Leitrim Ladies Notes

Junior A Champions:
Congratulations to Glencar Manor who lifted the Junior A Championship cup on Sunday evening in Drumshanbo following a 4-9 to 3-6 win over Ballinaglera. It was heartbreak for Ballinaglera once again with defeat in their third successive Championship game. Leading by a single point at the break, Glencar Manor were coming under serious pressure in the second half from a determined ?Glera team. However a serious injury to midfielder Ailish Curnyn turned things once again in Manors favour and they finished strongly to claim the title. Earlier in the day Ailish had captained Cavan to a great win in the TG4 Ulster Junior Championship Final against Fermanagh. Everyone wishes Ailish well in her recovery from injury and hopefully she will be available to lead Cavan in three weeks time against Longford.

Intermediate Championship:
A great second half performance and three goals from Aine Tighe saw Kiltubrid advance past Mohill and qualify for the Intermediate Championship final against Cloone on 27th August. In the final round of games played Meanwhile inÓgroup A Annaduff came from a point behind at half time to defeat Bornacoola, while Aughawillan had a narrow win over Cloone who have already qualified for the final in this group.

Under 12 Championship:
It was a memorable week for Glencar Manor who also lifted the under 12 Championship with a 3.12 to 0.8 win over St Josephs. With many excellent young players showcasing their talents for both teams, the names of Ailbhe Clancy from Glencar Manor and Niamh McKiernan from St Josephs are players to remember for the future.

TG4 All Ireland Championship:
All eyes were on TG4 on Sunday evening for the draw for the All Ireland quarter finals. With a strong contingent of eight teams left in the Junior Championship, Leitrim were reasonably happy with a draw against beaten Munster finalists Limerick. Ulster champions Cavan will face a local derby game against Longford, while Sligo will play Leinster champions Wexford. In the remaining game Munster champions Clare will play Fermamagh and this will be a double header with the Leitrim game at a neutral venue on Sunday week. The remaining quarter finals will be played the following week.

Leitrim Ladies 9 a Side Junior League Final

Sean O Heslins 1.06 Fenagh 0.04

Sean O?Heslins regained the 9 a side Junior title they previously won in 2004 as they defeated an understrength Fenagh team in Aughavas on Saturday week last. They were first to score with a Carmel McCartin point from play after good work from Kirby Gilgunn. Gilgunn had a chance two minutes later to increase the lead but her effort went wide. Caroline McGroyy increased the lead after five minutes as O Heslins looked to build up a halftine lead playing with a strong wind. After seven minutes McCartin hit a good goal to leave Fenagh with a lot of work to do. They continued to pressurise Fenagh and Marie McGovern was called on to make two good saves. Captain Deborah Gilheaney scored a fine point to increase the lead but two wides and two goal efforts spurned gave some confidence to Fenagh. Cathy Reynolds opened Fenagh?s account with a good point from play with five minutes remaining in the half following a rare attack from the Fenagh girls. It was all Sean O Heslins in the final minutes of the half but they hit two more wides, however Fenagh had one good goal chance but Carol O?Connor saved well from Geraldine Wynne as Sean O Heslins led by 1.03 to 0.01 at half time.
With the aid of the wind in the second half Fenagh began with confidence and Clare Armstrong scored a point from play. O?Connor then made a good save in the O?Heslins goals to prevent a Fenagh goal from Armstrong. Deborah Gilheaney had a chance to reassert O?Heslins lead but hit wide. She made amends three minutes later with a fine pointed free. McGovern was called on again to make a save from McCartin while Fenagh responded with another attack and a point from Avril Goldrick. Fenagh again attacked but a great interceptoion from Maeve Murphy prevented another Fenagh goal effort. Fenagh continued to press forward and were rewarded with a fine point by Geraldine Wynne that hit the top of the crossbar. Sensing that Fenagh were beginning to get on top, O?Heslins responded to the pressure and dominated the final five minutes. Gilheaney pointed a free after she was fouled. Three wides followed for the O?Heslins girls before Gilheaney hit her fifth point in the last minute to ensure the title was going to Ballinamore.

Ladies Under 12 Championship Final

Glencar Manor 3.12 St Josephs 0.08

Glencar Manor ended St Josephs hopes of winning the under 12 championship three years in a row as they pulled away in the second half for an emphatic victory on Wednesday evening last in Ballinaglera. Following Manor?s first ever under age title in the Under 16 championship last year, this title confirms impressive work being undertaken by the North Leitrim club. Apart from the result of the game, the footballing ability and skill level on display from both teams was of the highest quality and made for a great evening?s entertainment for the large crowd of spectators.

The game was barely a minute old when Ailbhe Clancy hit a sweet point for Manor from the outside of her boot. Emma O?Hagan followed up a minute later with another point before St Josephs first attack from Niamh McKiernan but her shot was saved by Sarah Keaney. Five minutes later Clancy scored the first of her three goals after a short free was well worked with Emma O?Hagan and she placed it well out of the keepers reach with a fine finish. St Josephs began to settle into the game and the impressive McKiernan fired over a good point to open their account. Anita Connefry reacted well as Clancy moved forward again for Manor and with the resulting clearance McKiernan hit another fine point for St Josephs followed by a free to leave just two points between the teams. Clancy found space again for Manor ant hit another point and was unlucky two minutes later with a snap shot that went narrowly wide. In the remaining ten minutes St Josephs again dominated with two points from McKiernan, followed by a great effort from Orla Williams to level the game. Connefry made a great catch just over the bar from an Elaine Connolly effort to prevent a point. A brilliant pass from Clancy split the St Joseph?s defence and Siadbh Clancy pointed comfortably to give Manor the lead. St Josephs replied with another great point from play before player of the match Clancy took the score of the game with a brilliantly measured goal to give the North Leitrim team a three point lead at the break.

