A great secondhalf comeback from Cloone to come within a single point of the champions was not enough to prevent Aughawillan from securing the ladies senior title yet again on Saturday evening. The game was a first for the ladies board in staging their first floodlit final in Cloone where Aughawillan had to work very hard in the second half to retain their title. However they had laid the ground work for their victory in the opening quarter Scóring 1-4 before Cloone began to settle into the game.
With a player of the match performance from midfielder Sinead Brennan, the Cloone defence and in particular Annette Donnelly, Grainne Tiernan and Teresa Mylott all performed well. Brennans partner at midfield, Eileen Donohue worked hard all through the game but their forwards failed to make an impact with only Aoife Kelly and Aisling Brennan causing problems. Aughawillan as expected had very solid performances throughout the team with Eilish Quinn, Mary Fee, Catherine Holohan particularly good in defence. Maeve Quinn and Sarah McLoughlin won their share of ball at midfield and were particularly impressive going forward while Claire Plunkett, Nora McGovern and Sinead Quinn were the pick of the forwards.

Maeve Quinn increased the Aughawillan lead with a fine point from play after five minutes before Niamh McGlade?s shot went narrowly wide across the face of the goals. A Sarah McLoughlin effort then went over the bar following good build up play with Sinead Quinn involved. Cloone slowly began to get to the pace of the game but a number of attacks were easily cut out by Aughawillan with Cloone passing in the final third of the pitch going astray and full back Eilish Quinn?s excellent covering play. After ten minutes Cloone had their first meaningful attack but a shot onÓgoal from Aoife Kelly was well blocked by Quinn for a forty five but the resulting kick was comfortably dealt with by the defence. Nora McGovern, a replacement for Karen McGovern who was unable to start due to injury, hit a fine point from play following a Maeve Quinn wide after twelve minutes. Two minutes later a promising Cloone move was thwarted with a great Mary McKeon interception to set up another Aughawillan attack but Maeve Quinn?s effort went wide. From the kickout Sarah McLoughlin won the ball but was fouled and Quinn pointed the resulting free to leave Aughawillan seven points in front and Cloone yet to score. Cloone responded with two more attacks but again the Aughawillan defence were alert to the danger. Annette Colreavy and Sinead Brennan ended two more attacks with great blocking down and Brennan?s block led to sister Lorraine opening the Scóring for Cloone after twenty two minutes with a point from play. Two minutes later however, Sarah McLoughlin scored the point of the game with a huge effort from forty meters. With Eileen Donohue and Sinead Brennan beginning to hold their own at midfield, Cloone began to push forward again. Donohue was fouled by Maeve Quinn and Sinead Brennan pointed the thirty meter free. Brennan was unlucky a minute later to see her long range effort go narrowly wide. Cloone then had an excellent goal chance with Aisling Brennan and Aoife Kelly involved but Kelly?s final effort went just wide of the far post. The final action of the half involved Senead Brennan again with a great pass to Donohue but her effort was just wide of the target.

Cloone had another great goal chance two minutes later but the massed Aughawillan defence scrambled the ball to safety. Claire Plunkett punished Cloone for these wasted opportunities at the other end following good work from Sinead Quinn. With Brennan and Donohue now dominating the midfield, Sinead Brennan hit over a huge free with ten minutes remaining and a minute later pointed again to leave a single point between the teams. Aughawillan were now under severe pressure and responded very well with points from Plunkett and McLoughlin as they went three points up again. But the Cloone revival was not yet over as they fought back again and Brennan pointed an easy free when Aoife Kelly was fouled. With the fulltime whistle only minutes away, Sinead Brennan crowned her player of the match performance with another great point from play to leave the minimum between the teams for the second time. As the excitement of the final minutes reached its height, Cloone keeper Aisling Mitchell was blocked with a clearance and the loose ball eventually came to Niamh McGlade who hit the all important goal to ensure Aughawillan retained their title. There was little time for any more action except an insurance point for the winners from McGlade with a superb effort over her shoulder.

Big Entry for Scór na mBunscoileanna
ScórThere has been a big increase in the number of schools participating in Scór na mBunscoileanna this year. Entries are up 50% with sixteen schools about to participate. Since Scór na mBunscoileanna started two years ago it was possible to run it off in one night. However this year there will be two nights of competition and the good news is that Coiste Scór Liatroma have decided that the winners on both nights will get medals. Each night will be run independent of the other, there will be no County Final as such, but the winners of each competition on both nights will receive medals.
This year there will be a plaque for presentation to the best school overall. The plaque has been donated by the MacGiolla Family to commemorate the late Cormac MacGiolla who was the man who initiated Scór na mBunscoileanna just two years ago. Since then it has developed countrywide.
There are two new competitions this year: solo music and solo dance and these have also generated great interest. Each school is being asked to have one person with them who would help at stewarding on the night. Each night will start with Tr?th na gCeisteanna at 6.30 promptly. The other events will start with Rince Foirne at 7.00 sharp. The venues and schools taking part are as follows:

