South Down 3-11 Leitrim 2-12

Favourites South Down were pushed all the way by a resurgent Leitrim in an open and exciting encounter at windswept Pairc Sean Mhic Diarmada, Carrick-on-Shannon yesterday.

The home side got off to a terrific start leading 1-6 to 0-2 after 25 minutes, but when the Leitrim keeper Fintan McKiernan dropped the ball into his own net following a 65 by John Brown, it left the half-time score just 1-7 to 1-6 in Leitrims favour.

A second Leitrim goal in the 42nd minute by Colm Hayes extended their lead, but two South DownÓgoals by Jonathon McCusker and John OKane between the 44th and 48th minute put the visitors ahead for the first time and despite a late rally resulting in three Leitrim points without reply in the closing minutes, the visitors held out.

Leitrim dominated the first half action aided by a strong breeze in this dour affair. An early rattle of the Mayo net was not to be as the referee called a square ball and a quiet Mayo salvaged enough points to keep up with Leitrim.   A goal from Emlyn Mulligan saw Leitrim go in at the interval with a two point advantage – Leitrim 1-04 Mayo 0-5 .

With the wind at their backs and what must have been an inspirational half time talk Mayo re-emerged as a team with a very different mental approach. Leitrim could all but score 1 point as Mayo took points from all angles.

Jason Dohertys 39th-minute goal was the crucial score for champions Mayo in this Cadburys Connacht U21 FC semi-final at McHale Park, Castlebar, yesterday.

Mayo closed the game out with unanswered points in the final quarter from Mikie Sweeney, Doherty (2), Thady Gavin (2), Aidan Campbell (3), and Donal Vaughan.

Final score: Mayo 1-16 Leitrim 1-05

scorers:

Mayo: J Doherty 1-2, T Gavin (2f), A Campbell 0-4 (2f) each, C Barrett 0-2, D Vaughan, B Gallagher, J Burke, M Sweeney 0-1 each.

All Leitrim eyes will be focused west to Castlebar tomorrow (Saturday) as the U21 team take on Mayo in the lions den. The venue is McHale Park and its not a particularly successful one for Leitrim U21s but no doubt this team will be eager to break the bogey.

The recent Hastings Cup Shield title and with 3 of the team making the cut in the Senior setup then their confidence will be suitably boosted. Emlyn Mulligan, Gary Reynolds and David OConnor have all performed well in recent weeks on the Senior scene and their experience will no doubt count tomorrow.

The management team of Liam Higgins and selectors Pat McWeeney, John Russell and Michael Maguire have put in a huge effort along with the panel of players leaving no stone unturned.

The team to take the field is as follows:

ColinÓgilligan – Glencar/Manorhamilton
Mark Mitchell – Gortletteragh
Dermot Reynolds – Annaduff
Jason Conroy – Bornacoola
Kieran O Flynn – Glencar/Manorhamilton
Gary Reynolds – Carrigallen
James Campbell – Gortletteragh
Stephen Conaty – Mohill
James McGrail – St Marys
David O Connor – Bornacoola
Conor Sheridan – Melvin Gaels
Ray Mulvey – St Marys
Ronan Kennedy – Mohill
Emlyn Mulligan – Melvin Gaels
Stephen O Hara – Glencar/Manorhamilton

Best of Luck to all concerned.

Leitrim picked up their first points of the league and hopes of avoiding relegation when they comprehensively defeated Connacht champions Sligo in Carrick-on-Shannon yesterday.

In a lively first half Leitrim, minus four first-choice players through injury, were three points up without reply after 15 minutes but a brace of points from Philip Gallagher and Eamon Cawley kept the visitors in touch. However, further points from Leitrims top scorer on the day Emlyn Mulligan gave them a deserved half-time lead of 0-5 to 0-3.

Leitrim continued to dominate on the resumption and in the 49th minute, Fintan McBriens effort over the head of Phillip Greene in the Sligo goal dashed any hopes of a Sligo comeback. Their woes were compounded 10 minutes from time when Eamonn OHara was red carded.

ScórERS: Leitrim: E Mulligan 0-8 (6f), F McBrien 1-1, D Brennan,D Duignan,D Reynolds 0-1 each. Sligo: E Cawley 0-3, K Byrne,B Kivlehan,P Gallagher (1f) 0-1 each.
