St. Mary?s scored a fully deserved win over Tubbercurry in Sunday?s hard fought Connacht Club hurling first round championship game in Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry.

A goal by Stephen McManus for St. Mary?s in the seventeenth minute gave the Carrick-on-Shannon side a victory cushion for the remainder of the exchanges.

Despite the absence of Nicky Rackard All Star, Paul Severs, who got married on Friday, Tubbercurry were always in the hunt but were never able to turn the tables on St. Mary?s.

St. Marys next outing will be on the weekend of November 4/5 when their semi-final opponents will be the winners of the Athleague/Ballyhaunis Connacht Club quarterfinal..

Coaching news update

Development squads.
Both our U14 and U15 Football squads were in action over the weekend. The under 14 panel played Fermanagh in a very entertaining challange. Played over 80 min. duration Fermanagh came out on top, however Leitrim after going behind early on closed the gap and performed well after a slow start. The under U15 squad played both Sligo and Roscommon in a blitz in Roscommon and after very close games came out on top in both.

Congrats to Mohill,Carrigallen and Eslin who all won County titles over the past week.

Congratulations to Dromahair ladies who captured the Junior B Champiomship title on Sunday week last with a great display to defeat Sean O?Heslins in Drumshanbo. The Ballinamore club came bouncing back on Saturday last as they defeated neighbours Aughnasheelin in the 9 a Side Under 16 Final.

[b]Connacht Club Championship: [/b]
Our Junior and Senior Club champions bowed out of the Connacht Club Championship at the semi final stage over the past week. Glencar Manor led by a point at the halfway stage of their game against Cill Chomain of Mayo on Sunday week in Drumkeerin but playing against the wind in the second half they could not prevent the Mayo team from progressing. On Saturday last Aughawillan travelled to Kiltoom to take on St Brigids of Roscommon in the senior semi final. Unfortunately in the end they were defeated by three points on a scoreline of 3-7 to 3-4.

[b]Division 3 League: [/b]
Dromahair and Sean O?Heslins meet again on Sunday next when the Division 3 league title will be decided. See fixtures for details.

[b]Division 2 League: [/b]
Wins for Annaduff over Bornacoola and Glencar Manor against Ballinaglera on Sunday last have left both teams facing a crucial league game next Sunday. A win for Glencar Manor will qualify them for the final against St Joseph?s but an Annaduff win will mean a further round of games to be completed with a possible playoff in prospect.

[b]Division 1 League: [/b]
Kiltubrid enjoyed a 5-8 to 1-10 win over Mohill in a playoff game on Sunday morning last. This now qualifies them for a semi final meeting with Cloone with the winners meeting Aughawillan in the final.

[b]Intermediate B Championship: [/b]
St Josephs and Glencar Manor have qualified for the final with the date to be arranged.

[b]Under 16 Championship: [/b]
Three of the four semi finalists have now been confirmed as St Josephs, Kiltubrid, Aughawillan. The fourth place will be taken by the winners of the Glencar Manor and St Marys game to be played next Saturday at 1.00pm in Manorhamilton.

[b]All Ireland Final:[/b]
In the end Sligo proved to be the superior team on the day as Leitrim could not reproduce the form that took them to Croke Park. However this has still been a successful year for the ladies team. The first objective of promotion to Division 2 of the National League in May was achieved by qualifying for the League Final. Despite the one point loss to Clare in the final, the team lifted itself to new heights and achieved their second objective of collecting the Connacht title late in July. The third objective of qualifying for the All Ireland Final was also achieved and great credit is due to all of the players, management and County board officials who left no stone unturned during the year. The experience of playing in the final will undoubtedly give a great advantage to all for next years campaign. Playing in the final is not just about a game as there we so many side issues to be addressed and dealt with. Thanks to all of the players for their excellent representation on behalf of their county all over the weekend. The day was also very special for ten lucky under 12 players who played at half time during the finals, and hopefully some of them will get a chance to represent Leitrim on the national stage again in the future. Thanks to the clubs for their help in the sale of match tickets. A special word of thanks to the thousands of Leitrim supporters who travelled to Croke Park for the game and for their great support before, during and after the game. Despite the heartbreak of the loss, the players will all have special memories of the weekend, but in particular they will remember the fantastic receptionÓgiven to them from the supporters both in the Cusack and Hogan Stand after the game. Speaking to a number of supporters after the game this was also a special moment for them, and they felt nothing but pride in their players that gave them a great journey this year. Thanks to all of our sponsors who helped in no small way towards the financial cost of the weekend. We hope that this is only the start of more rewarding days ahead.

