Once again the faithful followers of the green and gold have 3 intercounty games to choose from with the Senior Footballer, Hurlers and U21s in action over the next two days with two of the fixtures against neighbours Roscommon. As was the case last weekend the footballers and hurler supporters must part their ways as both the Hurling and U21 games are set for a 2pm throw-in tomorrow.
The Leitrim U21 team play round 2 of the Hastings Cup with a home game to Roscommon. The first round resulted in a loss as a stronger Longford team took the upper hand in the final quarter. The game is scheduled to be played in Leitrim Gaels grounds and the throw in time is 2pm.
At the same time in Woodmount (near Ballinasloe, – Updated Sat AM) the Leitrim Hurlers are also in action against Roscommon in the Connacht Hurling League. This is the the Shield semifinal and the winners will progress to play the winner of Sligo IT v NUIG. All finals, Cup and Shield, are scheduled for Saturday week 26th Jan.
The County Footballers play Sligo in the final round of the FBD League. Last weeks controversial and frustrating game must be put behind as we face a Sligo team that we will also meet in the Allianz National League in round 4 on March 16th. This is a a very important game as we refocus and prepare bodies and minds for the new Division 3 league. Incidentally there is an outside chance of this game being important in determining the table toppers in our section of the FBD league but the odds are with Galway beating GMIT and progressing to the home final.
Leitrim v Sligo is on Sunday in Páirc Seán at 2pm.
A full weekends entertainment in store for our loyal supporters which our players would love to see in numbers at our games.

Leitrim GAA will not be pursuing the issue any further that the FBD League game v Galway should be replayed. This situation had arisen for consideration as a result of the unfortunate sending off in error of one our players early in the second half. Following consideration of the facts in the case, the rule book and the manner in which similar situations were dealt with previously and having sought an interpretation of rule from higher GAA authorities, Leitrim GAA will not be taking this issue any further.

Connacht Council have confirmed to Leitrim GAA that last Sundays referee in Leitrims Connacht FBD game against Galway has admitted making a mistake in the sending off of Michael Duignan in his referees report. In addition the referee Declan Corcoran, has also apologised to Michael Duignan, the Leitrim players and management for the error which resulted in Leitrim being reduced to 14 players from the 12th minute of the second half.
The error occurred when Michael received a yellow card followed by a red card as the referee mistook him for another Leitrim player who was booked earlier. Michael had not in fact received an earlier yellow card.
Leitrim County Board made their concerns known to Connacht Council about the error through appropriate channels immediately after the game and this latest news is welcomed as the red card is now rescinded and Michaels record is cleared. Should the red card (double yellow) have been recorded then Michael would have faced the risk of an automatic 2 week suspension in the event of receiving another red (2 yellows) in a game in the proceeding 48 weeks.

Connacht FBD League
Leitrim 1-09 Galway 0-13
Leitrims second outing of the year was a frustrating affair. While it was not a particluarly physical encounter it was a game that saw 11 yellow and 3 red cards issued. Galway dominated the first half and Leitrim gave a very spirited effort in the second.
The first half saw a very strong Galway midfield dominate as they played at a lively pace into the scoreboard end of the field. Leitrim opened the Scóring with a James Glancy point which was followed by a Michael Meehan point and then a point by David Ward. Leitrims Emlyn Mulligan replied with a point but Galway hit their purple patch as they registered 5 points unanswered. Emlyn Mulligan scored another point followed by Declan Maxwell late in the half. Ward and Meehan both scored one point each and the final score of the half came from Leitrims Emlyn Mulligan from a free. Despite their dominance in the middle sector Galways tally was only 4 points ahead of Leitrim. Half time score Leitrim 0-5 Galway 0-9
The second half was a red affair as 3 players were sent marching in various different incidents. The first, early in the half was a controversal decision as Leitrims Michael Duignan received a yellow and then was shown a red. It appears that no previous yellow card had been issued to Duignan. Towards the end of the game the Galway team ended with 13 players as as their captain Kieran Fitzgerald and and half back Darren Mullahy were shown the line in seperate incidents late in the second half.
Despite the early sending off of Duignan this was Leitrims better half. Points were traded early as it was Meehan, Mulligan twice and Meehan again all from frees. James Glancy scored from play and Emlyn Mulligan registered his 6th point from frees. Galway took the next two points, one each from Meehan and Fiacra Breathnach. This brought Galways score difference back to 4 points. A fumble in the Galway small rectangle and a subsequent foul on Declan Maxwell resulted in a penalty which Mulligan cooly slotted home. A one point game that Leitrim have seen all too often. A gallant final push from Leitrim was not enough to breach the Galway defense for a final score and the game ended in a Galway win by the smallest of margins. – Leitrim 1-09 Galway 0-13

FBD League Round 3 – Leitrim v Sligo
County FootballFBD League – Round 3
Leitrim 0-12 Sligo 0-7
It was the last round robinÓgame of the FBD league for 2008 and Leitrim put in a good work man like performance in the second half to take the spoils against a lack lustre Sligo squad. Three players from last weeks game were not available today due to injury. Barry Prior was replaced by Drumkeerin’s Stephen Feeney and Leitrim had a completely new half forward line as Darren Duignan, Ciaran Duignan and Philip McGuinness replaced Colin Regan and Michael Foley while Emlyn Mulligan moved into the full forward line with James Glancy and Donal Brennan. It remained dry throughout the game but the going was heavy as Sligo played into the scoreboard end in the first half.
The first half was very low Scóring with a total of seven points registered and it was Leitrim who headed for the dressing rooms with a 1 point advantage. The half started with 3 wides for Leitrim from James Glancy, Donal Brennan and Emlyn Mulligan. Followed by a wide from Sligo from Mark Breheny. Daniel Daveys attempt was successful as he opened the Sligo account with a point from play. Another Sligo point followed from Eamon Cawley and Sligo were in control of the middle of the field as they applied a lot of pressure on the half backs and midfield. Another wide for Sligo and it was in the 14th minute Leitrim got a break and Darren Duignan who appeared on the right wing to kick over a point from distance. Darren’s next attempt was a wide but Ciaran Duignan made his mark with a point from play. Leitrim were back winning possession in defence as they held tight with notable performances from John McKeon, Stephen Feeney and Dermot Reynolds but once the ball went passed midfield a lot of attacks went astray due to poor passing. Leitrim were lucky on two occasions when Sligo hit the upright and the ball fell nicely to a green and gold jersey each time.
Gerry McGowan brought Sligo’s score to 3 points while both teams traded wides at the either end. James Glancy put Leitrim in front and this was followed up by Emlyn Mulligan. Half Time Leitrim 0-4 Sligo 0-3
Leitrim took over in the second half despite a bright start from Sligo with 3 attempts resulting in a point and two wides. Donal Brennan was replaced by David O’Connor and Michael Foley who was also brought on at half time for McGuinness pointed for Leitrim. This was followed quickly by a point from play from Ciaran Duignan flowing a nice move through centre field. Brehany and Cawley came back with two points from play and then Leitrim responded with six unanswered points. Four from Mulligan and two inspirational points from Shane Foley and Michael Duignan both long range and from sweeping moves from defense.
The final score came from Sligo’s Eamon Cawley but the game was in the bag for Leitrim at this stage. The introduction of all 5 substitutes in the second half definitely added a breath of fresh air and life to a hard working team with satisfactory performances in many areas of the field.
While both teams are in need of more training this game at least will give Sligo something to think about on their return in the National League on March 16th.
