Big Occasion for Ballinamore Sean OHeslins
Club FootballSean OHeslins, one of the legendary clubs of Leitrim GAA, has seen many big occasions but this coming weekend will be one of their greatest ever. The culmination of seven years of work comes on Sunday next when Uachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Criostóir Ó Cuana, officially opens the new Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin.
Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin was the first GAA-owned grounds in Leitrim when it first opened in 1952. For years it was the main County grounds and hosted County Finals, Connacht Championships and many big games. Indeed National League games were played there until the early 1990s. However, it was prone to flooding and many a game had to be changed elsewhere even in summertime.
In 2002 the club embarked on a major development the like of which had not been seen in Leitrim before. The main pitch was intensively drained and is now the best in the County. The club then developed a second pitch, something which is common in many counties but not in Leitrim. The second pitch is also a Prunty pitch and is as good as the main one. The final phase was the development of a stand and dressingrooms and other facilities. The stand can seat nearly 800 people. There are four dressingrooms underneath as well as referees rooms etc. Upstairs there is a gym and clubrooms.
On next weekend there are a series of activities, details of which can be seen in the Leitrim Observer. The official opening is on Sunday at 3.00pm. Local clubs Aughawillan, Aughnasheelin, Drumreilly and Fenagh as well as Sean OHeslins will partake in a tournament for the Thomas Galligan Memorial Cup.
The club has also produced a DVD history which will be launched in Priors Lounge on Saturday night by Uachtarán, Críostóir Ó Cuana, at 9.30. This will be a wonderful look at the history of a famous club in all its aspects. It will be on sale after the launch as well as in the pitch on Sunday and in local shops.
All of the Gaels of Leitrim are invited to the opening on Sunday. Admission is free. Agus tá fáilte roimh gach duine.

Clubs take centre stage on day of 125 Celebrations
GeneralClubs take centre stage on day of 125 Celebrations
As many as 400,000 GAA members across Ireland and overseas attended club events over the weekend to celebrate Lá na gClub as part of the GAAs 125 Celebrations.
The Association is asking clubs to send their video clips and photographs to Croke Park by email for inclusion in a collection of memories of the day.
On a weekend free of competitive inter-county games, clubs across the organisation were encouraged to organise events that underlined their links with their host communities by placing a special emphasis on family, fun, games and culture.
Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Criostóir Ó Cuana praised clubs who actively supported and promoted the day across the country and expressed satisfaction that the event helped underline the special place of the club at the heart of the organisation.
He said: "Today was a special day for clubs across the country and I was privileged to be present at a number of club events over the course of the weekend to witness first hand the excellent work that our clubs are doing.
"These events offered club members involved in the various different activities of club life the chance to come together on the same occasion and celebrate their involvement and membership of the same unit.
"Our clubs lie at the heart of our Association and I believe the success of todays festivities underlined the importance of the work they do."
Clubs are asked to send their video clips and digital photographs to 125@gaa.ie to allow the association to compile a collection of the events that took place today.

Dromahair pipped at the post
Club FootballAlas their dream is over as Dromahair lost the final by 1 point after a game that saw them lead for most of the way through. Playing with a strong wind they led at half time 0-5 to 1-1 in a game that was littered with frees. The physically bigger Glasdrumman team managed a point then a goal after a sustained period of pressure. Dromahair played open ball into the forwards but had to work very hard for each score and the 1 point lead proved to be insufficient considering the loss of the wind advantage in the second half.
The red and whites put in a huge performance in the second half which was not without its dramas. Without spoiling the viewing of the programme it was nail biting stuff right until the final whistle deep in injury time. Unfortunately for the gallant Dromahair lads they ended 1 behind at the key stage of the game and tried ever so hard to level matters. The dream was not to be, much to the dismay of the team, mentors and the huge support.
Congratulations is due to the Team and Management for their achievement in reaching the final and putting Dromahair firmly on the map. The supporters who turned out in their thousands were a credit and they provided the necessary support with their magnificant colour and fanfare.
The final will be shown Sunday evening at 6:30pm on RTE 1.

La Na gClub – Sunday May 10th
GeneralThe GAAs 125 Celebrations will take on a special club focus this weekend when clubs the length and breadth of the country and those overseas celebrate Lá na gClub.
Association President Criostóir Ó Cuana has called on members everywhere to engage with their local clubs next Sunday.
Clubs have been encouraged to celebrate the GAAs century and a quarter anniversary by organising events within their communities which underline their importance to their respective areas.
A variety of different initiatives have been organised by units with a special emphasis onÓgames, culture and community on a day when no club fixtures have been scheduled.
The GAA President, who is a Youghal clubman, joined forces with Ard Stiúrthoir Páraic Duffy and Iar-Uachtarán Nioclás Ó Braonáin to shine a light on their own club allegiances and he urged members everywhere to make a special effort to ensure that Sunday is a memorable day that places our clubs – some of whom are also celebrating their 125th anniversaries – at the heart of the Associations 125 calendar.
He said: "Our home club is where it begins for us all and for that reason it occupies a special place in us all. Its where we are first introduced to the games and it very quickly assumes a badge of identity that in many cases comes second only to our family allegiances.
"Sunday is all about highlighting the incredible work that our clubs do in every community in Ireland and re-affirming the place of the club at the very heart of the organisation.
"Some of our older club units are also celebrating their 125th anniversaries, which is testament to the massive and long standing contributions that they make to the fabric of the communities they interact with and serve so well.
"I acknowledge the superb work overseen by our volunteers in clubs everywhere and hope that the GAA will be as well served by its members in the years ahead as it has been since its inception back in 1884."
