Are you on the team yet ?

The fundraising scheme Get on the team devised by Leitrim County Board as the main source of fundraising for the development of the new stand at Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada, has been hailed a huge success as the contributions received to date has now well passed the half million mark.

The scheme which was launched late in 2006, is now gathering momentum as the stand reaches its completion date and presently donations are now coming in on a daily basis.

Speaking on behalf of the County Board Chairman Gerry McGovern has expressed the gratitude of the board to all who have made their donations to date and to all who have committed to making donations in the near future. He says “its an indication of the commitment of Leitrim people everywhere to support the development of Gaelic games in the county and the pride that Leitrim have in their County as Leitrim GAA provide one of the newest and most modern facilities in the country”

The Stand which is scheduled to be completed at the end of the month will boast the most modern facilities for players and supporters alike and something that every Leitrim person will be duly proud. Press facilities at the stand will be also of the highest standard.

Providing a facility of this nature is a huge achievement for a county like Leitrim as the County Board aim to provide state of the art facility for its players and supporters.

It is the aim of the County Board to have the stand paid for by its completion date, which is achievable with the assistance of all Leitrim supporters, and as the completion date looms the County Board are once again making a special appeal to people who wish to contribute to the cost whether it be through the scheme Get on the team or people who just want to make a donation of any nature, if they could to do so as soon as possible, as there is now a huge demand on funding to bring this new brilliant facility to a conclusion.

Vhi Cul Camps Application Forms.
Application forms have been delivered to all Schools this week and we would ask all parents to please fill in your form and return same promptly as we have to order the kits and we don’t want to disappoint any child. Their will be two camps in Carrick on Shannon this year to help parents who are away on holidays while their camp is on. The National launch of the Vhi Cul camps will take place this Thursday in Croke Park, with the Provincial launch taking place in Ballyhaunis on Monday 14/05.

Transition year course
This course piloted last year in Mayo, and introduced to all Connacht counties this year has proved a great success with the three Leitrim schools, St. Clare’s PPS Manorhamilton, Drumkeerin Vocational school and the Marian College Mohill, who run a transition year programme. Well done to all who took part and to the Transition year coordinators in each school for all your help.

Important Notice from CCC regarding Master Fixture Plan

A Master Fixture Plan for the remainder of the 2007 was sent to Club secretaries this morning. Note that it is only a guide as to where fixtures may be placed, depending on circumstances, the principal being the progress of the Leitrim Senior Football team in the Championship, and as such may require future adjustment. You should also note that Rounds of League/Championship have been slotted into various weekends, as appropriate.

Future meetings of CCC Liatroma will decide the more specific aspects of various rounds/fixtures. As such, the plan is just a guide as to the weekend on which the games may be played, but the specific Saturday/Sunday breakdown of games has yet to be decided.

May Fixtures
The remaining fixtures for May will be uploaded in the next 24 hours.

Leitrim GAA are pleased to announce that the Get On the Team fund raising initiative has reached the half million euro mark over the weekend. There has been a considerable number of individuals sending in their donations in recent days at a time when funding is most needed. We are now one third of the way towards our target of €1.5 million.

This projects aim is to replace the old dressing rooms and media area with a fantastic new structure that not only replaces the old but gives us an extra 3,000 seats for spectators.

The new stand is progressing well as we get closer to its completion date in 5 weeks time. The ground floor which includes 4 large dressing rooms are at an advanced stage (painting and tiling) and the middle suite of offices are well progressed. A lot of work is currently happening at the Media area as there is a body of work involved in enclosing this area. The spectator area is now ready for seating and the task of installing the 3,000 seats will begin this week.

This stand will have state of the art facilities for players, spectators and the Media. It will have the most modern communication facilities of any GAA stadium in Ireland.

If you are not on the Team Fundraiser and wish to do so then please contact an officer of the County Board as soon as possible as every euro invested at this stage will reduce the cost of any borrowings that Leitrim GAA may have to endure. Click on the Developments Link on the left hand side to obtain more specific info. and instructions. Donations that are not Tax Relief compatible are also most welcome.

This is a project where everyone wins – please support it.

As Leitrim supporters and competitors headed for Killarney on Saturday last their hopes of winning All Ireland Scór titles were never higher. With no less than five clubs from Leitrim taking part, something that no other county had on the day, it was reasonable to expect at least one or two titles would come our way. However, when you get to an All Ireland Final, you are meeting the cream of Leinster, Munster and Ulster and sometimes the winners from those provinces have travelled a harder route than Leitrim folk have done.