Manor started the second half as they finished the first with a long range effort from midfielder Elaine Connolly. Sub Niamh Feehily got in on the act when she increased the Manor lead but McKiernan responded immediately for St Josephs. Following a period of great defending by both teams Manor were next to score with another O?Hagan point. Clancy then stepped up to take a difficult free from the right but picked her spot in the top left hand corner for her hat trick and from then on the result of the game was never in doubt. O Hagan pointed a 20m free but St Josephs continued to work hard to reduce the arrears and were unlucky with two wides. Elaine Connolly scored her second point from a free that was deflected over by no 1 in the St Josephs goals. Three unanswered points from Connolly, Niamh Phelan and Connolly again from a free ensured a first Under 12 championship title for Glencar Manor and a proud moment for captain Aoife Keaney who accepted the cup from ChairpersonÓgeraldine Creamer.

Leitrim Ladies Notes:

TG4 Connacht Championship Final:
After seven long years and contesting six finals Leitrim finally got back on top again when Ann Marie Cox lifted the Flanagan Oil Cup on behalf of her very proud teammates at 3.20pm on Sunday afternoon in McHale Park, Castlebar. To all outside the camp, no one could see past a Sligo win ? the form book could only have Sligo odds on to win. In May Leitrim played Sligo in the second round of the Championship and while Leitrim played well for 20 minutes, Sligo again dominated and ran out comfortable winners. But within the camp there was a quiet confidence and determination. A good win in the semi final against Galway four weeks ago helped repair the damage. The heart breaking National league defeat to Clare and the hurt of the past years could all be erased in 60 minutes but it would take all of the courage and determination that the girls could summon and how they did. Playing into a very difficult wind in the first half, Leitrim struck early but it was obvious that Sligo were not going to relinquish their title easily. Four points behind at the break was acceptable with the benefit of the wind in the secondhalf and the mood at half time was good. Things disimproved as Sligo went into a commanding six point lead as the half progressed. Then Leitrim found the courage to dig deeper and chip away at the Sligo lead. As the countdown clock ticked closer to 0.00 a goal would have to come Leitrim?s way to make that final push. A penalty decided it. Captain Ann Marie Cox stepped up and shouldered the responsibility with a brilliant effort. The sides were level and all to play for. Sligo went ahead again but Leitrim responded. Only minutes left and up stepped Sinead Quinn with a wonderful effort to put Leitrim ahead. Over a minute to go and Sligo had one more attack ? then a Scórable free was awarded. They decided to go for broke and looked for a goal for the win. The discipline and effort put into defending the goal was incredible and forced the Sligo attack into going for the draw but the pressure forced an eventual shot wide. Ten seconds on the clock and the subs were making their way down the steps towards the field ? the fulltime hooter went but no one heard it such was the noise of celebration. Management were still shouting instructions to the defence when they realised it was all over as the players fell to their knees in celebration. The tears flowed as they had for the past number of years but this time in celebration. A great result for a wonderful bunch of players who gave everything they had to secure the win. A special word of congratulations to the eleven players who did not get a chance to play on Sunday and who put in the same huge effort all year ? there would be no trophy without them. With a great reception in Cox?s of Dromod the team moved on to Carrick where the game was shown in Paddy?s Bar ? the celebrations lasted long into the night of a day to remember.

Player of the Match:
There was a double celebration for Leitrim as the peerless Maeve Quinn was voted Player of the match. In a panel of many heroes, Maeve?s workrate all day epitomised the efforts of her team mates and a worthy winner of the award.

Supporters:A special word of thanks to all of the supporters who came to support Leitrim on Sunday. Their very vocal support in the final quarter of the game was the sixteenth player for the Leitrim team and undoubtedly lifted the team over the winning line. More of the same in three weeks time would be very much appreciated. Thanks also to all the good luck messages and messages of congratulations sent to the team.

All Ireland Quarter Finals:
The draw for the All Ireland quarter finals will take place live on TG4 at 5.00pm on Sunday from the Galway races. The winners from each province will play the losing quarter finalists from another province. Should Leitrim progress to the semi final, they are due to play the Ulster Champions if they are also successful in their quarter final match or whoever defeats them if they lose. With the Clare defeating Limerick in the Munster final on Sunday last, Leitrims potential opponents are Limerick, Longford or Wexford from Leinster or Cavan or Fermanagh from Ulster. Both Leinster and Ulster Finals are on next Sunday. The quarter finals will take place in three weeks on Sunday 20th August and the semi final on Saturday 9th September. Anyone interested in providing sponsorship towards the expenses of the quarter final game should contact Geraldine Cremer at 086 3290256.

Finance & Sponsorship:
All entries are currently being checked for a winner of the ?500 prize in the Guess the score competition. Thanks to all of the players and clubs for selling the lines and of course to everyone that supported the draw. Thanks to George Manek for organising the sponsorship of a set of polo shirts for the Leitrim team for Sunday last. Thanks also to the mens county board for their sponsorship of a set of bags for the players.