[b]All Ireland Sevens: [/b]
Well done to Dromahair and Aughawillan who represented Leitrim in the Junior and Senior annual sevens competition at Naomh MearnÓg on the day before the All Ireland. Dromahair also played in the under 14 sevens on the same day.

[b]All Star Nominations: [/b]
Unfortunately there was great disappointment on Friday as Leitrim?s achievement in reaching the finals of the three competitions they took part in was not taken into consideration when the All Star Nominations for 2006 were announced. While the task of nominating a final list is always difficult, and accepting that the senior counties will get the majority of nominations, it is usual that teams that reach the final stages of competitions have some representation on the final list, and Leitrim seem to be the only county to lose out. Best of luck to Sligo?s goalkeeper, Katrina Connolly on her third successive nomination and this should be third time lucky for Katrina.

Scór na nÓg

Preparations are now beginning for Scór na nÓg and clubs are being asked to start immediately. As before there will be two semi finals, on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 December, at venues to be arranged.

Scór na nÓg is at a wonderful high level in Leitrim with most clubs taking part. This year the Leitrim Scór committee hopes to see all of the usual clubs putting in the same great effort and hopes also to see other clubs who may not have been there last year take up the effort. It is all a most enjoyable experience and a huge boost to Irish cultural activity in each parish.

Meanwhile schools are engaged in their preparations for Scór na mBunscoileanna which takes place in just a months time on 9 and 10 November. The closing date for entries is 20 October. Remember this year schools can also enter solo dancers and solo musicians.

Carrigallen emerged with a deserved two point?s winning margin in Sunday?s hard fought and highly entertaining Leitrim intermediate final replay in Cloone.

St. Mary?s claimed their eight Leitrim senior hurling title in a row in Ballinamore on Saturday after withstanding a determined second half Glencar/Manor fight back that cut the Carrick-on-Shannon side?s ten point lead to just two points with nine minutes to go.

After that St. Mary?s regained their composure, led by man-of-the-match Clement Cunniffe, who fired over two points in closing stages that helped take his side well clear of Glencar/Manor at the end.

Glencar/Manor trailed by 1 ? 3 to 2 ? 9 at the interval but the introduction of halftime sub Gary Hickey inspired the north Leitrim side when he hammered home goals from a free and a penalty as well as converting four frees on the trot.

[b]GAA National Coaching Conference.[/b]
The 4th annual GAA coaching conference will this year be hosted in Croke park from Friday, November 24th to Sunday November 26th. This year a new dimension has been added and for the first time the conference will address key medical issues specific to player welfare.

The conference will be officially opened on Friday evening , followed by a function to honour our top coaches. On Saturday the conference programme will combine a cross sectional theme targeting coaches, administrators and referees as part of the GAA games development CARE foundation. This year the conference will also include a full GAA suppliers exhibition village. Cost this year will be 65 Euro per delegate.

[b]First year Post Primary blitz ? Brady cup Blitz[/b]
Our first year Post Primary blitz took place in Manorhamilton on Tuesday September 26th. Seven Schools took part and despite the weather , a wonderfull days football was served up. The final was contested between Carrick Community School and St. Clares Manorhamilton with St. Clares winning by a point at the final whistle. Well done to all who took part.

[b]Under 10 Blitz.[/b]
The next series of under 10 blitz will take place on Saturday 14/10/2006.
Games will commence at 10.30 and will be conditioned to allow only one solo and one hop after which the ball must be played away.

Big Day Preview

Big Day Preview?.

This Sunday is the big day for four clubs in Leitrim as Drumreilly and Carrigallen compete for the GWP Intermediate Cup and in the Senior game it?s the battle royal between Mohill and St. Mary?s for the Masonite Senior Ellis Cup.

Three of the teams have had 2 weeks to prepare since their semi-finals with St. Mary?s having only one week as they had to overcome Allen Gaels in the semi replay last weekend.

The games are scheduled for Cloone with the Intermediate throw-in at 2:30pm and the Senior at 4:15pm. Eamon O?Grady is the referee for the first game while Francis Flynn has beenÓgiven the honours for the 2006 Senior final.

Large Crowds are expected in Cloone so patrons are advised to arrive early as parking spaces are limited in the vicinity of the grounds.