When the night’s performances on stage had come to a close, there was a general agreement among Leitrim supporters that we would be lucky to win in any of the five and so it turned out to be. However, there are times when one is cautiously optimistic and sometimes it turns out right.

Rince Foirne, Amhranaíocht

In Rince Foirne, Glencar/Manorhamilton were competing against the winners from the previous two years: St Edna’s, Tyrone and Spa from Kerry. The Kerry champions won again. In Amhránaíocht Aonair Sinéad Egan from Aughnasheelin was probably closest to winning. It was the general consensus that it was between Sinéad and the girl from Dublin’s Erin’s Hopes but it went to the Capital.

Dublin clubs are seldom seen at this level in Scór but Erin’s Hopes have come big into it in the past couple of years and they became only the seventh club ever to win two Senior Scór titles on the same night when the added the Ceol Uirlise to the Amhránaíocht Aonair. Dromahair performed well but this was a competition with an exceptionally high standard.

Question Time and Novelty Act

In Tráth na gCeist Bornacoola were faced with three clubs who had all won All Ireland’s before in this event. Rathmore from Kerry were the winners again. Of the five events in which Leitrim were represented the highest hopes rested with Fenagh St Caillin’s in Nuachleas. They were an experienced group and their act brought the house down on all occasions before Killarney. For some reason it never took off on Saturday and indeed neither did any of the other acts to the extent one would have expected. Overall the Novelty acts this year did not produce any great entertainment in an otherwise good programme. The winners were the very talented group from Lisnaskea, Co Fermanagh.

A Wonderful Occasion

Failure to win All Irelands did not take away form what was a wonderful occasion and the Kerry venue leads itself to a great night’s enjoyment, which extends far beyond the stage performance. The music and song extended into the small hours of the morning as all the competitors, win or lose, mingled and entertained their supporters with ceol agus craic in a manner that would not happen at any other more central venue. As the crowds from the four corners of Ireland assembled on Sunday morning before going home any disappointments were quickly forgotten as the wonderful occasion of Scór All Ireland was talked about and the thoughts of next year were already being hatched.

It was with regret and sadness we record the passing of Syl McGovern (Aughawillan) Fr. Kevin Sulllivan (PP Annaduff) and the recent passing of Pat Cull (Aughnasheelin) all of whom were great supporters of Club and County activities in Leitrim GAA. We wish to extend our sympathies to their respective families.

May they rest in peace.

It was heartbreak for the girls of Ballinamore Post Primary in the Pat The Baker Post Primary Schools Senior C Final 2007 as they lost by 1 goal.

The game was played yesterday (Tuesday) in Cavan and the final result in a relatively low Scóring encounter was:

Ballinamore Post Primary 1-04
St Catherines (Armagh) 2-04

U16C FINAL Ballinamore, Leitrim 1-4 St. Catherines, Armagh 2-4

Roared on by eleven bus loads of supporters St. Catherines Armagh claimed the All Ireland U16C title at the expense of Ballinamore Post Primary Scholl yesterday. As early as the second minute St. Catherines had a great goal chance however Leitrim keeper Niamh Mc Govern made a great save from Finnoula Rodgers. The Armagh side made no mistake two minutes later when full forward Aoife Lennon found herself one on one with the keeper and buried to the net. The excellent Lennon then followed with two points, one from a free to put her side five ahead entering the second quarter. Ballinamore opened their account in the 18th minute when midfielder Clare Plunkett fired a thirty five metre free goal ward. St. Catherines keeper Terri Powell did manÓge to get a hand on it put unfortunately for her she pushed it upwards and into the net. Ballinamore continued to press and were rewarded with another point from Ciara Mc Loughlin in the 28th minute which left the midway score 1-2 to 1-1 in favour of St. Catherines. Both sides missed good goal chances early in the second half before Emma Mullen pointed for St. Catherines. Ballinamore refused to lie down and points from Sheila Walshe and Claire Plunkett brought them level entering the final quarter. A point from a free by Claire Plunkett in the 47th minute put Ballinamore ahead for the first time. Aoife Lennon was then denied by the woodwork before Tanya Mc Coy fired over to level matters once again. The winning score, a goal then arrived with just three minutes remaining.

Player of the Match was Clare Plunkett, Ballinamore

Photos (24 pages) of the game are available on our photo gallery.
