Carrigallen walked tall on Saturday when they convincingly defeated Galway kingpins, Menlough by double scores (3 ? 5 to 1 ? 4) in the Connacht intermediate football semi-final in Ballinamore.

Meanwhile Mayo champions, Tourmakeady, who defeated Roscommon?s Kilmore by three points (1 ? 8 to 1 ? 5) in the other semi-final, will be Carrigallen?s opponents in this weekend?s Connacht final.
Menlough grabbed an early lead in Saturday?s game when Brendan Costello put over a third minute free.

But CarrigallenÓgot on level terms some seven minutes later after Charles McGuinness found the target with a similar effort.
Following that Carrigallen took a grip on the proceedings when Andrew McManus and Noel Doonan combined well in the fourteenth minute for Doonan to shoot the game?s first goal.

A second CarrigallenÓgoal four minutes later from Terence Reynolds, after he fielded a ball that ricochet off the post, following a Charles McGuinness free, dealt a hammer blow to Menlough?s challenge.
The Galway men responded with points from frees, which were hit over by Robert Hughes and Brendan Costello over the next eight minutes.
Charles McGuinness converted a free before the interval that gave Carrigallen a five points halftime cushion (2 ? 2 to 0 ? 3).
Menlough made a determined effort to turn the game around in the third quarter but the Carrigallen defence plugged every gap with the result that the Galway side only managed to cut the deficit by a solitary point.
Robert Hughes registered this score when he tapped over a forty-third minute free.

Carrigallen went back resolutely on the offensive in the final quarter after Charles McGuinness hammered home his side?s third goal, following a piecing of indecisive fielding by two Menlough defenders close to their goalmouth.
Over the next ten minutes the Leitrim side ensured victory when Terence Reynolds, sub Derek Mulligan and Charles McGuinness added Carrigallen points from play.

It was proving to be an unpleasant trip to Leitrim for the Galway champions and there were further problems for the Menlough men before the end when Brendan Costello was dismissed for committing a second yellow card offence.
But Menlough did manÓge a consolationÓgoal when Robert Hughes drove to the Carrigallen net, deep in injury time, in a crowded goalmouth situation.

Note regarding walkovers in the 2006 League

The following is a response from the GAC with regard to the issue of Walkovers in the 2006 League.

“The issue in question here has been addressed in the only manner that is feasible by the Regulations that have been approved in March towards the completion of the Leagues for 2006. I agree that if your team receives a WO then it has been in effect disadvantaged. However the most relevant section of the Regulations is at the very end, as posted on the front page of the website, ie a team cannot be relegated or denied the opportunity to play in a league or shield final on the basis of score difference alone. it will only serve to advance the stages of these playoffs and each team is guaranteed at least one play off game, no matter what the issue at hand may be. I presume that is the best that can be done and in effect this is what will happen, as it has been agreed and approved on March 13th 2006 at the March meeting of Coiste Chontae Liatroma. ”

?Playoff Regulations Leagues 2006?

We have had recent enquiries regarding the closing stages of the leagues and in order to answer these queries we are publishing the following which is an extract from an official GAC Liatroma document which outlines the ?Playoff Regulations Leagues 2006?:

?Second Tier Games ???

In the event of an equality of points at the top of the table after the conclusion of the league games the following should apply:

1. Two teams tied for first place will play league final.

2. Three teams tied for first place the team with the highest score difference will automatically qualify for the final and meet the winners of a game played between the remaining two teams.

3. Four teams tied for first place then the team with the highest score difference should automatically qualify for the final. It will meet the winner of a playoff game between the second placed team on score difference and the winner of a further playoff game between the teams with the third and fourth best score difference.

Relegation

1. Two teams tied on equal points should play off to decide relegation in the event of one relegation place to be decided.

2. Three teams tied on equal points to decide one relegation place, then the team with the lowest score difference should be placed in the final relegation playoff where it will meet the defeated team in a relegation semi-final played between the teams with the best and second best score difference.

3. Three teams tied on equal points to decide two relegation places then the team with the lowest score difference should playoff with team with the second lowest score difference to decide the first relegation place. The winning team of this playoff should play the team with best score difference to decide the remaining relegation place.

4. Four teams tied on equal points to decide one remaining relegation place then the team with highest score difference should meet the team with the third best score difference in a relegation semi-final. The teams with the second and fourth best score difference should meet in a second relegation semi-final. The defeated teams in each of these games should playoff to decide the final relegation.

5. Four teams tied on equal points to decide two relegation places then the team with the least score difference should play the team with next best score difference to decide the first relegation place. To decide the second relegation place the teams with the best and second best score difference should playoff with the defeated team playing the winning team from the first relegationÓgame to decide the final relegation place.

In all of the above, in the event of any teams having equal score difference, then highest score for should be the next determining factor of differentiation. This to be followed, in the event of further equality by the result of the game(s) played in the series of games directly between the two or more teams concerned.

Should there be games conceded during the course of the league competition proper, points should be awarded in the league table as normal procedure dictates. There should be no recourse to claim of loss of score difference by the awarding of these league points by the clubs concerned, as no team can be prevented from progressing without recourse to a playoff to some degree or similarly relegated.

Extra time should be played in all playoff games including final relegation but not including League or Shield finals.?

Coaching News

GAA National Coaching Conference
The 4th annual GAA coaching conference will this year be hosted in Croke park from Friday, November 24th to Sunday November 26th. This year a new dimension has been added and for the first time the conference will address key medical issues specific to player welfare.

