Allianz NFL – Rd 7 – Limerick v Leitrim

Diarmuid Carrolls 63rd-minute point proved the decisive score as Limerick retained their Division 3 status at the expense of Leitrim in an exciting tie in Kilmallock.

Visitors Leitrim were the better side in the opening half and led by 0-7 to 0-4 at the break.

Five of Leitrims first-half points came from top scorer Emlyn Mulligan.

However, Limerick upped their performance significantly at the start of the second half. Three unanswered points from Ian Ryan, Andrew Lane and JohnÓgalvin, and an excellent Stephen Kelly goal in the 42nd minute, saw Limerick into a 1-7 to 0-7 lead.

Plucky Leitrim rallied again and four points in quick succession from Mulligan, three, and Ciaran Duignan, helped the visitors into a one-point lead by the 55th minute.

However, a resilient Limerick side was not to be denied in a tense final quarter. Inspired by outstanding full-back Johnny McCarthy and points from Ian Ryan, from a well taken free, and an excellent individual score from Carroll, the home side claimed a precious win and consigned their opponents to relegation.

The Green & Gold – Home and Away

Its all go this weekend for the Senior and Minor footballers as the Seniors aim to finish out the League on a winning note and avoid Division 4 while the Minors are opening their championship season tomorrow evening against neighbours Roscommon.

The Minors will hope to hit the ground running at 7pm tomorrow evening in the first of 2 round robinÓgames in the qualifying stage of the championship. Their recent good form against Mayo in the Connacht league will boost their confidence however earlier in the league Sligo beat Leitrim and Roscommon beat Sligo. Roscommon will be no push over and a determined level headed work ethic will be required to bag the 2 points. The next game for the minors will be on Bank Holiday Monday May 5th against Sligo, Sligo and Roscommon will have played their game on April 26th. Club games have been arranged for 5pm in order to facilitate the Minor throw-in time of 7pm so as many supporters are asked to make it to Páirc Seán tomorrow evening.

The Senior squad head south to Limericks second pitch in Kilmallock, a pre-arranged venue despite talk that the hurling finals were to blame for the move from Gaelic Grounds. This is a winner survives relegationÓgame for both teams as a loss will almost certainly mean a drop to Division 4 with either Sligo or Longford. The good news for Leitrim is that we are in control of our own destiny and the Sligo/Longford game does not affect our future. The bad news is that traditionally Leitrim do not travel well. This is the first obstacle that Leitrim will have to overcome and the second will be a physically strong Limerick team who like to play direct down the middle. A draw should suffice for Leitrim but realistically the players minds will need to be set on the full 2 points.

Word on the street is that this game will draw the largest traveling support yet for our away games and it will be very much appreciated by the team and management.

The last game of the Allianz League is in Kilmallock on Sunday. The park is located close to the centre of Kilmallock and is easily accessible. When in the centre of the town take a right at a cross roads and the pitch is on the left hand side (see picture of pitch location below).
