Connacht Champ 2010 – Leitrim get bye to semifinals
County FootballLeitrim got a bye to the Connacht semi final in 2010 and will probably play their game in Hyde park in Roscommon as the winners of London v Roscommon are the opponents. While London will be a force to be reckoned with this year the Rossies will be determined to cut a path to the semis and take on Leitrim on their home patch. Leitrim have a score to settle so its going to be a lively championship season in 2010 even though RTEs pundit Kevin McStay has Leitrim written off already.
Galway will also travel this year and they head to New York for their opening game so this left Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo as the teams to fill the remaining positions. Out of the 3 teams Mayo are drawn against Sligo in the prelim game and the winners will take on the winners of Galway/NY. The big guns of Mayo, Sligo and Galway are all on the other side of the draw and this should make for a very entertaining year.
Prelims:
A. New York v Galway
B. London v Roscommon
C. Mayo v Sligo
D. Leitrim Bye.
Semis:
A v C – New York/Galway v Mayo/Sligo
B v D – London/Roscommon v Leitrim

Under 14 School of excellence
Last Sunday a panel from our under 14 school of excellence played Dublin club, Castleknock in Ballinamore. Castleknock are a relatively new club on the Dublin GAA seen and have many Leitrim connections including Aughawillan man Seamus McKiernan who organised the game. While the Leitrim lads ran out worthy winners and played some good football in the process, the game was very competitive right to the end. We would like to thank the Castleknock players and mentors for travelling to Leitrim and we plan to foster closer links with the club into the future.
The game planned for this Friday evening against Sligo has had to be called off due to under 14 fixtures in Sligo.

No details on when the next session will take place but it will be during the next week. Players are asked to please check the website for details.

Club Championship News
Club FootballIt was a victorious weekend for 2 championship teams as the Junior B and Junior C finals were held on Saturday in Ballinaglera and Ballinamore. Páirc Seán was inspected last week by members of each participating club in advance of the finals to determine if the field was playable after recent maintenance work on the surface. The four clubs agreed to move to alternative venues as ironically after all the rain this year the lack of rain over the last 2 weeks left sand lying on the surface in Carrick which is normally washed down into the verti-drains which form part of the annual maintenance plan.
Annaduff emerged victors against Allen Gaels with a comprehensive 2-3 win on a scoreline that finished Annaduff 3-14 Allen Gaels 1-11 played in Ballinamore.
In the Junior C final Leitrim Gaels pipped Glenfarne/Kilty by 1 point in a close game played in Ballinaglera. The Gaels will now have a team in Junior A and B for 2010.
The U21 championship got underway at the weekend in the B competition as Melvin Gaels booked their place in this weekends quarter final against Carrigallen when they brushed past Gortletteragh last Saturday evening in Ballinaglera – Melvin Gaels 2-09 Gortletteragh 1-07.
Bothy U21 competitions are at full tilt this bank holiday weekend as 14 teams participate in the quarter finals of each to book their place in the semis.

The ups and downs of club league football
Club FootballLast weekend promotion and relegation places were confirmed in leagues and the participants in the finals were confirmed. In Division 1 Glencar/Manor booked their place in the League final for the second year in a row after their result yesterday left then ahead of St. Marys on score difference. Manor will no doubt be eager to put back to back titles together this year after failing to do so last year when Melvin Gaels took the League honours. The Division 1 final is scheduled for 2 weeks time , Saturday 31st October at 4pm against Kiltubrid. Incidentally Glencar/Manor are also preparing for their Connacht Clubs Championship clash against Galways Corofin after the Galway county final replay yesterday ended in a victory for one of Connachts strongest Club teams who beat Mountbellew/Moylough by 3pts. The Connacht game is scheduled for Tuam Stadium on November 8th.
Leitrim teams Gortletteragh and Bornacoola have not managed to survive in Division 1 and will be relegated to Division 2 in 2010, Gortletteragh have known their fate for some time but Bornacoola failed yesterday in their bid to avoid relegation as they lost by 2 pts to St. Marys.
As already known Dromahair and Carrigallen (Division title holders) are promoted from Division 2 to Division 1 for 2010 but at the other end its St. Marys and Annaduff who will drop to Division 3.
Coming up from Division 3 its Ballinaglera and Glencar/Manor (Division title holders) and at the bottom end Drumkeerin and Annaduff go down to Division 4
In Division 4 its final time as Kiltubrid face Ballinamore / Sean O Heslins next Saturday at 4pm in Cloone for the battle of League title while at the other end Bornacoola and St. Marys prepare for Division 5 next year.
In Division 5 there are still some games outstanding but the two teams going up are Aughnasheelin and Carrigallen both of whom played in the final in July with Aughnasheelin taking the honours.

Amerian dream for Donal – World Champion
HandballTo win a world title in any sport is the dream of every athlete. That dream came true last Saturday, when Fenagh and Leitrim handballer, Donal Wrynn won the world U-15 one wall singles title in Portland Oregon USA.
The All-Ireland runner up in the U-15 final earlier this year went to America to the World Championships to gain experience in playing against the top world players. The schedule was very tough, with Donal playing 10 matches (21 games) in 3 days.
Donal competed at U-15 level in three competitions, winning the World Onewall title, reaching the final of the 40×20 doubles with Michael Lalor of Galway as his partner. In the 40×20 single competition he was narrowly defeated at the quarter final state by the eventual champion Padraig McKenna of Monaghan.
In the one wall competition, Donal got a bye in the first round before facing Julio Garcia of the USA, whom he dispatched 11 and 12 in a 15 point game. He faced the number one seed, Barry Nash of Clare in the semi-final with Donal edging out the Clare Supremo 5-4 in a tie breaker. The final saw Donal at his best, defeating Michael Lalor of Galway 15-2, 15-4. to take the world title.
He very nearly pulled off a second title as ironically, he teamed up with Lalor in the 40×20 doubles competition, defeating Costello and Egan of Roscommon in round one, Pumphrey and Walsh of Canada in the quarter finals and Colin Crehan(Clare) and Darren Doherty (Monaghan) before going under to Malone and Nash of Clare in the final.
Donal will fly in tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday) into Dublin Airport and it is expected that he will arrive in Rooskey at 7:30pm followed by a stop in Mohill at 7:45pm and finally to arrive to a huge celebration in Fenagh at 8pm.
Many congratulations to Donal on bringing a World title to Leitrim and Fenagh!