[b]Leitrim GAA Supporters launch Innovative Fundraising Drive to Rebuild P?irc Se?n MacDiarmada[/b]
An innovative fundraising initiative was launched today in Carrick-on-Shannon by supporters of Leitrim GAA to raise ?1.5m to complete the redevelopment of P?irc Se?n MacDiarmada.
The fundraising will pay for a 3,000 seat covered stand, four new dressing rooms, shower rooms, training area, meeting rooms, kitchen and canteen and press facilities. The new facilities will replace those provided when the stadium was originally opened in 1964 and are badly needed to bring the stadium up to modern standards.
The new facilities will cost ?3m in total. Preliminary funding of ?1.5m has already been secured from the Department of Arts Sport and Tourism and the GAA. An additional ?1.5m is required and this fundraising drive is aimed at the loyal Leitrim GAA supporters and friends. All donations are tax efficient and this appeal is looking for Leitrim people living all over Ireland and overseas to give a one off donation to provide state of the art GAA facilities for the coming decades.
The fundraising initiative is titled ?Get on the Team? and it gives Leitrim people a chance to be involved in safeguarding the future of Leitrim?s GAA headquarters for many years to come. Donations start from as little as ?580 to ?14,500 for 42% PAYE taxpayers and from ?800 to ?20,000 if you are a 20% taxpayer. The ?14,500 donated by a 40% PAYE taxpayer will actually translate to ?25,000 as the development is approved for tax relief purposes. A ?20,000 donation by a 20% taxpayer will mean a ?25,000 donation.
The generosity of donors will be commemorated by a permanent plaque that will be prominently displayed on the wall at the entrance to Pairc Se?n. There are gold, silver, bronze, green, yellow and white teams which represent the amount donated. (For example, a ?25,000 donation secures your place on the gold team?etc)
Speaking today, Leitrim GAA County Board Chairman Gerry McGovern said: ?This redevelopment will not only provide Leitrim GAA with a superb new Headquarters but it will also greatly reflect the positive and vibrant attitude that exists among the people of Leitrim and considerably enhance the image of Carrick-on-Shannon and the County in general. We are calling on Leitrim people everywhere to get behind this fundraising drive to give us a stadium of which we can all be proud of for years to come.?
Players representing the present and future of Leitrim GAA were in attendance at Pairc Se?n to lend support to the fundraising drive. The senior, U-21 and minor players were in Carrick-on-Shannon as were the captains of the ladies football minor and senior teams. 2006 was a relatively successful one on the pitch for Leitrim, with the senior team reaching the Tommy Murphy Cup final and the ladies winning the Connacht junior final before losing out to Sligo in the All-Ireland final.

CoachingHurling Coaching Session.
Paudi Butler the recently appointed director of hurling, will give a coaching workshop on Thursday evening next in the sports complex Ck ?on ? Shannon, commencing at 6 pm. Paudi will work with a group of young hurlers where coaches can observe and from approx 7.15pm he will work with the coaches themselves and also speak with club administrators . This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in Hurling or camogie to come along, watch and listen to what Paudi has to say. We would welcome any Teacher?s , primary and post primary to come along also.
Development Squads.
Our development squad sessions for this season concluded on Saturday last with an under 14 blitz in Curry, Co. Sligo. The Leitrim squad had a successful day, defeating squads from Sligo and Fermanagh, loosing only to Roscommon in their last game. The team were short players from St. Mary?s, and Sean O? Heslins due to the under 16 final . We in coaching would like to thank all players involved in the squads for this year and wish them well in the future. We would also like to thank team mentors Martin Mc Gowan, Jerome Quinn, Barney Breen, James Holohan and Eamon Mc Gowan for all the work they put into the squads during the year.
Post Primary 2nd year Blitz
Drumshanbo Vocational school won the Michael Mc Guinness shield, when they beat Drumkeerin Vocational school in the final of this blitz day played last week in Drumshanbo. Teams from Mohill and Carrigallen Vocational schools along with a team from the Marion College, Mohill took part in the Blitz. Their were many fine individual performances on the day and all schools can be pleased with their teams. Denise Sorohan, Captain of the Drumshanbo team accepted the Michael Mc Guinness Shield on behalf of her team and her performances in every game suggest that she will be playing Ladies Inter County before long. Well done to all who took part.

St. Mary?s scored a fully deserved win over Tubbercurry in Sunday?s hard fought Connacht Club hurling first round championship game in Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry.
A goal by Stephen McManus for St. Mary?s in the seventeenth minute gave the Carrick-on-Shannon side a victory cushion for the remainder of the exchanges.
Despite the absence of Nicky Rackard All Star, Paul Severs, who got married on Friday, Tubbercurry were always in the hunt but were never able to turn the tables on St. Mary?s.
St. Marys next outing will be on the weekend of November 4/5 when their semi-final opponents will be the winners of the Athleague/Ballyhaunis Connacht Club quarterfinal..

Both our U14 and U15 Football squads were in action over the weekend. The under 14 panel played Fermanagh in a very entertaining challange. Played over 80 min. duration Fermanagh came out on top, however Leitrim after going behind early on closed the gap and performed well after a slow start. The under U15 squad played both Sligo and Roscommon in a blitz in Roscommon and after very close games came out on top in both.