The conference will be officially opened on Friday evening with two discussion topics. On Saturday the conference programme will combine a cross sectional theme targeting coaches, administrators and referees as part of the GAA games development CARE foundation. This year the conference will also include a full GAA suppliers exhibition village. Cost this year will be 75 Euro per delegate. All clubs should check out the programme as there is something of interest for everyone including topics on pitch maintenance.

Hurling in Leitrim ? The way forward
A very successful meeting was held on Thursday last with lots of discussion and debate on the development of Hurling. County Board Chairman Gerry McGovern and Secretary Declan Bohan attended the meeting and their contribution proved in-valuable. New arrangements and dates for competitions and also under 12 club blitz days along with primary school blitz days will be put in place for 2007. All underage hurling fixtures will now appear in the Coiste na nÓg fixtures calendar. To increase the number of Primary schools receiving coaching we will be recruiting at least one new hurling coach over the next few weeks. We will also asking clubs to assist us by introducing Hurling to their under 8 and 10 year olds. Not all children want to play football only and we should offer them every opportunity to play one of the best games in the world. Lets all move forward.

Foundation Level Hurling Course
To help get club personnel or teachers confident in coaching the skills of hurling, we have in conjunction with Sligo GAA, organised a Foundation Level Coaching course, which will take place in Tubbercurry GAA grounds on Saturday December 02nd , commencing at 10.00 am. We would appeal to anyone with an interest in hurling, male and female to attend this course. If you have already completed the foundation for Football you only need to do the practical part of this course. Under 17 Development Squad
Our under 17 development squad will continue training on Saturday next 27/11 in the Sports complex, Ck ? on ? Shannon commencing at 10.45. Leitrim U21 A Final

Glencar/Manor 1 ? 6

Oughteragh Gaels comfortably retained their Leitrim U21 A title when defeating Glencar/Manor by eleven points in Drumshanbo on Saturday.

The Leitrim U21 ?A? final was a game of two halves with Glencar/Manor staying in contention with Oughteragh Gaels in the first thirty minutes but then disappearing off the radar in the second period.

The Aughnasheelin/Sean O?Heslin?s combination side, Oughteragh Gaels claimed a 1 ? 5 to 0 ? 2 lead in the first thirteen minutes.

In this spell Cathal Egan opened with a Gaels? goal and Wayne McKeon converted two frees while Vincent Mulvey and Anton Arandelovic added a point apiece.

Glencar/Manor?s Adrian Croal and Ronan McGourty responded with a point each.

However Glencar/Manor staged a fight back and turned the tables on Oughteragh Gaels by the nineteenth minute, to claim a one-point lead.

The all important Glencar/Manor revival scores were delivered by Alan Hickey, a goal, Ronan McGourty, two points and Gary Hickey, a point.

But Oughteragh Gaels got back on level terms and regained a 1 ? 6 to 1 ? 5 lead by the interval after Shane Murphy and Anton Arandelovic shot a point each.

Points were exchanged by Oughteragh Gaels? Wayne McKeon and Glencar/Manor?s Anthony McDonald in opening five minutes of the second half.

After that Glencar/Manor?s challenge collapsed and Oughteragh Gaels pulled well clear thanks to a goal and two points from Ronan O?Rourke while Finian Sharpley, Cathal Egan, Wayne McKeon, Liam Ferguson and Anton Arandelovic added a point each.

Club Grounds of the Year

Congratulation to Aughnasheelin on winning the Leitrim County Club Grounds of the year for 2006. In a close run competition the outright winners were chosen after Connacht Officers inspected the short list recommended by the Leitrim County committee. The runners up were Bornacoola and Drumreilly.

All 3 have paid excellent attention to detail in recent years and this has culminated in the excellent quality of the grounds for both players and spectators alike.

Aughnasheelin have been particulary busy with recent major upgrading of the pitch and surrounding area. The awarding of this years title is well justified and congratulations to all concerned and well done on the win.

Hurling in Leitrim ? The way forward
A meeting will take place in the Bush Hotel on Thursday 16/11 at 8pm to discuss the way forward for both Hurling and camogie in Leitrim. All clubs are asked to send a delegate to this meeting even if they don?t field teams at present. Mr. Damien Coleman, Hurling director for Connacht will attend this meeting. Primary and Post Primary Teachers and any personnel from other Counties currently working in Leitrim are asked to attend.

AIB Connacht Club Semi-final

Corofin proved much too good for Leitrim champions Mohill in a one sided Connacht Club Semi-final in Cloone on Sunday.

Mohill made life reasonably difficult for Corofin for most of the first half as it took the Galway side quite some time to get to grips with their Leitrim opponents.

Defences were on top early on with the result after the first quarter Kieran Comer for Corofin and Colm Beirne for Mohill had only swapped a point each.

Mohill took the lead for the first an only time in the showdown when Seamus McCrann shot a point in the seventeenth minute.

A Trevor Burke goal for Corofin in the twenty-eight minute put the Galway men ahead by 1 ? 2 to 0 ? 2.

Kieran Comer added two points to put Corofin further in front by 1 ? 4 to 0 ? 2 at the interval.

When Stephen Conaty shot a spectacular goal nine minutes after the restart it looked like that a Mohill comeback was on the cards.

But Corofin took total command for then on hitting seven unanswered points before final whistle with Gary Sice finding the target twice while David Morris, Emmett Killeen, Aidan Donnellan, Kieran Comer and Thomas Costello added a point each.
