During the FBD League 15 Clubs from Leitrim were represented on our Teamsheet and one each from Dublin, Kildare and London.

LEITRIM ScórERS: J Glancy (0-3)(2f), E Mulligan (0-3)(2f), J Glancy, P Howard, D ODonnell 0-1 each.

LEITRIM

E Lyons, D Beck, J McKeon (capt), D Reynolds, C Regan, B Prior, J Glancy (St Marys), D Sweeney, C Richardson; P McGuiness, D OConnor, D ODonnell, B Gallagher, J Glancy (Glencar Manor), P Howard. Leitrim hosted Galway in the FBD League in a foggy Ballinamore on Sunday last, 24th January.

The home side made six changes in the starting 15 from their previous outing against GMIT in what could be considered an experimental side.

Although Galway dominated possession in the first half they were finding it increasingly difficult to find the target with some wayward shooting and credit in some part must go to the Leitrim defence who were holding firm under severe pressure.  In fact, Leitrim were only 2 points adrift during stoppage time when Nicky Joyce hit the Leitrim net to leave it 1-4 to 0-2 at the interval.

Leitrim started the second half brightly but gradually faded as the game progressed with Galway securing a comprehensive victory on a scoreline of 2-9 to 0-5.

Well done to 3 players who will have fond memories of Sundays game:-

  • Colm Maguire from the Aughavas club who made his Senior debut

  • Emlyn Mulligan who made his comeback as a second half substitute after a long layoff with injury

  • Wayne McKeon from the Ballinamore, Sean OHeslins Club who had the honour of leading out the Leitrim team on his home patch.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to compliment the Ballinamore, Sean OHeslins Club on their wonderful facilities for players, supporters, officals and the media.  Furthermore, their organisation of the event was also a credit to them and for that, many thanks to all concerned.

Leitrim Panel:

Gareth Phelan, P Maguire, J McKeon, D Beck, W McKeon, B Prior, J Glancy (St Marys), S Canning, D Sweeney, C Maguire, C Clarke, M Foley, R Kennedy, J Glancy (Glencar/Manorhamilton), D Gilhooley. Subs: E Lyons for G Phelan, D Reynolds for P Maguire,   E Mulligan for R Kennedy, D OConnor for D Gilhooley, P McGuinness for M Foley.

Subs unused: Colin Regan, Tomas Beirne, Clifford Richardson, Damien ODonnell, Philip Howard, Adrian Croal.

scorers for Leitrim: C Clarke , M Foley (1f), J Glancy (St. Marys), R Kennedy (1f), C Maguire  0-1 each.

The Dublin Supporters Club and Leitrim GAA took the opportunity to pay tribute to the outgoing officers at the GAA Awards night on Saturday night.

Eamonn Duignan spoke on behalf of the Dublin Supporters Club as follows:

"I would like to say a few short words on the retirement under the five year rule of the county board officers Gerry McGovern, Declan Bohan, Peter Flynn, Brendan Doyle & PJ Meehan. Over the last five years Leitrim have been very fortunate to have officers of their calibre working on behalf of the GAA in Leitrim.

In their term of office they undertook all their work on behalf of Leitrim GAA with total professionalism. The major financial project which they took on was of course the new stand in Pairc Sean. Over the last few years all around the world we have seen total incompetence on a large scale in many aspects of society. But here in Leitrim, Irelands smallest county with a population of 28,000 people, we raised €2.5 million towards the cost of the new stand from the various bodes including our supporters. The Board set down their objective, planned it, executed and the result of their work is there for everybody to see and enjoy. The beneficiaries of their their work is not only the GAA, but all the businesses in Leitrim who benefit on big match days when 10,000 to 15,000 people attend our matches in Pairc Sean. I would like to, on behalf of the Supporters in Dublin to say congratulations on a job well done and it was a real pleasure working with you over the last five years. Leitrim GAA and the County of Leitrim are forever in your debt.

The supporters club in Dublin will continue to assist Joe and his new officers in whatever they ask us to do. Joe has set out the Annaduff training centre as his priority. It is a very different climate at the moment but I know from my involvement that Leitrim Co Board is one of the highest regarded county boards by Croke Park officials in the manner in which they conduct their affairs. Annaduff training centre will be developed in phases, it may take longer than we all wish for, but with Joe and his new board it will be completed. I wish you all the best of luck in the year ahead."