[b]GWP Intermediate Final ? Drumreilly v Carrigallen ? 2:30pm ? Cloone:[/b]

Two neighbouring clubs will battle it out for the title, the cup and the right to play Senior championship in 2007. This will be a very interesting game as both teams have performed well in the league this year with Carrigallen, who play division 2, the only team in the county not to have lost a league game.

Experience will count in this bout and with that Drumreilly have the power house of county players John McKeon and Declan Maxwell, Carrigallen have county star Noel Lyons and minor player of the year in 05 – Gary Reynolds. Other notable players for Drumreilly are Francis and James Holohan while Carrigallen?s Noel Nash in defence and Benny O?Rourke in the forwards have a bit of cut about them.

[b]Masonite Senior Championship Final ? Mohill v St. Mary?s ? 4:15pm ? Cloone:[/b]

Two town based teams and one man the main link between the two such is the story of this Senior final. Mohill have been waiting 32 years to win a Senior final and in 2006 they have played very exciting fast football en-route to Cloone. St. Mary?s likewise have been a force to be reckoned with and with ex-Mohill Manager Matt Gaffey they have turned in some very impressive performances this year. From the start of the 06 season both teams set out their stalls with Mohill only conceding 3 games in the league and St. Mary?s two.

On to the championship and Mohill had a very tough group stage against Melvin Gaels and Kiltubrid, while St. Mary?s had to contend with Sean O?Heslins and Gortletteragh. Both teams won convincingly in the Quarterfinals with Mohill beating Sean O?Heslins and St. Mary?s disposing of Melvin Gaels. The Semi?s saw Mohill take the win with the last kick of the ball against last years finalists Bornacoola. St. Mary?s had to have a second go at it to get past Allen Gaels.

Mohill have the experience of no less than 5 county players while St. Mary?s have 4. But it?s not just about county players, both teams have an excellent bench to call on and each position on the field is justified.

Ground conditions may play a part, the weather this week is not conducive to fast football and Cloone is getting a severe soaking in the days leading to the game. Who can deal with the conditions? who can deal with the hype of a big game? who wants it the most? The answer to these questions will determine the result.

New County Crest – we need your help !

We are in a time of major change in Leitrim with our on field activites advancing and our infrastructural developments also progressing. In line with this change we are looking to introduce a new County GAA crest for the 2007 season and we want your help !

Up to now the county council crest has been used by Coiste Chontae Liatroma and we would like to have our own unique registered crest in line with most other counties.

In order to develop a crest that portrays Leitrim in a unique way we would like to hear from anyone who has suggestions as to what should be incorporated onto the crest or any other suggestions as to design or even a motto for the crest.

Some counties have used historical features that are associated with the county such as Kerry and the Round Tower in Ballyduff or the Rock of Cashel in Tipperary. Others have used more abstract artistic designs.

Development Squads

[b]Development Squads[/b]
Mixed fortunes for our development squads at the weekend.

Our under 14 Hurlers were beaten in both their games at a blitz in Padraig pearses GAA grounds, Roscommon on Saturday last. The manner in which we were beaten by both Roscommon and Westmeath was most dissapointing and suggests that we must review our complete hurling structure at underage in the County.

Our under 15 footballers faired much better in Castlebar, also on Saturday last, when they beat selections from Donegal and Sligo but lost out by a point to a very strong Galway selection. Next outing for this squad is on Saturday 14/10/07 when they play in a blitz in Roscommon.

On Saturday next, the concluding under 10 blitz will be held in Annaduff and St.Marys GAA grounds.

A number of initiatives are being introduced to help promote the use of the Irish language among the GAA clubs of the County. Clubs are being asked to ensure that more Irish is used in a number of different situations such as:

?Name of Pitch should be in Irish
?Directional Signs to Pitch, Plans to have Irish or bilingual signs to all pitches
?Trophies and Medals ? Inscribe in Irish only
?Jerseys, tee-shirts ? Club name in Irish
?Kit Bags ? Club name as Gaeilge or Irish on one side
?scoreboards – name of club in Irish
?Flags, if name of club is on flag ? Irish
?Lotto Tickets ? Some Irish on them, eg: Club name etc
?Match Programmes: names in Irish and English
?Web Sites: Some Irish on club websites
?Club Notes in paper: Some Irish
?Scór programmes: Names etc in Irish

These and a number of other suggestions for the use of Irish are being circulated to clubs. There has been a great improvement in the use of Irish on shopfronts, estate names and in other ways. A number of Irish classes and Comhr? groups are about to start for the winter also.