Congratulations to Dromahair ladies who captured the Junior B Champiomship title on Sunday week last with a great display to defeat Sean O?Heslins in Drumshanbo. The Ballinamore club came bouncing back on Saturday last as they defeated neighbours Aughnasheelin in the 9 a Side Under 16 Final.
[b]Connacht Club Championship: [/b]
Our Junior and Senior Club champions bowed out of the Connacht Club Championship at the semi final stage over the past week. Glencar Manor led by a point at the halfway stage of their game against Cill Chomain of Mayo on Sunday week in Drumkeerin but playing against the wind in the second half they could not prevent the Mayo team from progressing. On Saturday last Aughawillan travelled to Kiltoom to take on St Brigids of Roscommon in the senior semi final. Unfortunately in the end they were defeated by three points on a scoreline of 3-7 to 3-4.
[b]Division 3 League: [/b]
Dromahair and Sean O?Heslins meet again on Sunday next when the Division 3 league title will be decided. See fixtures for details.
[b]Division 2 League: [/b]
Wins for Annaduff over Bornacoola and Glencar Manor against Ballinaglera on Sunday last have left both teams facing a crucial league game next Sunday. A win for Glencar Manor will qualify them for the final against St Joseph?s but an Annaduff win will mean a further round of games to be completed with a possible playoff in prospect.

Kiltubrid enjoyed a 5-8 to 1-10 win over Mohill in a playoff game on Sunday morning last. This now qualifies them for a semi final meeting with Cloone with the winners meeting Aughawillan in the final.
[b]Intermediate B Championship: [/b]
St Josephs and Glencar Manor have qualified for the final with the date to be arranged.
[b]Under 16 Championship: [/b]
Three of the four semi finalists have now been confirmed as St Josephs, Kiltubrid, Aughawillan. The fourth place will be taken by the winners of the Glencar Manor and St Marys game to be played next Saturday at 1.00pm in Manorhamilton.
[b]All Ireland Final:[/b]
In the end Sligo proved to be the superior team on the day as Leitrim could not reproduce the form that took them to Croke Park. However this has still been a successful year for the ladies team. The first objective of promotion to Division 2 of the National League in May was achieved by qualifying for the League Final. Despite the one point loss to Clare in the final, the team lifted itself to new heights and achieved their second objective of collecting the Connacht title late in July. The third objective of qualifying for the All Ireland Final was also achieved and great credit is due to all of the players, management and County board officials who left no stone unturned during the year. The experience of playing in the final will undoubtedly give a great advantage to all for next years campaign. Playing in the final is not just about a game as there we so many side issues to be addressed and dealt with. Thanks to all of the players for their excellent representation on behalf of their county all over the weekend. The day was also very special for ten lucky under 12 players who played at half time during the finals, and hopefully some of them will get a chance to represent Leitrim on the national stage again in the future. Thanks to the clubs for their help in the sale of match tickets. A special word of thanks to the thousands of Leitrim supporters who travelled to Croke Park for the game and for their great support before, during and after the game. Despite the heartbreak of the loss, the players will all have special memories of the weekend, but in particular they will remember the fantastic receptionÓgiven to them from the supporters both in the Cusack and Hogan Stand after the game. Speaking to a number of supporters after the game this was also a special moment for them, and they felt nothing but pride in their players that gave them a great journey this year. Thanks to all of our sponsors who helped in no small way towards the financial cost of the weekend. We hope that this is only the start of more rewarding days ahead.
[b]All Ireland Sevens: [/b]
Well done to Dromahair and Aughawillan who represented Leitrim in the Junior and Senior annual sevens competition at Naomh MearnÓg on the day before the All Ireland. Dromahair also played in the under 14 sevens on the same day.
[b]All Star Nominations: [/b]
Unfortunately there was great disappointment on Friday as Leitrim?s achievement in reaching the finals of the three competitions they took part in was not taken into consideration when the All Star Nominations for 2006 were announced. While the task of nominating a final list is always difficult, and accepting that the senior counties will get the majority of nominations, it is usual that teams that reach the final stages of competitions have some representation on the final list, and Leitrim seem to be the only county to lose out. Best of luck to Sligo?s goalkeeper, Katrina Connolly on her third successive nomination and this should be third time lucky for Katrina.

Scór na nÓg
ScórPreparations are now beginning for Scór na nÓg and clubs are being asked to start immediately. As before there will be two semi finals, on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 December, at venues to be arranged.
Scór na nÓg is at a wonderful high level in Leitrim with most clubs taking part. This year the Leitrim Scór committee hopes to see all of the usual clubs putting in the same great effort and hopes also to see other clubs who may not have been there last year take up the effort. It is all a most enjoyable experience and a huge boost to Irish cultural activity in each parish.

Meanwhile schools are engaged in their preparations for Scór na mBunscoileanna which takes place in just a months time on 9 and 10 November. The closing date for entries is 20 October. Remember this year schools can also enter solo dancers and solo musicians.