On behalf of Leitrim GAA, Chairman Joe Flynn also paid glowing tributes to the outgoing officers and special presentations were made to Gerry McGovern, Declan Bohan, Peter Flynn and Brendan Doyle in recognition of their outstanding service to Leitrim GAA during their terms of office.

Eamonn Duignans citation on Marie Lee who was the recipient of the Jim Lynch Hall of Fame Award at the Leitrim GAA Awards night:-

"The Jim Lynch Hall of Fame Award is sponsored by the Leitrim Supporters in Dublin in honour of one of its founding members, & former county player of the 50/60s Jim Lynch.

This award means a lot to the supporters in Dublin, & to the recipients who are recognised for a lifetime of service & contribution to the GAA. The award also means a lot to the Lynch family. So I would like to especially welcome Jim/Martina who is with us tonight attending

The Award Winner

When Gerry McGovern informed me who this years winner of the Hall of Fame Award winner was, I did what I always do and put the winners name into the computer to complete a Google search.

I am quoting directly from the Google search as follows,

‘In the 1988 issue of the Leitrim Guardian are photos of Marie Lee ,an attractive ‘PERKY looking woman who was chosen as the Leitrim Personality of the year .Unsure of the meaning of the word Perky I had to find out more information on our Hall of Fame Award winner. Perky is defined as jaunty, lively, spirited, cheery and confident.

Marie Lee is a devoted wife to her husband Jackie, a caring mother to her eleven children Patricia, Antoinette, Ciaran, Jacinta, Fiona, Conor, Vincent, Adrian, David, Emmett & Naomi.

Not only was she a caring mother she was always very special to the pupils she taught in KilnÓgross, Aghacashel, Keshcarrigan & Drumcong. Apart from her home & her career Marie takes time to be special to many others through her involvement in numerous organisations in Kiltubrid and in particular to the youth of the area who hold her in the highest regard.

Her involvement in Athletics and football in encouraging the youth to participate in sports over a lifetime is evident in all the awards her pupils have won. The list of successes is long stretching back to 1975 & 1976 when Kesh School won the Leitrim Cross Country Championship. Drumcong school was the first Leitrim School to win the Connacht title in cross county in 1989.

In football Kiltubrid won u-12, u-14, u-16, minor titles in both boys & girls, and Kitubrid ladies won Junior A in 2002, Senior B in 2004 & 2005.Drumcong School played in the Connacht final both boys and girls in 1990.

When Kiltubrid won the Leitrim senior championship in 2005 almost all the team were past pupils of Marie Lee.

It was athletics one day football the next. We must mention Lees minibus, with Marie the pilot arriving at venues throughout the county when the school teams or Kiltubrid Juvenile teams are in action. It was of course not only a minibus. It was the first meals on wheels mobile in the greater Kiltubrid area, as Marie would often arrive with a bus load of children including her own eating as they drove and avoiding any delay inÓgetting to their destination. When the bus arrived it resembles a bee hive as the seemingly endless supply of children emerged from the bus. It was the only bus in Leitrim that never refused to start and the engine was warm 24/7.

For a long number of years Marie has been a most efficient secretary of the Leitrim GAA Supporters Club. She sells over 100 supporters club memberships in Kiltubrid every year and is always first back with her tickets sold.

Maries contribution to Leitrim has been recognized, when she won the Leitrim Personality of the Year award in 1986; in 1987 she was awarded the Sports Advisory Committee Award for Special Achievements, and in 1988 the Leitrim Guardian Person of the Year.

Twenty years later here we are inducting Marie in to the Jim Lynch Hall of Fame. In the very first edition of the Leitrim Guardian Michael Fox stated ‘Leaders are needed and everyone who can provide leadership must be prevailed upon to do so. Marie Lee is a leader. But she does not have to be prevailed upon to lead .She is a leader of her own volition. Ladies and gentlemen this years winner of the Jim Lynch Hall of Fame award is a very special person, Marie Lee Kiltubrid."
